EDITORIAL: Why Making THE INHUMANS The MCU Equivalent Of Mutants Is A Good Idea

I give my thoughts on the idea that the Inhumans are going to be used as Marvel Studio's movie version of mutants. Hit the jump to check it out...

Everybody knows the Inhumans as the freak experiments created by the Kree. Marvel's Inhumanity event may be presenting us with the method through which they will introduce the idea of "mutants" to the MCU. To some, this is a great idea and people admire the initiative Marvel are taking to jump over the mutant hurdle. Others see it as a lazy move and also a bit of a cop out as if you can't have mutants, you shouldn't come up with a replacement. There is also the group that sees Inhumanity as a means of appeasing the idea of not sticking to source material. Well, those people are wrong because every Marvel hero has descended from humans that interbred with the Eternals (the race created by the Celestials).

So, you see, Marvel would just be rehashing something that has already been the basis of their superheroes for a good few years now. That's why I'm pretty comfortable with the idea of making it a matter of modern humans having Inhuman genes lying dormant in their bodies, which are later activated in the same way as a mutants, or in the case of the Inhumanity event, Terrigen Mists being released across the world. On top of that, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has already presented the idea of someone having powers spontaneously. An explanation was never given for how Scorch gained his power and Raina constantly told him he had a "gift". As well as that, Terrigens were mentioned in an earlier episode when the team recovered that piece of technology in "084", during his analysis of the object, Fitz used the term "terrigens". Why is all of this releveant though? Well, obviously, it's due to the inclusion of Quicksilver an Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

They're the reason Marvel need to tackle this issue in the first place. The idea makes sense as Terrigen Mists have been used in the comics to allow Quicksilver to regain his mutant abilities.

In conclusion, Marvel are being smart in using something that they have had all their heroes rooted to since Neill Gaiman's run on the Eternals (which I highly recommend). They're merely replacing the interbreeding of a race created by aliens with humans, to a race of humans with dormant Inhuman DNA. So, no need to complain about source material neglection.

I am okay with the MCU replacing mutants with inhumans. My problem is with them doing this in the comics. Whats the point of having the Inhumans become the "new mutants" in the comics when they already have the regular mutants? I mean, the only reason they're doing this is to validate the MCU.

"a lazy move and also a bit of a cop out as if you can't have mutants, you shouldn't come up with a replacement."my sentiments!!
Marvel Disney made millions if not billions with avengers and Ironman. They could have bought back the rights to all marvel properties but instead they get Starwars >:( So now we as fans are left stuck with a half baked Marvel Cinematic univers with more plot holes than Gouda chees. Turning quicksilver and scarlet witch in Inhumans is a cheap ass way to explain theyr powers and is NOT i repeat NOT staying true to the source material!! But nice editorial ;)

Yep..sounds like a plan...Im down with Inhumans anyway, and always felt like they were cooler then mutants...just underplayed.

And as far as the comics go and marvel downplaying non-MCU materials..tough cookies. If i were Marvel i would do EXACTLY that to Fox studios. I would kill off every single mutant, including wolverine, and leave them dormant for 10 years or so. They can afford it..

m0th3r - 11/30/2013, 1:04 PM
@KingMarvel I wish marvel had bought them back, but BOTH Fox and Sony say no way. Sony has gone as far as saying it will NEVER lose the rights...ever..under any circumstances.

Fox is under a different contract....and they do no play nice with Marvel/Disney..

So although i agree they have plenty of money, i dont think those rights are actually for sale..Now with that said, if DOFP doesnt make 700m (x2 of 350m budget) and FF is the predicted flop...well a Billion dollars from Disney might sound nice about then...

It is staying true to the source material.

The only reason there are mutants, superhumans and whatever else is due to a crucial point in human history in the Marvel comics universe. The Celestials came to earth and began experimenting on primitive man. From these experiments, sprang the Eternals. These were a race of humanoid beings with superhuman abilities and immortality.

At the early stages of the development of Homo Sapiens Sapiens, Eternals interbred with them. The Kree came along and experimented on a single group of humans and turned them into superpowered beings and closed them off from the rest of humanity.

The offspring of the Eternal/human interbreeding continued to exist into the modern day. They retained the Eternal gene that allowed the possibility of superpowers. However a catalyst was required. Radiation, adrenaline, Terrigen mists, super soldier serums and many other things became these catalysts.

The Inhumans gain their powers from the fact that Terrigen mists activate the Eternal gene in their bodies. Radiation activated the gene in the F4, Hulk, Captain America and many others. Mutant powers surface due to a huge release of adrenaline (Jean Grey seeing her friend hit by a car, etc.)

So you see, it couldn't be more accurate to the source material. It's based off the origins of the source material.

I do believe there is nothing wrong with making them inhumans, but I am already getting frustrated with people "inhumans were always cooler than mutants" "i love the inhumans"

No

The inhumans are lame, there are 3 people have ever cared about, black bolt, crystal, and medusa, and only Black Bolt is still relevant. They are a 2 bit knock off of the new gods and fourth world series.

FOX will never sell those rights. Why would they? So I think it's great that they're looking for another way to bring marvel mutants into the mcu. There are so many cool mutants! Yeah Of COURSE it's not true to source material...At least it's an alternative. The Inhumans is indeed a good idea.

People forget that we would not have a MCU if Marvel never sold the film rights to those other studios. Many of us began reading comics because of the TV shows from the 90's. Therefor, as the films right for the X-men are not in the hands of Marvel, it is still leaving room for Marvel to incorporate the idea of "Regular people unknowingly possess amazing abilities", which is the EXACT IDEA that made the X-men characters great.

If Fox did that then they would lose the rights to the characters.

I understand that Fox and Sony would not sell the rights back to marvel. I just never NEVER! understood why it was so hard to work out a good relationship with the other studio's. Why was it so hard for marvel/Disney to sit down with fox and sony and talk things out. why was it so hard to work out a deal where marvel can use its own charactcers. I just dont understand 1 thing, if marvel knew they where going full force in the movie business. And in creating a movie version of theyr comic univers, having sold soem of theyr properties they knew that these plot holes would apear soemwhere at the horizon. why did they not have certain clause in theyre contract wich state that they could allway's use theyr properties. I just dont understand why it had to come to this.

It's the experimentation that matters. The Eternals gave gifts to the human race through the millennia, some of which were power granting.

I agree with SageMode. It's a very smart move. However, once the Inhumans get brought into the MCU I can't think of any other teams left. Or at least worth using.

Plus, it was Kirby who presented the idea in his run on Eternals. He based it off the Ancient Aliens theory.

Well, the Defenders will be getting their tv series and Guardians comes out next year. We could always get a revamp Guardians team with the original members and I think with the introduction of the 'inhumans' in Avengers: AoU, the actual team will eventually find their way onto the screen.

On top of that, if they get really desperate, they could always try New Warriors and West Coast Avengers.

It is a decent idea but the Inhumans don't have any break out characters. They don't have a Wolverine or a Gambit. There are no characters with a built in mega-fanbase and that could be a problem.

I'm afraid a guy with a head shaped like an egg, a guy with goat legs, a woman who can move her hair with her mind and a teleporting dog won't be that successful in the mainstream.

Lockjaw could gain a pretty big fanbase. Him and Rocket Raccoon will be the next big things.

Lockjaw is also the second most powerful character in the 616 Universe.

@ NovaCorpsFan I hear what your saying but I think the new warriors or west coast avengers would be stretching it a whole lot. Hopefully they can make team-up movies like Powerman and Iron Fist. I would love to see the avengers team Norman Osborn put together. But being that Sony has him I know that's not happening. I really wish marvel had fantastic four rights. That would open doors for a whole lot of goodness.

Great editorial.

I agree with it and I think it's a great idea on Marvel's part. Some assume, "Why doesn't Marvel just buy back the rights?" It may not be that simple. What if Fox isn't willing to give up it's golden goose? And equally, it makes no business sense for Fox to share as it would put Fox in direct competition with MS using some of the same characters and that could lead to financial disaster for one or both studios.

Marvel is deprived of one of it's biggest money-makes, the X-men. Marvel has no choice but to use an alternate, the Inhumans, and try to make them as popular as can be for use in the MCU.

Scorch from AoS could turn out to have been an Inhuman, but I think you misheard the "terrigen" reference in "084." I think Fitz said "terajoules."
