SPOILER WARNING: It's probably best you check out the first episode of No Ordinary Family before reading this review as I do reveal a few plot points! However, as I don't go into a huge amount of detail, the review won't completely spoil it for you!

With Stephanie’s career as a research scientist taking off, and their teenage children growing up faster than Jim would care for, the family patriarch seems to be less and less relevant at home. Making matters worse is a violent armed robber at large in the city and Jim’s job as a police sketch artist has thus far been unsuccessful in helping to catch the criminal. In a last ditch effort to bring his family together and fill the void in his life, Jim organizes a trip to South America where his wife Stephanie is researching a strange plant she has recently discovered. A sightseeing plane ride during a freak storm ends in disaster when the plane crashes in to the Amazon river. Miraculously, the Powell family survives and returns home, but as time goes by they one by one begin to discover that something amazing and mysterious is happening to them. What’s more, they may not be the only ones...

I had my doubts about No Ordinary Family when I first saw the trailer for it. I mean, it looked good and all but I just wasn't sure whether it would be my sort of show. How wrong I was, because I liked it from the first few seconds! In fact, this is one of the best pilot episodes of a series that I've ever seen. From my own experience, I find that they're normally a little rough around the edges and often feel like I need to watch subsequent episodes before deciding whether I'll stick with it. Not here though. The whole episode had a very cinematic feel about it and was brilliantly directed. There's no long and drawn out origins story here - they're involved in a plane accident on holiday and each family member then spends the episode discovering their powers and testing them out with some great results. (but more on that later)

One of the most interesting things about the show was the characters of Jim and Stephanie Powell. After seeing Michael Chiklis play a strong character like Vic Mackey in The Shield and Julie Benz as downtrodden Rita in Dexter, the role reversal here was extremely interesting as Benz plays the head of the household and main breadwinner who spends most of her time at work (as a research scientist) while Chiklis plays a police sketch artist who dreams of seeing his family cone together. They both really nail their respective roles, are equally impressive and have great chemistry together...they couldn't have found two better actors to lead this series. Kay Panabaker as Daphne Powell and Jimmy Bennett as JJ Powell are two young actors who I'm not in the least bit familiar with, but what a treat that the writers of this show decided to make them genuinely interesting rather than your typical whiney teens. It's a pity that neither of them are given a little more time in the episode, especially when it comes to discovering and testing their powers, but I have faith that we'll soon pick up with their stories next week and as the show progresses.

Once Jim and his wife discover their powers, we're treated to some great scenes and the CGI is particularly impressive especially for a TV show. After discovering that he can catch bullets and is near invincible (although the scene where he discovers he's not is a very nice twist) he asks his best friend George St. Cloud, a show stealing performance by 40 Year Old Virgin star Romany Malco, to shoot him and sees if he can fly by jumping off a building...both of which lead equally hilarious results. On the other hand, Stephanie takes the slightly more logical route and decides to test just how fast she can run (yes, she's like a female Flash) with the help of her lab assistant. The scene where she discovers her powers is very cool. Daphne meanwhile finds out that she has psychic powers in an interesting enough little subplot and seeing her brother, who faces being put in remedial class because of learning difficulties, discover that his newfound power is a Reed Richards like intelligence was an awesome moment even if I did see it coming.

If I had one problem with this episode, it was the fact that they all seemed a little too accepting about the powers they'd just gained and the fact that and then share their story with a marriage counsellor is a little hard to believe...it'll be interesting to see what they do with that or whether it was just a device to help move things along in this pilot episode. However, this is hardly a big deal and the episode we ended up with, is a lot better than one where the origins/discovery was dragged out for an entire 42 minutes. That's really the only fault I can fin with No Ordinary Family at this point. A fight scene near the end of the episode that featured Chiklis taking on a teleporting bad guy was both fantastically filmed (seriously, it was better than what they did with Nightcrawler in X-Men 2!) and also very intriguing as was the last few minutes. I'm not sure how many episodes they have planned for this season, but I hope it's the full 22, as there is a lot of potential here for some amazing stories.

This is a show most definitely worth checking out. Full of references to comic book fans and fun enough to appeal to those who aren't, it so far has all the right makings of a great TV show. Time will tell if they can keep up this momentum but right now, I have no doubt that No Ordinary Family is something you all should check out!

CRAP??!??!?! TEA come one it was a pretty darn good show. I totally agree with Josh that it was a great pilot and the time went by so fast. Was upset that the episode was over. That fight scene at the end was awesome to see and hope there are more moments like that. Kudos to the review Josh.

On a serious note, I completely disagree but do get where you're coming from. It was riddled with cliches but I enjoyed it nonetheless! :) I just thought that the whole thing was great fun and actually liked the family. It would be even better if it was just the dad and his friend in that garage though...hopefully he'll keep that secret from his wife and it'll be a situation that's around for a while!

lokisilvertongue2214/DeathWalker: Cheers guys - it really was a great pilot and a fantastic start to a new show! That final fight scene was one of the best I've seen (they could teach Smallville more than a few things that's for sure!) and I have a feeling that it'll just keep on getting better from here! Considering that my longtime favourite shows like Dexter and Supernatural had such poor season openers, No Ordinary Family was a pleasant surprise!

While I enjoyed the show, I think your review is a little bit too positive. Chiklis and Benz are good actors and can carry the show, but the key is the writing. If they continue to stick to cliches, the show won't last long.

The key will be (a) how they deal with having powers in an ordinary world, and (b) how well they implement the "great conspiricy" that is obviously going to provide super-powered foes. It if turns into a "freak of the week" show, it won't last.

I have to admit that the special effects, especially of Super Speed, were nicely done. I also appreciate a show where a family tries to stay together -- not enough of that on TV.

Julie Benz is THE WORST actress I have ever seen. I was SO THANKFUL when they killed her off on Dexter. I have no idea how she gets work. I would watch, but not if she is on it.

It was okay but a few things really annoyed me.

1- When the detective got shot at in the precinct, why did he catch the bullet in the first place? Did he have a habit of doing that before he got powers? It would have been more believable if he took the bullet square on.

2- Why would someone even consider shooting his friend? I mean he actually had the gun in hand. Wouldn't you have a long talk with someone who ask you to shoot him so he can prove to you that he can catch bullets? Or at least shoot yourself as a tester before showing anyone else.

3- If someone is going to take a test flight try something a little closer to the ground. Why would they start a top of a building 10 stories high (or so) right off the bat.

4- Lastly, why we're they considering keeping their powers hidden from each other? Other people I understand, but they live in the same house.

Any interest I had in this before, is gone.

I didn't watch it, but I think that it's ABC trying their hand at super heroes before using Marvel properties.

Josh, I agree with you that this was one of the best pilots I've seen in a long time, even if it was cliche. IMO it should have been a 2 hour pilot! A lot of the commenters have valid points; the catching of the bullet thing, jumping from 10 stories, etc, but it was still a fun episode for me.

Although it was cool, I still think the Nightcrawler scene in X2 was better, but I was impressed with it from a network TV perspective. Who knows, maybe whatever was in that Brazilian water that gave them their powers somehow increased the very abilities they were lacking in was done on purpose. But I'm afraid of a "Heroes"-like company conspiracy since others obviously have powers as well. I'm just sayin!!

Lol, thanks for your comments everyone! I definitely get where you're coming from in terms of the cliches but it was fun enough, and well acted enough, that they just didnt bother me to be honest. It's a really well made show and I very much look forward to the next episode! :) However, a lot will rest on the stories and direction they now take it in - that will ultimately dictate whether it ends up a failure or success. Another Heroes where it goes downhill season after season is not something we need.

I wonder why they don't make a real customed character series. A family, why not make a fantastic four series?
A Daredevil series would do fine also.
Sara Connors worked out ok so why not make a Teen Titans series, it would even work without Robin.
I miss the Birds of Prey series they were ok even if the Huntress did not wear a mask.

They are just afraid the characters will not connect with general public.

Thought I had my tape set for this but I didn't. Yeah, I said tape. Can't afford a DVD recorder or DVR, so it's still good ole VHS for me.

Fortunately, this episode is up on abc.com, so I definitely plan to check this out tonight. I'll be back afterwards to discuss.

Thanks to JoshW for posting an interesting review of the show that has only heightened my interest to see it for myself.

I enjoyed the show. In this type of show you kinda have to go at it with and open mind. I don't think that they'er trying to stay so serious. And sometime cliches can be fun. There are a few things that I did not like at all. Like the catching bullets thing. He's not fast. He's strong. But some of you have already mentioned that.
