A Point of Geeks report
Well it's that special time of the month again... where we highlight the upcoming movies we think will be worth checking out. From a distance the month of August looked to be Guardians of the Galaxy and everything else. From a quality standpoint that may be true, but there are a lot of movies with a high fun-factor. Make sure you take the time to look at each clip, they are full of awesomeness! So let's check them out!
Guardians of the Galaxy - August 1st
The first movie out of the gates is Marvel's newest addition to their cinematic universe, Guardians of the Galaxy. There should be hundreds of things going against this movie, a talking tree and raccoon for starters. However, that doesn't outweigh the thousands of reasons to see the Guardians on-screen. Another aspect of the movie which is not being focused on by marketing, is the talented supporting cast aside from the heroic five. John C. Reilly (Step-brothers), Glenn Close (Damages), Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond), Benicio Del Toro (The Usual Suspects) and Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men) are all in the film and all have at least been nominated for Academy Awards. All signs are pointing towards this being something special.
Wanna see a five minute sequence from the movie right now? (We know ya did...)
Into the Storm - August 8th
I'm a sucker for a found footage movie. Plus I spent an entire season hoping that The Walking Dead's Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) would get sucked up into a tornado. However despite having what looks to be photorealistic CGI, it makes me a little uneasy to get behind this magnitude of disaster porn. Plus I will have other priorities that weekend, namely the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles which opens the same day. So while I won't rush out to see this in theaters. This seems prime material for a drive-in or a lazy afternoon matinee to kill some time, but it is very low on the priority list.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - August 8th
Turtle Power Featurette
I've been a Ninja Turtle fan from the beginning. Not just a fan of the original classic cartoon, but also of the mature graphic novels in which all incarnations spawned from. The above clip and the videos to come really encapsulate the true spirit of the Turtles, in all their various incarnations. No one was more skeptical of the development of this film than me, but now that it's here and the vision of the filmmakers is apparent... I am on the bandwagon. It looks like a fun hour and a half with the Ninja Turtles in the year 2014 and that looks to be a nostalgic and exciting ride.
Check out the new "Ninja Rap":
Here is a sneak peek at the Snow Chase sequence from all the trailers. Looks exciting...
"Snow Chase" Clip
Seeing this should simply make ya smile...
"Ninja Beats/Cowabunga" TV Spot
Take a look at the original. It really does seem like director Johnathan Liebesman (Battle Los Angeles) understands the core of the Ninja Turtles and what makes them tick, both individually and as a group. They could be tricking me with marketing, regardless, I will be there to find out.
Let's Be Cops - August 13th
The plot is simple, two goofballs dress up like the police and wreck havoc. The tone is refreshingly 80's with it's fun factor being the focus, over the consequences of what they are really doing. It looks like a good comedy to keep things simple and light. It's also really cool how Damon Wayans cloned himself. (Wait that's his son? ...Hmmpffh.. You really expect me to believe that?)
Seems like it will be worth a look.
Hey if nothing else, the movie features the song, The Pit. One of the coolest music videos for geeks, to come out in the past year.
The Expendables 3 - August 15th
If I had a time machine, I would use it to go back in time to tell my childhood self one thing. And it wouldn't be that one day we would have cell phones, wireless internet or electric cars. No, I would tell myself that, "One day... yes one day. You will see a movie starring Arnold 'Terminator' Schwarzenegger, Sylvester 'Rambo' Stallone, Harrison 'Han Solo or Indiana Jones' Ford, Mel "Mad Max' Gibson, Antonio 'Desperado' Banderas, and Wesley 'Blade' Snipes." My little child-sized head would have exploded and I would have ceased to exist, Back to the Future style... Good thing time machines don't come cheap. But I digress...
It's for that very reason that I will be in a seat opening weekend, wondering about the mortality of all human-kind. I will get to watch the once invincible action heroes of my youth, creep into senior-citizen status with assault rifles around their shoulders. Things have played out exactly as they should have...
Final Trailer
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For - August 22nd
The sequel that came much too late... It is hard to get too excited for this one. However, this is yet another August film with an incredibly talented cast. Most of the original is back, plus Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Josh Brolin just to name a few. And who can ever get enough of Mickey Rourke's Marv? At the least it will be a stylized noir romp... and we don't get those everyday. It wouldn't shock me if this was better than expected.
Nothing like a stylish trailer to pull you back into the world of Sin City. This is the definition of a head trip:
