The Phases Of The Marvel's Cinematic Universe

For many years, we fanboys all around have been entertained and amazed by what Marvel Studios has brought to the table. And with the ending of "Phase One" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we now enter the beginning process of "Phase Two" of the MCU and soon enougn we shall also begin "Phase Three". I would like to go back and discuss about Phase One of the MCU and also discuss about the next two Phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Enjoy!

Phase One: The Beginning Stage of Something Big

Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was the beginning stage of the MCU and also the build-up to Marvel's biggest and unprecedented film event, The Avengers. From the beginning of Phase One of the MCU, we've been introduced to a couple of familiar Marvel characters that we've known for many years. Characters like Captain America, Iron-Man, Thor, Hulk, Nick Fury, Hawkeye, and Black Widow. With the individual character films (Iron-Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, etc.) being brought to the big screen and the introduction of well-known Marvel characters, we finally came to the biggest film event in CBM history, The Avengers. Because of the huge success that Marvel's The Avengers has had and the introduction of a certain character, Marvel Studios has now opened a whole new level for its future films.
From Marvel Studios' Iron-Man to The Avengers, we have all seen and been wowed by the extraordinary adventures and thrills of what Marvel Studios can accomplish with a handful of famous and familiar characters. And with Phase One completed and accomplished, we now move on to "Phase Two" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Phase Two: The Effects of 'The Avengers' on the MCU and The Introduction to More Characters

With the ending of Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we now come into the beginning process of "Phase Two". Now, with Phase Two, I would like to say that this Phase would be focusing on the 'aftermath' of The Avengers and its affect on characters like Captain America, Iron-Man, Thor, Hulk, etc. Phase Two might (or will) also bring along the introductions of other long-awaited characters from the Marvel Universe and might also add them to the roster of The Avengers for a sequel to The Avengers. Characters like:

Ms. Marvel

Ant-Man and (possibly) Wasp

The Vision

Black Panther

The Submariner

After a couple of individual character movies, we'll come up to the climax of yet another Avengers flick. And as said, this Avengers film will be more personal, smaller, and painful. So from this we can say that we won't be expecting a certain Mad Titan to be the movie's main antagonist. That will likely happen in the next Phase of the MCU, "Phase Three"...

Phase Three: The Cosmic/Mystical Route and Expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Now, we certainly haven't reached the third Phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe just yet, but we can certainly start speculating on what would be in store for us in this Phase. Now, with the third Phase, I believe that Marvel Studios will take a big step in the MCU and go on the cosmic/mystical route for their future films. Now, we still may get movies like Captain America 3, Thor 3, a S.H.I.E.L.D. film, possibly Iron-Man 4, and so on. But, with this Phase, it'll be cosmic/magic centric and introduce to us characters that are cosmic/mystical power-leveled. Characters like:

Guardians of the Galaxy

Captain Mar-Vell

Nova

The Inhumans

Doctor Strange

Beta Ray Bill

After all of the introduction to these new characters and individual films, we then again come to the climax of this Phase, a threequel of The Avengers. With the third Avengers movie, I can say that we might be expecting Thanos, the Mad Titan, to be the film's main antagonist (seeing as how these cosmic/magic powered-level characters are introduced). Now, I know that there has been talk about the third Avengers movie being a sort of 'Civil War' type movie, but this is just what I think may happen when we begin the process of the third Phase of the MCU.
This will be a big and HUGE step for Marvel Studios to take and bring to us on the silver screen. With this step taken, there can be an endless amount of ideas for crossovers between characters. A Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers team-up, a Doctor Strange and Avengers team-up, and a Beta Ray Bill and Thor team-up etc. As for "Phase Four" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Well, as of right now, I have no clue as to what Marvel Studios will give us. Hopefully, by then, Marvel Studios will finally buy back the film rights to characters like Spider-Man, the X-Men, Daredevil, Electra, and Ghost Rider. Then maybe, just maybe, we may finally see a Marvel 'Civil War' flick, another phenomenal and huge film event. I wouldn't doubt it.

So, that is all for what I think about the "Phases" of the MCU. Sound off in the usual place and let me know what you think. Maybe you might have something totally different in mind about how the "Phases" of the MCU will play out. Thanks for reading and remember, stay EPIC, my friends!

Marvel's Cinematic Universe is gettin' exciting!

Phase One: Avengers Assemble
( Loki )
Phase Two: Superhero Registration
( Ultron )
Phase Three: Civil War
( ? )

Thanos will be the Galactus of the Cosmic Side of things. Those stories can run parallel and unrelated to the Earth-based stories. Guardians Of The Galaxy will be The Cosmic Avengers. Maybe Thanos will cross paths with the Earth-heroes in Phase 4.

@TankD - Yeah, I heard about that. Seriously, Marvel, what a stupid move you made there. >:(

TheAmazingSpidey63 - 6/6/2012, 10:17 PM
@3D - I like what you have there, man. I have thought of the 'Superhero Registration' to be in the second Phase of the MCU, but then I was thinking that Marvel Studios should keep introducing more Marvel characters (including cosmic and mystical characters) and then after getting all of their characters (hopefully they'll get back the rights to other characters they don't have) they can tart with a 'Superhero Registration/Civil War' type movie. And I like the idea of Thanos being the 'Galactus' of the Gaurdians of the Galaxy. :)

@Spidey63

You're right to do that. No doubt Phase Two will be rapid expansion and introduction. But I think the same way Phase One's arc was the Avengers Initiative -- Phase Two's will be Superhero Registration. With Black Panther, Namor, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, and many other films to do -- Phase Two will last for a while and we may (fingers crossed) get X-Men and F4 in and ready for Civil War. Well written article, by the way. This topic always gets me ramblin' on, lol.

@3D - Thanks there, man. This is my first article that I've done and I'm glad I got to complete it today. I'm hoping that this can get on the Main Page so that I can read everyone's thought about this and get a discussion going. And as for the Phase Two of the MCU, I guess we'll have to wait and see if it'll be a sort of 'Superhero Registration' event that'll take place. But I really want Marvel Studios to take it up a notch and definitely bring in new faces to this expanding universe. And, yeah, these types of articles/topics also get me rambling on. :)

@Strider & @RunDTC - Hey, guys. Thanks for commenting and letting me know what you guys think. I can see how you two don't quite want to see Namor coming to the big screen. I myself don't know that much about him, but there's a possibility that we may see him hit the big screen sooner or later. As long as we can bring in more and more characters into the MCU, then the better. :)

TheAmazingSpidey63 - 6/7/2012, 10:40 AM
@lifemodeldecoy - From the looks of it so far, I would say yes. But considering the amount of films that Marvel Studios is planning (even the unnamed films) we might be waiting a lot longer than four years. Maybe like.....six or seven years max. :)

Nice read! I do have to say though, its a little much. Too many characters. Comics aren't like movies. 10+ heroes in the avengers would be horrible on screen.

Also, too many movies! Even 2 movies a year would be pushing it. First of all, movies cost a lot of money and take a lot of time and effort to make, much less get right! Then there's the issue of over-saturation. 2+ Marvel studio films a year in addition to what every other company(WB/DC, Fox, Sony etc.) is releasing. That'll definitely wear down the general audience.

Marvel needs to strike while the iron is hot! I love CBMs, but even I don't want to wait another 4 solo films for the the next Avengers. Maybe IM3 and Thor 2 before Avengers 2, then TIH2 and Cap 2 before Avengers 3.

Save all of those Black Panther, DR Strange, etc. solo films for Marvel is done making solo films for the original team. In anything, introduce new characters as cameos or supporting roles in IM, Cap, Thor and Hulk films a la Black Widow and Hawkeye.
Avengers2012
Avengers2012 - 6/7/2012, 11:29 AM
I think that after Cap 2 in 2014 it's gonna be "Black Panther" even though Marvel is denying it now, they always deny everything. Then in 2015 I think it will be "Ant-Man & Wasp" directed by Edgar Wright. Then another movie, possibly Guardians of the Galaxy. I also think, maybe Vision can get introduced in Ant-Man & Wasp, though this is just a possibly. Then The Avengers 2 in 2016.
Avengers2012
Avengers2012 - 6/7/2012, 11:31 AM
Guardians and Avengers would team up to stop Thanos. Or just Avengers vs Ultron, created in Ant-Man & Wasp but stoped, but not really stoped, they thought they did but didnt.
MoonDoggyX
MoonDoggyX - 6/7/2012, 11:39 AM
...and how is Marvel going to get around the Batman/Black Panther comparison. Visually, the characters are incredibly similar.
Avengers2012
Avengers2012 - 6/7/2012, 12:22 PM
@MoonDoggyX: If he's wearing the cape the whole time then it might be kinda hard. If its like the cartoon wear he doesn't were it that much then it will be fine imo.
Avengers2012
Avengers2012 - 6/7/2012, 12:41 PM
Avengers 2 should be like in 2016. The full team by then imo, should consist of Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Ant-man, Wasp, Black Panther, and possibly(if he's introduced in "Ant-Man & Wasp")Vision. And they should go up vs Thanos or Ultron. Maybe Mandarin and some other villains to? Though I think Thanos/Ultron would be a bigger greater threat for an audience, and to me as well. Oh, and possibly War Machine included in Avengers 2 as well. I feel him and Iron Man working together fighting could be awesome again. Oh and Avengers 2 in order to compensate for so many characters, and story, and action should be like 2hrs and 45-50min.

Wow, you guys. I want to thank all of you for taking your time and reading my article. It really does mean a lot. I'll be making more in the future for all of you to enjoy and to discuss. Again, a HUGE thanks to all of you.

@MoonDoggyX - Hey, dude. I do agree with you that this does seem to be a bit to much (a little too much characters and films), but like I've said, this is just my opinion on how these Phases will all play out in the ever-expanding MCU. It's a 50/50 chance that Marvel Studios will go this way, or Marvel Studios will go another route to bring in more Marvel characters and to expand this incredible Cinematic Universe. I do think, though, that Marvel will at least give us some individual Marvel character films so that they can again give us another Avengers film. And I also wouldn't seeing Marvel Studios giving appearnces/cameos in, let's say, IM3 or CA2 to characters (like Black Panther) so that way they can bring them into the big MCU and then give Black Panther his own movie to star in. :)
TheAmazingSpidey63
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 6/7/2012, 2:34 PM
Also, @MoonDoggyX, I do see where you're getting at with the Black Panther/Batman similarity. Visually, they do quite look the same (besides some minor and/or major looks to their suits), but story-wise and character background-wise, they definitely aren't similar. I hope that they go with this look for BP:

TheAmazingSpidey63 - 6/7/2012, 3:09 PM
@Avengers2012 - I do believe that somewhere around that time Marvel Studios will eventually start production of the Black Panther film. Maybe or maybe not. Hell, he may get an appearance/cameo in either CA2 or IM3. Maybe more CA2. Not too sure. I do believe that this second Phase of the MCU will be quite longer than the first Phase, seeing as how there are rumors that there might be new characters being introduced the MCU and getting their own film. Also, I'm thinking that Ant-Man might, just might, come out somewhere in the year 2014. But, like I said, this second Phase might be longer than its previous Phase. I can't tell you how excited I am to see more and more characters coming in the MCU and more Marvel Studios film coming to us soon. :)

@lifemodeldecoy - Yeah, it does seem pretty crazy when you think about it. The future, man, is unpredictable. Who know what'll happen. :)
TheAmazingSpidey63
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 6/7/2012, 3:33 PM
@Avengers2012 - To reply to your fourth comment, I'm thinking that maybe the next Avengers movie will likely be somewhere in early 2017 or late-ish 2017. Man, it'll be a while 'till we can see another Avengers movie. And as for the roster for the Avengers, I do think we'll get Black Panther, Ms. Marvel, Ant-Man and (possibly) the Wasp, and maybe, just maybe, the Vision. But to take on a huge film like that, with such a large cast of actors and actresses, we'll need a director who can take that challenge and deliver another excellent Avengers film. So, hopefully, Mr. Joss Whedon can come back once more to take on such a film as that. But imagine the budget for that film. Sheeesh! That'll be a large amount of money. Hell, more than The Avengers. Well, here's to wishful thinking. :)

I could definitely live with this line-up you have!

All I know is that Ms. Marvel needs to happen....SOON!
I hope Marvel does her character great justice!

Great read!

@tweeeeenkies3 - Thanks for reading this, man. I really do appreaciate that. And I'm pretty sure that Ms. Marvel will get her long awaited debut film soon enough. And if Marvel Studios follows your outstanding casting and film plot for the Ms. Marvel film, then it'll definitley do Ms. Marvel great justice. Like I said, it's going to be a HUGE step for Marvel Studios to bring in more and more characters in the MCU. The amount of endless ideas for the MCU and its characters will be amazing and Marvel-filled. Again, my friend, thanks for taking your time to read my article. I'll keep a look out for your next article. :)

The article sums it up nicely, just substract Beta Ray Bill, Ant-Man and Wasp and we're good. BRB sucks and Ant-Man's and Wasp's powers suck too. If they change Wasp and Pym's powers then I'm ok with it, but there's no way I will ever be ok with BRB.

It's definitely a great time to be a Marvel fan.

Of the upcoming movies Thor 2 is the one I'm most looking forward to although I will watch them all.

A Dr Stephen Strange novie is something I would particularly like to see.

@Gerrit - Hmm, I do believe that it'll be inevitable for an appearance/cameo from Beta Ray Bill. Seeing as how Marvel has opened up its doors to a whole new level for the possibility of introducing cosmic/mystical characters into the big MCU. Why don't you want to see a Beta Ray Bill appearance/cameo? He's pretty bad@$$, if you ask me. :)
