Chapter 18 - IN THE CARPATHIAN CITADEL: We're shown the interior of a castle through slow, deliberate camera push-ins, panning past mounds of melted and re-solidified candle wax spilling over the edges of a wooden dining hall table like gothic confectionery. Past the sound of freezing rain pelting a stained glass window at gale force speeds, the omniscient camera scans a stone wall adorned with banners, swords, and coats-of-arms before setting upon a most unsettling image— DOCTOR DOOM's armor sitting menacingly on the Latverian throne, metallic fingers interlocked, a green hood darkening the suit's glowering visage, then someone in black pajamas intrudes into the shot carrying two chalices and sets them on the table. CENTURY CITY, CALIFORNIA - A mild drizzle dampens the concrete skyline of this West Coast metropolitan, rain-hazed traffic lights aren't doing commuters any favors in this gridlocked downtown area. Suddenly a strange, sky phenomenon appears over the city and grabs their attention, but it's not a row of lights or a weird cloud, it has the appearance of an INVISIBLE UFO, shaped like an assymetrical diamond, only made visible by the lack of rain in whatever space this massive object occupies. It's passing between the buildings now, so everyone abandons their vehicular canopies to catch a glimpse of this sky anomaly, an image that even their waterproof camera phones have trouble capturing.
INT. NASA HQ - Susan, Franklin, Alyssa, Wilhelm, and Meribeth are all convened in the Space Center's northwest corner unit, where Alyssa has deployed and assumed control of a new space probe, its camera feed is displayed across a large monitor for all to see. "How is this probe different from any other? Won't we lose contact once it enters a dead zone?" Ben now leads a battalion of infantrymen in digital camouflage through the littered city streets, an ANTI-AIRCRAFT MISSILE SYSTEM's turret tilts back on a military vehicle, and as The M'Kraan's ominous shape encroaches over them, Ben's massive hand signals the men to hold, "Aim everything you got at the big, invisible diamond in the sky, and fire on my command!" The soldiers take knees and take aim with their RPGs, "Ready! Aaaand CLOBBER 'EM!" Flurries of fiery smoke streak behind guided missiles, up towards the diamond-shaped, blurred patch of sky, but Annihilus sees the oncoming missiles on a hexagonal, holographic monitor in front of him, "Filthy mongrels!" With the slightest hand gesture, the alien warlord drags-and-drops his holo-screen to a neighboring space, so that the human army's artillery enters one flat face of The M'Kraan Crystal, then reflects straight back through the neighboring facet, effectively causing all of these antitank/anti-aircraft missiles that they thought would explode inside the ship, to propel back towards the business district's bank buildings, and a few ricochet back at them. We pan across a panarama of soldiers evading their own missiles, Ben's mouth is agape when a bazooka shell strikes him square in his stoney face, he scrapes the blackened munition fragments from his face and ascends to his feet, beholding all the chaos he now feels responsible for, having given the order to fire.
