Back in April, we got the disappointing news that Warner Bros. had decided not to move forward with Ava DuVernay's New Gods movie. At the time, the trades indicated that the studio removed the project from the slate because there was "no natural space in the upcoming DC lineup," but we now have a little more to go on.

An interview snippet with DuVernay has been shared online, and while it's only a few seconds of the conversation, the filmmaker certainly appears to confirm that WB cancelled the film because it would have been too closely linked to Zack Snyder's Justice League. She doesn't mention "The Snyder Cut" by name, but it seems pretty obvious which movie she's talking about!

Find out what DuVernay had to say in the video clip below.

Many fans assumed Warner Bros. wanting to distance themselves from the "SnyderVerse" following the release of ZSJL must have had something to do with the studio shutting down the New Gods adaptation, so this probably won't come as much of a surprise. Even if DuVernay and co-writer Tom King had found a way to set their film apart from Snyder's vision, the mythology was probably too entrenched in the lore established in Justice League for WB's liking.

Maybe DuVernay will get the chance to revisit the project at some point, but for now, New Gods takes its place on the "what might have been" shelf.

I feel like w knew this. I remember them saying they wanted to put some breathing room between the two projects.

So they cancelled it because of the Snyder Cut but that also isn’t getting a sequel so it’s not like the New Gods are not going to show up in the movies anytime soon.

I get the feeling that WB is looking at Eternals (another cosmic Jack Kirby creation) and see how it performs and maybe they can revive the project. However, that movie is getting a mixed reception so reviving New Gods seems unlikely. At least Ava has another DC project with Naomi even though that doesn’t particularly peak my interest.

@AmazingFILMporg - I'm with you. She can do amazing biopics and I'd let her do any one she wanted, but I'm not exactly sure she's right for this kind of project.

Ah so we lost another opportunity to explore a portion of the DC universe lore in exchange for a diarrhetic version of Zaddy's old vision of basterized characters?

Honestly if it wasn’t that reason it was gonna be another.Definitely didn’t ever feel confident that was getting made.Honestly DC throws every hero/villain in some kind of movie development & I’d say a third of them ever see the light of day. This was definitely one I was hoping for & if in fact this is why we didn’t get it then pretty dumb decision.Kind of conflicts with them doing everything possible to separate themselves from the “Snyderverse” tho

I feel like the New Hods is too expansive for one movie. Barda and Scott would be the leads, but there's so much back story to them that's actually important, one film couldn't contain it.

@Battabing - I agree I’d love a HBO max show to flush it out.As long Berlanti & whoever else writes Titans stays far away from it.Honestly the storylines & creative choices that show has made infuriates me.I hate watched the last season with scarecrow, red hood & worst Batman casting since George Clooney no offense to Lain Glenn great actor just horribly miscast. And last not forget one legged babs Gordon hopping around.Just an absolute abortion of a show…. Sorry for the rant but yeah,New Gods tv show sounds good to me

I cannot even process how they managed to make screw this up all over a movie they had get pressured (for almost 3 years) into making

@OmegaDaGrodd - I can. And the answer is simple: it's WB

Yeah, WB did not want the Snyder Cut. It was mandated bt AT&T for HBO Max.

bkmeijer2 - 10/30/2021, 11:25 AM
But why? It's not like 1) the Snydercut was a good or will get a sequel, or 2) they're rebooting the DCEU (or whatever it's called) anyway right

@ElricReturns - that's probably it. It's either some lame excuse or "creative differences"

1) This doesn't make any sense, considering they aren't moving forward with Snyder and his thing (or are they? lel).

2) I absolutely f*cking love Tom King's Mister Miracle and i have absolutely 0 faith in Tom King.

The guy ain't versatile at all and his shit works under very specific conditions.
Conditions that don't match Kirby's 4th Wall magic, regardless of that 12 issue maxi series by King being a small jewel or not.

Nah chief, i don't think i'll shed a tear over this loss.

@Doomsday8888 - I mean just because he's a good comic book writer doesn't mean he would be a good screenwriter.

@BobGarlen
Exactly, that too, i mean...it sure helps (being a good writer), but yeah...can't take that for granted.

But i'm at a point where i don't even think King is a good writer but that he mostly got lucky and struck the right chords with me... here and there.

Or i simply got tired of his PTSD-shit filled comics, cause after a certain point...enough is enough.
