The Academy Unveils Visual Effects Oscar Contenders

"Avatar," "Watchmen," "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" among Oscar hopefuls...

From Variety writer David S Cohen:

The Motion Picture Academy released its long list of 15 contenders for the Visual Effects Oscar Friday, and there were some surprises, both in what made it, and what didn't.

Animated features "Coraline" and "Disney's A Christmas Carol" are still in the running, but already gone from contention are "The Lovely Bones," "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and "Night at the Museum 2," all of which boasted extensive digital vfx.

The 15 still in the Oscar race are: "Angels & Demons"; "Avatar"; "Coraline"; "Disney's A Christmas Carol"; "District 9"; "G-Force"; "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra"; "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince"; "Sherlock Holmes"; "Star Trek"; "Terminator Salvation"; "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"; "2012"; "Watchmen"; "Where the Wild Things Are."

Three of the titles are in stereoscopic 3D (S3D): "Avatar," "Coraline" and "G-Force." The S3D in "Coraline" is likely a factor that helped it beat out titles with more digital vfx.

Lucasfilm's Industrial Light & Magic worked on five of the 15: "Avatar," "Harry Potter," "Star Trek," "Terminator Salvation" and "Transformers 2." Digital Domain, off last year's win for "Benjamin Button," has four contenders: "2012," "G.I. Joe," "Star Trek" and "Transformers.

Though its "The Lovely Bones" isn't in the race, Weta Digital is among the several shops with a pair of contenders: "Avatar," for which it was the lead shop, and "District 9."

The most notable omission from the list was Paramount's "The Lovely Bones," from helmer Peter Jackson and Weta Digital. Weta Digital is amply represented, though, with "District 9" and the category's most touted title for the year, "Avatar."

The inclusion of "Disney's A Christmas Carol" confirms the Acad's vfx branch is open to considering effects in CG-animated features, a point of controversy in tech circles.

Among distribs, Warners has four contenders; Paramount and Sony have three apiece, Disney has two.

Fox has only one, but it's "Avatar." Universal's only entry comes from its specialty label, Focus, which distribbed "Coraline" -- always a bad sign for a studio, since vfx contenders typically line up with box office leaders.

The vfx branch's executive committee will pick from this list in early January to determine the seven pics for the visual effects bakeoff.

The bakeoff will be held at the Academy's Goldwyn Theater on January 21.

Here's hoping for a Watchmen win but I think Avatar will steamroll the f/x categories.

GI Joe?!!! Are you f-ing kidding me?!!! Those were some of the worst visual effects I have EVER seen!!! I really don't understand how ILM could have been involved w/ that piece of $hit!

i actually would prefer ROTF to win.
everyone here will agree that the extensive special effects used in the movie were top notch.
i honestly couldn't believe how much improvement there was from the first movie.
of course i am kind of biased because i am still p.o.ed that Golden Compass beat out Transformers for special effects in 2007.
so either ROTF or Avatar.
that's my bid.
@IronClad:
ILM didn't do the effects for GI JOE. Digital Domain did. 'Nuff said.

@Wadey09: aaaahhh correct you are. maybe if i wasn't reeling from the punch to the gut after seeing GI Joe got any kind of nod for anything i'd have been able to read the article a little more thoroughly.

G.I.Joe had bad effects, but Watchmen, District 9, and Avatar all have good effects. I would also like it if Watchmen got nominated for Best Picture, but that's a long shot.

District 9, hands down. I mean, it looked AMAZINIG, and it had a budget of around 30 mill compared to the awful effects of wolverine and gi joes 300 mill. District 9 was the number 1 movie of the year in my opinion, followed by watchmen and up!

woo hoo!

G.I. JOE's effects were awful. Even Stephen Sommers himself said the shot where the team just picked up Duke and Ripcord and are bringing them back to the pit and the sand goes back and the door opens up for the plane to land through is one of the worst shots and he hated it during the commentary on the blu ray. Guess what Stephen.....so did we!

district 9, avatar and.... where the wild things are will be the top runners I bet
and they will give it to avatar of course. Cause from what it sounds like from the revues... its not like anything any body has seen before in a 3d movie.

Coraline was pretty impressive too. It was the first movie to use 3D as part of the storytelling and not some gadget.

D9 was an incredible movie. Best of the year IMO. It will be a shame if the only oscar nod it gets is for VE. Sharlto Copley for best actor. D9 for best picture. Nothing else was as original in style as D9 and Copley's portryal was intense.

I LOVED Watchmen but I really do not expect it to get any Oscar nods.

GI Joe...they have to be kidding me?

Avatar, Sherlock...Please they aren't even out yet. I get the release dates are all a part of it but come on. This is obvious favoritism.

FWIIW I think both will be enjoyable just not Oscar worthy though I could be wrong of course.

Watchmen should win. The visual beauty of it is just breathtaking. I have a 24x36 Rorschach poster on my wall, of him standing at the end of a street on a rainy day,
"This city is afraid of me. I've seen its true face."

Every time I look at it I go back to the first amazing time I saw the movie

Sherlock Holmes and Avatar are not out YES. However, they will be out by year's end and in the case of Avatar. It is going to to need all of the help its gonna get in order to help it break even from the $500 million dollar budget it has on its head.

Nine times out of ten, when I movie of the time period has a huge price tag in its making it usually has the stigma of being a bomb.

A few of the many examples that I can think of but not limited to of course.

2006-Superman Returns and the $200 million dollar budget it had on its head.

1995-Waterworld, at the time it had a $120 million dollar budget, the highest of that time frame. Now that is like the average of what movies are being made today.

1986-Dune. Don't know the numbers if how much it was was made but it was a pretty penny. It was a dull, piece of shit as director, David Lynch took way too many liberties and ignored the entire source material.

Ishtar-Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman's then expensive budget bomb still falls as one of if not the worst movies ever made.

Just to name a few of the long many.

Not considering Avatar until I see it, I think Star Trek has my vote. However, I think we have all been blown away by the Trailers for Avatar so; a little forshadowing there.

District 9 all the way, the effects were flawless.

I'm with Rorshach all the way on this one. When they showed the news UFO footage in D9, I got chills down my spine. All the rest was just gravy.

However, Watchmen made very elegant use of its effects, so I feel it more deserving than most.

Avatar - the original $500 million BOMB!!! hehe nah, we'll see...

InTylerWeTrust - 12/12/2009, 12:24 PM
District 9 FTW.

D9 had some of the best special effects I have EVER seen. And the fact that its budget was a mere 30 million is what makes it so deserving of this award. And how it was a simply amazing movie.
juggy4711
juggy4711 - 12/12/2009, 3:37 PM
Star Trek was great and looked cool as hec but...

Again D9 was the best movie of 2009. I hope it gets nominated for much more the effects; at least Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director.

If one were to look back 20 years from now D9 will be the stand out flic not Star Trek, not Watchmen (though I loved them both), and given the unoriginal plot likely not Avatar.

I'm not surprised that The Lovely Bones didn't make it, the movie doesn't come out for a while, so the time limit for This year is probably up for it to be a contender, next year it could be a shoe-in for contention. Sherlock Holmes for best special effects, did I get that right?

I predict that G.I. Joe will do very well at the Razzies this year.

I hope Sommers attends to accept every single award.
