What do you think of.. the constant rebooting of Spider-Man and The Hulk films? Has Hollywood run out of ideas?

I think they've always been desperate for ideas. The place burns on them; it’s the fuel that keeps Hollywood going. If an idea makes money, they will keep using it till it dries up, and so far superhero movies have been getting bigger and bigger. This year you’ve got three or four major ones that are going to make a lot of money, but next year it’s going to get crazy. You’ve got the sequel to The Dark Knight, which will make a billion dollars; and there’s a brilliant team behind this Spider-Man reboot, that’ll be colossal; and you’ve got The Avengers movie, which looks like it’ll be the biggest of the lot. The minute that parabolic curve reaches its peak they’ll start to slow down, but Hollywood’s found a gold mine here and they’re going to keep digging.

I notice that one of the films in your programme, Griff The Invisible, sounds remarkably similar to Kick-Ass – a kind of Australian take on it. How does it feel seeing that your work's inspiring others?

It’s nice, I guess. Imitation is the sincerest form of plagiarism, you know. But it’s great that someone was into Kick-Ass and has done their sort of Australian version. I’d be annoyed if they’d managed to get their movie out before me, though.

The reason I programmed it is that I thought it would be nice to see a non-American superhero movie. An Australian take on the superheroes is something I quite fancy seeing.

Nucking futs indeed, Intruder. Nucking futs indeed! :)

But in terms of street walking wannabe hero films, Defendor gets my vote hands down. I enjoyed it more than Kick-ass and from the looks of Griff's trailer, it's just not blowing my skirt up.

2011 just started, but yet I can't wait for next year.

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." Millar misquoted that one.

@skidz- He was joking. It's a play on the phrase.

As sick as this year is going to be for cb/sci-fi/fantasy movies, I am so looking forward to 2012! Let's hope the proverbial "parabolic curve" doesn't come for a long, long time!

Or "Plagierism is the sincerest form of assault & battery" - it's a piss-take line.

@stranger X

I know exactly what you mean;

2012 will explode with good movies. Dark Knight Rises, Avengers, and Spider-Man are all tied for my top pick. Also looking forward to Star Trek 2, Ice Age 4, The Wolverine (likely a 2012 release), and Man Of Steel.

i hate that statement. "hollywood has run out of ideas."

its like people don't realize that the number of original movies that come out every year far outweigh all the reboots and remakes.

"Hollywood has run out of ideas." Not true. The problem is the huge cost of making a movie. Making a sequel to a well-known and successful film is close to a sure thing -- even poor sequels will usually break even. Making a unique and original film is a huge risk -- look at how "Scott Pilgrim" crashed and burned at the Box Office.

Well-known comic characters are great sources for movies because there is an already established fanbase who will talk up the film. But if you come up with something that is new and fresh, you have to find an audience, which is difficult.

"You know, Hollywood is completely out of ideas and all they do is adapt and remake things. Anyway, check out my next book which is pretty much a pre-existing superhero, only with more violence and swearing. Plus, I wrote it solely to be adapted into a movie because I only see comics as a screenplay that's more likely to get picked up because it's what's in right now. I'm Mark Millar and I'm a dick!"

CDB- Well that's very true and what localman said as well. And since those types of films garner more money, people naturally give them more attention and forget about all the other ones, making them generalise about how Hollywood isn't original anymore.

CONSTANT reboots of Spider-Man and the Hulk? Unless I've heard wrong, there has been only one reboot of the Hulk (which was successful in restoring the good name of the character and salvaged a potential franchise) and one reboot of Spider-Man, which is still filming the last I heard. One reboot each is HARDLY what I would define as "constant". What an awful question!

Millar does make some good points about the state of ideas in Hollywood. Unfortunately, part of the problem now is that movies cost so damn much, because of this stupid 3D nonsense and the overreliance on CGI, that studios are naturally gunshy about taking risks.
