Shawn Levy Offers Up An Update On The Status Of A REAL STEEL Sequel

Believe it or not, it's been three years since the release of Real Steel starring Hugh Jackman (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Evangeline Lilly (Ant-Man). So, is a sequel still in the works? Hit the jump to find out what director Shawn Levy had to say about just that!

Real Steel was a fun robot movie, and a pretty exciting boxing one too, but a sequel has for some reason never been made. The movie did well at the box office earning a little under $300 million worldwide, and though there has been talk of a follow-up since the first was released in 2011, it just hasn't happened. So, now that a few years have passed, is it too late for a Real Steel 2? Is it even in the works? Here's what director Shawn Levy told Superhero Hype in a recent interview.

"We have been quietly developing a sequel to ‘Real Steel’ for three and a half years. We’ve come up with some great scripts but Hugh and I would only make it if the plot feels fresh, but also the character journeys feel fresh, and we’ve found both but never at the same time. It’s ongoing. I know the clock is ticking. That movie, weirdly, for a movie that did very well globally–it did okay domestically–but the love for ‘Real Steel’ remains kind of unique as far as rabid fans who ask me all the time for another one. Hugh and I love that movie so if we can crack it, we’ll make it, but I have this sense that we better make that happen soon or frankly, the audience may not be there in the same way. So we shall see."

So, it doesn't sound all that likely! It's a shame, because the characters in Real Steel are easily marketable, but they seemed to have failed to strike while the iron was hot, meaning that those who enjoyed the sequel three years ago possibly wouldn't be all that interested now. It's possible though, and there's nothing to say it couldn't be an even bigger hit. What do you think?

Hmm, I never actually thought about a sequel. I haven't seen the movie in over a year, but I do remember it being pretty decent. Eh, I guess a sequel would be okay, I mean, I'd see it, I'm just not really asking for one.

I liked the first movie I found it to be pretty good but over 5 years to wait for a sequel. Unless the sequel is amazing it is going to bomb hard you just can't wait that long to put out a sequel.

Ha, I actually really enjoyed Real Steel. Solid, entertaining movie with some great performances.

But I never really even thought of it getting a sequel. That's news to me. Not sure anyone cares much about a sequel at this point.

@OdinSon2k14 Exactly. That's the reason Sin City 2 isn't even in the top 13 at the box office right now. Nobody wants to see a sequel to a movie they can't even remember.

@pointman Prisoners did very well, Les Mis did amazing.

I liked Real Steel. It was really engaging, and the kid wasn't annoying. I'd be down for a sequel, definitely.

Don't forget Swordfish and the fantastic The Prestige.

@MercwithMouth Whoopsies. Pretty much all of the wide-release movies he's starred in have done very well at the box office.

I liked the Prestige until the ending with Tesla and Jackman's greatest magic trick. I never really understood why Nolan decided to go with the super sci-fi completely out of place with the rest of the film. I mean the rest of the film is set in the early 1900's and then he pulls the out of nowhere sci-fi device. Found the rest of the movie to be good but the device just brought the whole movie down. Pretty hard not to when it is so damn out of place.

@pesmerga44

The first time I saw it, it took me right out of it, too. It was such a leap. But the more I watched it, I realized what the message was. It became, to me, about the responsibility to take science seriously. The way that Bale's character treated his clone compared to the way Jackman treated all of his. It was a heavy-handed way of showing it, but after a few watches, it doesn't seem out of place, and it is handled beautifully.

@MercwithMouth Completely agree about The Prestige. It seems like a massive, out-of-nowhere leap for Nolan to make, but it had a point to it IMO. Plus, it really was heavily foreshadowed for practically the entire movie. I mean, Michael Caine's character keeps saying that "the prestige" is the turning point in a trick, the solution that NO ONE sees coming. So it made sense that the plot twist would fool the audience as well.

This is one of Nolan's most brilliant films IMO.

Agreed. And having the brilliance of Caine doing the hidden exposition is awesome.

I liked the first one. Sure, it's Rocky with Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, but it's a really well-made Rocky with Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots.

My hope is that the sequel will show us where Atom comes from. Someone made that robot, and with how famous he got, that person must have noticed.

Pretty close between Prestige, Inception, and Momento for me.

@sinsear912

pointman asked if Jackman had any hits besides X-men films and people brought up his other movies Les Miz, Swordfish, and Prestige.

@MercWithMouth

Okay fine it still feels completely out of place for me with this movie. Maybe I need to re watch it again but from what I remember Bale didn't do what Jackman did that was his actual twin brother. I thought him sending Jackman to Tesla was just a way to get rid of him because no one, even Tesla himself, knew what his machine did. Again the ending just didn't flow with the rest of the movie and the supposed message, if that is what Nolan was going for, seems completely out of nowhere.

many Hugh Jackman movies flopped in USA.

but for some reason, people and his fans forgot it. He's not that big of a deal, but hollywood loves to sell their actors, I guess.
