The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had debuted with a measly $91.6 million while the King of Monsters hit two weeks later with a
monster (excuse the pun) amount of $93.2 million. While the difference might seem like pocket change to studios, it didn't stop many critics of
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to show the numbers as the
Spider-Man property's downfall. However, it appears it is time for
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 advocates to rejoice as
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 proved to have longer legs than its competition and brought in $187,111,831 by May 26th, the fourth weekend it was out. While it was a holiday weekend in the United States,
Godzilla was also able to use this to its advantage and, might I add, much more effectively due to having a higher novelty than the superhero sequel.
Godzilla had managed to take in $7.5 million on that day alone, which gave it a huge advantage over the second Monday
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 gross of $2.25 million.
Godzilla, still, has proven to be more successful, at least domestically, with the $160 million put into the production costs than
The Amazing Spider-Man 2, whose budget, optimistically, fell to $200 million and even went as high as $255 million, not including insane marketing costs reaching into the region of $150-180 million. Despite
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 having made about $2 million more (which, again, is pocket change to studios) by this point than
Godzilla, which has managed $185,966,351 upon June 9th (the same day counted for
The Amazing Spider-Man 2), it is clear that
Godzilla is the more successful film domestically. Still,
The Amazing Spider-Man 2's international grosses, again, come to the rescue as it helps push Spider-Man to victory by approximately $300 million, which covers both the difference in production and marketing. With
Godzilla still set to smash his way into the box office of China, a major player in the global box office,
Godzilla could start to close that gap leaving only a small margin of victory for the web-slinger. And, considering the expectations for both films, it is hard to say that
Godzilla was not more successful than Spider-Man, despite the financial reasoning.
Both movies are set for sequels with
The Amazing Spider-Man 3 set to hit theatres on June 10, 2016 and the sequel to
Godzilla expected to arrive after a new
Star Wars spin-off that Gareth Edwards is directing.
