GODZILLA Fails To Stomp On THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

GODZILLA Fails To Stomp On THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

While many had celebrated THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2's downfall to GODZILLA on its opening weekend, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 has proven it has longer legs than the monster flick as, by this point in time, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 had made more money than GODZILLA. Hit the jump to check it out!

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
had debuted with a measly $91.6 million while the King of Monsters hit two weeks later with a monster (excuse the pun) amount of $93.2 million. While the difference might seem like pocket change to studios, it didn't stop many critics of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to show the numbers as the Spider-Man property's downfall. However, it appears it is time for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 advocates to rejoice as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 proved to have longer legs than its competition and brought in $187,111,831 by May 26th, the fourth weekend it was out. While it was a holiday weekend in the United States, Godzilla was also able to use this to its advantage and, might I add, much more effectively due to having a higher novelty than the superhero sequel. Godzilla had managed to take in $7.5 million on that day alone, which gave it a huge advantage over the second Monday The Amazing Spider-Man 2 gross of $2.25 million. Godzilla, still, has proven to be more successful, at least domestically, with the $160 million put into the production costs than The Amazing Spider-Man 2, whose budget, optimistically, fell to $200 million and even went as high as $255 million, not including insane marketing costs reaching into the region of $150-180 million. Despite The Amazing Spider-Man 2 having made about $2 million more (which, again, is pocket change to studios) by this point than Godzilla, which has managed $185,966,351 upon June 9th (the same day counted for The Amazing Spider-Man 2), it is clear that Godzilla is the more successful film domestically. Still, The Amazing Spider-Man 2's international grosses, again, come to the rescue as it helps push Spider-Man to victory by approximately $300 million, which covers both the difference in production and marketing. With Godzilla still set to smash his way into the box office of China, a major player in the global box office, Godzilla could start to close that gap leaving only a small margin of victory for the web-slinger. And, considering the expectations for both films, it is hard to say that Godzilla was not more successful than Spider-Man, despite the financial reasoning.

Both movies are set for sequels with The Amazing Spider-Man 3 set to hit theatres on June 10, 2016 and the sequel to Godzilla expected to arrive after a new Star Wars spin-off that Gareth Edwards is directing.

TASM2 is only inches close towards reaching $700million worldwide. @Jojo might be right about all top 4 comic book movies reaching the $700million club this year...

CA:TWS: Worldwide: $709,863,996

TASM2: Worldwide: $698,549,297

XM:DOFP: Worldwide: $619,254,387

@Lozzy

I think a Guardians will be the highest grossing CBM this year. Sure TMNT might put a slight dent in it's earnings it I think it'll still turn out very successful. Expendables, TMNT and Guardians will be the only heavy hitters that month. Guardians and TMNT will be duking it out the most due to their 3D format screenings.

I dunno, guys the talking Racoon, Aliens and Vin Diesel might all bring in the heavy seats. Plus the chicks like Rocket. lol I'm extremely jealous just thinking it'll outdo all the other CBMs this year but I'm sure it'll be a fun ride.

However, I will say..."Don't sleep on the Apes!"

Cap2 could be the biggest boxoffice for a CBM this year (not including TF).

This is nothing to celebrate for Spidey. The story for Spider-Man is that its domestic take has dropped with each successive film.

ASM2 is the most expensive movie of the franchise and it won't make more than 710 millions.

@themidnightking

Ah man, I would most def have to say "Josh Brolin's" take on Thanos. Ronan and Nebula. I want to see how all of these villains are tied to one another and exactly how this film does connect things to the MCU. Most of all I'm excited for Easter eggs as well, since this film is taking the MCU to the outer limits I'm wondering what other cosmic characters they'll give nods to. I can sorta see why Marvel was so big headed on getting F4, Galactus and the Silver Surfer. Guardians would've been a great tease for characters like Galactus.

But anyway yeah, before I get off track again I'll confirm my answer that I am most likely looking forward to the villains in the film and their ties with one another. I'm a sucker for great villains and so far from the MCU: Obadiah Stane, Red Skull (even though I wanted to see more of Weaving's take on the character) and Loki are my favorite villains in that order.

THOR made more than 400. And now everyone sees a Marvel movie just for being a Marvel movie. 300 is really low, 400 is a better bet.

I doubt that GotG will make 700 million, without a doubt it will make a buttload of money (I'm guessing 350-450 million). But 700 million? It would need a miracle to make that kind of cash money. It doesn't have the luxury of having no competition or the awareness of it's brand, Marvel brand aside. However, if it does make 700 million, I'll own up to being wrong.

Those numbers quoted, if true, means ASM2 is still way in the red....Nothing to celebrate at all...

GotG will do the 600s....Spidey in the 700s, Dofp probably upper 600s...Cap will win the year, and GotG being the newest kid on the block probably will bring up the rear...

Two things: Godzilla did better than expected whereas Spider-man had a disappointing turnout, and Godzilla has yet to open in several box offices, mainly China and Japan.

Godzilla may not have made as much as Spidey yet, but for what they were, Godzilla is doing better.

TASM2 was much better than way too many people on this site give it credit. I still like Spidey2 better, but TASM2 is second best of the five Spidey movies so far.

I think its biggest problem is they've released too many Spidey movies in too short a time for most moviegoers.

Also, the money from DVD & Blu-ray sales will help all of these films.
