Quickly, off the top of your head, name three movies that had at least two female characters that talk to each other at some point about something other than a man. There is a high probability this probably came easy to you because movies like Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, The Conjuring, The Heat, Frozen, Hunger Games 2, among many others, all passed the criteria. This year, the combined intake of movies that passed the Bechdel test, the criteria being the three I just listed, earned more at the box office than the combined intake of those movies that failed. Among the failures you can count Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and Pacific Rim.
Considering that women are a HUGE portion of the audience that go to see movies, and a demographic which for most of film history have been poorly represented, this news seems to indicate that Hollywood is finally getting around to changing that. However, while women may be getting a bigger spotlight in the movies, this doesn't seem to be the case behind the camera. All of these films were directed by men, with the exception being Frozen which was co-directed by Jennifer Lee. I suppose this new age nonsense of women having representation in Hollywood must be taken with one babystep at a time.
The chart below is taken courtesy from Vocativ.com. Among the more debatable choices were The Hobbit because it actually added a female character. And it was mentioned post release, that the love triangle was added in reshoots because of "studio request." Meanwhile Gravity only has two characters in it, and thus is impossible to pass. Pacific Rim failed, but never actually fell in love with or became the reward for Charlie Hunnam's character. Nevertheless, the results have shown an uplifting and am excited to see how the years go by seeing more and more feminism in our entertainment.
