How Will Stephen Strange Be Different from Tony Stark?

I was watching a movie and I noticed a little more than a few similarities between to resident Marvel bad boys...

Let me get this out of the way. I am not a huge Doctor Strange fan. I know the basics of the character but I never rushed out to pick up his comic or anything so tell me if I'm wrong in the comments.

I was watching the first Iron Man movie that came out in 2008. Before this I brushed up on my Doctor Strange just to make sure I was familar with the character with his movie being part of Phase Three in the future. So I was watching Iron Man and I noticed something very peculiar about the characters.

They're pretty similar.

I was talking with my friend and we were talking about who could play Doctor Strange and he said Robert Downey Jr. I was like "Yeah too bad he's Iron Man though." I think Marvel is trying on purpose to get away from the fact that comic book Doctor Strange and RDJ look extremely alike. I believe that's why Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch's names were listed as possibilities because they want a new spin on the character.

The similarities go beyond looks though. Their origins are very similar as well. Both were on top the world, kind of a dick to everyone then blah blah blah something happens and they become a selfless hero. I personally think alot of people (assuming they keep with Strange's origin) will feel like the first hour or so is just them rewatching Iron Man. I was just curious to see if anyone noticed this as well. Personally, I think they do need a new, more realistic spin on the character. Not too ealistic, I mean we're talking about a surgeon turned sorcerer here. But little things should be made more realistic. I hope they don't expect us to believe falling off a cliff in a car only injures your hands. Tweak small stuff like that.

Also, if they keep with this origin and don't change anything from the comics, should Marvel acknowledge it? I think that would be intresting to see RDJ share some quips with the actor who plays Strange about their similarities. Do you see what I mean? Or do you feel Strange and Stark no similarities or characteristics at all?

I'd like to see Tony get a bit of a complex meeting someone who's like him.
He always thinks he's the smartest, most charming guy in the room so give him someone who can match that.

It's why I want Colin Farrell for Strange.
His career is quite similar to RDJ (talent, drug abuse, controversy, resurgence) and if anyone can play a charming ass it's Colin.

I think I've found the sexiest picture on them internets.

@Harrowing

Thanks! And yeah, Doc is probably gonna be set up as a replacement. So I think Farrell would be perfect! The two are so very similar like I've said.

I'd be so happy with Hardy and Cumberbatch, but I think they have more "intensity" on screen rather than a Stark-like charm that Colin Farrell could bring.

You can tell a lot about a man from his taste in booze. I'd start there.

In all seriousness, Strange's experiences have humbled him, so yeah.. he's still got the charm and wit, but it's tempered by all that "New Age", third eye rubbish they feed you in books. Tamed, if you will.

I know the feeling.

But, yeah.. I mean, it all depends on how they play up the dynamics, really, but the similarities is where the fun comes in, as far as I'm concerned.

Strange is all about the mystic, so I'd like to see how Tony reconciles that with his POV. Anyway, that's just me.

I really hope Cumberbatch becomes Strange, and it would be smart for Marvel to recruit him because he is a hot commodity. Here are my reasons:
-He is got the talent to make Strange a really interesting character.
-He's got a big following, specially girls.
-He's got enough geek cred from being Sherlock, Khan and the voice of Smaug.
-He has not played a CBM character yet.
I can't really foresee anyone else doing a great job with this character.

Kevin Fiege's said about a year ago that dr Strange would be the Iron Man of the MCU past AoU.

"blah blah blah something happens and they become a selfless hero"

lol. You can't gloss over two different origins like that and then claim they are similar. You can describe ANY super-hero the way you just did.

The bottom line is, these characters are worlds apart. Sure they both have goatees and were rich before they became superheroes, but thats where the similarities end.

How about the fact that Stark owns a weapons company and creates tools of death and destruction, yet Strange was a surgeon and SAVED lives.

How about the fact that their personalities couldn't be any more different?

How about the fact that their origins and powers are totally different?

Yeah...nothing in common aside from having money and a goatee.

@Cherry

Check out Tom Hardy in RocknRolla. He definitely has a side of him that isn't intense haha

Tony Stark is deep and heavily surrounded by technology. Stephen Strange is more associated towards magic. Tony Stark actually dislikes magic becuase he see's it as an easy way to get out of troubling situations.

Tony Stark in the MCU has very few dark themes which surround him. Tony Stark was hinted to becoming an alcoholic, his best friend betrayed him, Stark was on the verge of death, Stark's parent's where assassinated. The list keeps going on. Tony Stark's narcissism is a cloak of embodiment to hide his vulnerabilities from the people he comes into contact with. We could say that Tony Stark enjoy's life but he is also a workaholic in which he's trying to protect people from various threats with his iron man suits.

Stephen Strange was eccentric before he became in deep with mystic and sorcerey, so you could use the fact that he was arrogant and selfish from the comic books and have the character become more mature, peaceful and calm. Strange is more of a serious hero and is more complex to me personally than Stark.

I would have loved for an unknown to be cast in the role of Doctor Strange. I think the actor Hugh Dancy can catch the complex character of Strange especially with the actor's work on the tv show Hannibal.

Stark and Strange are both rich and don't care one whit about the people around them before they become super heroes. But Stark's an ass because he's only interested in his job/hobby whereas Strange is only in it for the money. That difference makes Strange much more malicious. Stark just needs a wake up call, Strange hears that call and denies it multiple times in various flashbacks.

And then after they become heroes Stark is still a businessman and has to deal with how to combine that with his hero persona while Strange is very specifically not. Stark still gets hung up in his hobbies and ignores people around him, he's still learning. Strange on the other hand has made a full heel face turn and is all about helping everyone around him. (Funny thing, they once tried to give Strange common concerns by putting a tax collector at his door, one or two issues later they realize this is a stupid idea and he just conjures up some money out of thin air and that plot thread gets ejected out the airlock.)

Most of the characters in the Marvel U are still figuring out how to do this whole hero thing. Strange is already done with that, he's completed the hero's journey in full at the end of his origin story. This, oddly enough, makes him much more like a DC character, not a dude with incidental powers rolling with the punches life throws him, but someone who's already figured it out and is now doing his best to do the best he can.

If I were making the movie the origin would be a five to ten minute flashback sequence somewhere just before the middle of the running time. This to set it apart from Iron Man and because its simply not necessary and even detrimental to devote too much time to it. Too much investigation into that part murders the air of mystery he needs to have an impact and only raises more questions that (to be answered) would take up valuable time to develop the characters and plot.

And with that I wrote another editorial on Strange in a comment thread...

Marvel has stated several times they plan for Strange to be the Marvel linchpin moving forward. And here's a big factor, in the original infinity story it was Dr. Strange (and the Silver Surfer) that got everyone to ware Thanos was in order to fight him. Having strange eliminates a lot of logistic questions like "how the he'll did all these heros get all over the cosmos?". Strange did it!

The big difference is Robert Downey Jr. Changed Iron Man. Iron Man in the comics was just a shade less douchee than Hank Pym, and he definitely had the arrogance and swagger but he also had this sort of Batman esque "I know what's right for you better than you do" mentality. He's also an ends justify the means kind of character. Downey changed him a lot. He's not the over protective papa so much and He's got a ton of humor which let me know if I'm wrong but He didn't seem to have so much in the comics. Remember he was basically Marvel's batman in a robot suit. Strange on the other hand was darker, more deliberate, more thoughtful, more of a deep and spiritual guy. Who fell more on the side of the poor and hopeless. I see Iron Man as sort of the GHW Bush of the Marvel universe, before he became old and creepy and the pres he was a certified baddass CIA agent and War hero who also had a ton of [frick]ing money and wanted us to say no to drugs. Strange is more the Dhali Lama of the Marvel Universe. He'd like us all to sing Koom Bai Ya while he communes with the spirity realm. For that reason I think Strange should be played by Jared Leto. Cumberbatch comes with too much danger imo. I also think If they want to go English they should really make an Excalibur Movie. I know they have copyrighted Alpha Flight why not Excalibur. Only 1 mutant In the group if I remember correctly

Or if they are talking to hardy or Cumberbatch I think playing Baron Mordo for either of those dudes would be perfect opposite a smaller younger and more frail Jared Leto

Jared Leto could, would and should play Dr. Strange. I'm not one for fan casting but he'd a fantastic actor and I think he can pull off most anything like Johnny Depp used to before he got stuck playing Jack sparrow. JL is perfect. I think Hardy is great for Mad Max but not doc. Cumberbatch would be great to but I think Leto is just a much stronger actor.

Strange is also going to have to be willing to pop up in the Defenders mini series so They need a guy who hasn't gotten to big for his britches. I feel like Cumberbatch and Leto haven't
