Amazon has finally released a trailer for its upcoming adaptation of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time, and based on what we see here, fans can expect a (mostly) faithful retelling of the first book in the sprawling fantasy series, The Eye of The World.

The trailer doesn't spend a lot of time laying out the story for the uninitiated, instead giving is the broad strokes of the plot while showcasing the main characters - as well as some pretty damn terrifying-looking creatures!

The Wheel of Time begins with Rosamund Pike's (Gone Girl, Jack Reacher, Die Another Day) powerful Aes Sedai Moiraine Damodred and her protector Lan (Daniel Henney) assembling a group of individuals with the potential to wield a great power, as they embark on a quest to prevent ultimate evil sweeping back into the world.

It's a familiar fantasy premise, of course, but the books do take us to some unexpected places, so hopefully this series will follow suit.

"Wheel of Time is the first fantasy series that really dove into the political and cultural worlds of all these different characters," said showrunner Rafe Judkins in a recent interview. "It was also one of the first to dive into multiple POV characters, so you're following an ensemble, with each of them having their own agendas and approaches to everything. That's always felt to me like the missing piece of the fantasy-literature landscape that hasn't been brought to TV or film yet."

Set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it, the story follows Moiraine, a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.

Any fans of the novels here? Let us know in the usual spot.

The books are pretty good, so hopefully this isn't a dud.

As a fan of the books, this looks pretty good.

Haven't read the books but it looks very promising, perhaps Amazons answer to the popular Netflix series Shadow and Bone with a better cast.

@ARMUS - God Shadow and Bone was a tough watch.

@McMurdo - So naturally Netflix gave it a 2nd season.

Not really happy with the synopsis, while Moiraine is a major part of the books, Rand is the main character, not her.

@soberchimera - I think they are trying to hide that he’s obviously the character that he is. Books started with them being about Rand for the first two before becoming more ensemble by book 3. Maybe trying to be more ensemble from the start?

Feels like the Epic fantasy adaptation is the new Young Adult trope.
Looks mildly interesting, but it has to stand out. So far I only care about Lord of The Rings.

Pike's in this? Then we need niel Patrick Harris. After gone girl those two in anything together will be hilariously awkward.

I've always wanted to read the books. The sheer number is such a turn off. So I'll be checking the show instead. Maybe it'll make me interested enough to pick up the books... per season.

This looks like just another Game Of Thrones style ripoff in my opinion anyways / at least so yeah.

@batman001 - Not at all. It sounds like you haven't read the books. Any similarity to GRRM's work is strictly in the other direction. Wheel was a smashing success years before Martin put pen to paper.

@batman001 - the books are some of the most iconic fantasy out there… it was so popular in the 80s and early 90s that a lot of fantasy was ripping IT off.

@batman001 - Game of Thrones just isn’t all that special after the last couple seasons. There will be loads of fantasy shows that put that show to rest. LotR Second Age show will bury thrones based solely on the content they will be covering alone. Child sacrifices, confirmed set pieces involving concentration camps for elves whom Melkor construes into the orcs. It’s going to be dark because it’s a very dark time when Sauron in fair elvish form is able to corrupt the King of Numenor

As a huge fan of the series, this looks….fine.

Looks closer to Shadow and Bone then something like Game of Thrones. Looks cheaper and young adult….which is a shame because it’s not a young adult series and deserves a budget to do the massive world justice.

We will se how it turns out.
