In many ways, it feels like The New Gods is one of those DC movies we heard was coming from Warner Bros. in the trades which is never going to materialise. If so, it would join projects like Joker Vs. Harley Quinn, Nightwing, and Batgirl, but the key different is that filmmaker Ava DuVernay is attached to direct a screenplay she's written alongside comic book writer Tom King.
Despite that, we still don't have a release date, and when actor Ray Porter was recently asked if he's been asked to play Darkseid in The New Gods (he'll star as the iconic villain in Zack Snyder's Justice League), he admitted that, "No, I have not."
"I know a lot of people on Twitter have been making noise about it and I’m really grateful, and I love that, and obviously I’d love to hear from Ava about New Gods, but I also respect that Ava’s got a vision for this project. And if I’m not a part of that vision, that’s just the way it is, and that’s okay. My hope is that it’s something the fans are going to love as well. But I haven’t heard from Ava yet."
Despite the fact Warner Bros. is now planning to release the "Snyder Cut" on HBO Max next year, it appears as if the studio is still looking to move on from the filmmaker's vision for this shared world, so there's no reason to suspect that DuVernay's movie will treat the events of Justice League as canon.
With that in mind, there's a strong chance that her Darkseid will be played by someone else, a move which wouldn't be overly surprising considering the fact an A-Lister playing him does make sense.
What do you guys think?
