PRESS RELEASE: THE HOBBIT, LOOPER, MEN IN BLACK 3 And More On Oscar Makeup Shortlist

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have narrowed down their selections for the "Best Makeup and Hairstyling" Oscar to seven films. Included on the list are various fantasy and sci-fi movies covered here on CBM over the past year. Hit the jump for details!

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that seven films remain in competition in the Makeup and Hairstyling category for the 85th Academy Awards®.

The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

"Hitchcock"
"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey"
"Les Misérables"
"Lincoln"
"Looper"
"Men in Black 3"
"Snow White and the Huntsman"

On Saturday, January 5, all members of the Academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films. Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.

The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre™ at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

Hitchcock, Les Misérables, and Lincoln will get nominated. The people who decide the Oscars are pretentious film snobs who think that the only good movies are period pieces, silent films, and biopics.
I'm not saying these films will be bad though.

People saying they are surprised that 'Cloud Atlas' isn't on the list has clearly not seen 'Cloud Atlas'.

As much as I loved The Hobbit, the make-up wasn't very good. Many of the Dwarves' prosthetics looked really fake and unnatural. My biggest complaint was with how they botched Ian Holm's appearance.

He's aged ten years in real life, making him over 80 years old now -- but they could have done a much better job of getting him to look like he did in FotR... It's like they weren't too concerned with it or something. The way Old Bilbo looked bothered me that entire scene.

@DoctorDoak- I agree, that is one of my biggest beefs with the hobbit was that they used too much cgi and not enough prosthetic.

@CoLest: Right! He has changed in ten years, and I read that he has some health concerns... But this awful job they did for Sir Ian Holm still bugs me! From the start, they screwed up the wig. and the CG work looks like the alien Prof X at the end of X-MO:W... With better make-up and a little more care they could have had him looking exactly like he did in FotR.
