DUNE Is Now Closing In On $80 Million At The International Box Office

Denis Villeneuve's Dune has been playing in several overseas locations for almost two weeks, and the sci-fi adaptation is now closing in on $80 million. Will it perform as well when it hits US theaters?

Dune is not set to open in the US and several other major territories until October 22, but Denis Villeneuve's highly-anticipated sci-fi adaptation began its international rollout over a week ago, and the movie has been performing very well since.

The sci-fi epic added another $26.3M this weekend from 32 markets to bring its offshore total to $76.5M, experiencing an impressive 32% drop since its release. Dune is expected to hold its position for a while, but it will face stiff competition from Venom: Let There Be Carnage and No Time To Die in the coming weeks.

This is obviously a terrific start, but there's still a lot of uncertainly surrounding the movie's domestic bow, especially as it'll be available to stream on HBO Max the same day it hits theaters. Still, at this rate, the chances of Villeneuve getting the chance to make Part II seem pretty strong.

In related BO news, Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has held on to the No. 1 spot for the fourth week in a row, and is now officially the highest domestic grosser of the year. It's global total now sits at $363.4M.

Do you guys plan on seeing Dune on the big screen? Let us know in the comments.

Hopefully they do the second half and maybe some of the sequels

@dracula - I read somewhere that Villeneuve wants to do a trilogy, where first two parts cover Dune and the third one will adapt Dune Messiah.

@Odin - if thats all he wants to do, wonder who they would get if they decide to do more of the novels, Nolan

@Odin - that would make for a good trilogy. Wouldn't mind them also doing Children of Dune, but I'm not sure if I'm ready for a half worm half human after that

@Reeds2Much - right so I got me a 10 foot charger cord at a gas station so I can plug it in at the sink counter and be in the toilet room (big fancy bathroom, so downsizing to a small apartment hurt my feelings but that’s divorce for ya) and then that sucker quit working. My son said it shocked him when he passed by it. Sucks cuz it was awesome

Is the books even worth reading ? I enjoyed the original movie and the sci fi mini series.

@blitzkreg - People that like the book and the genre will say yes, people that don't will say no. Go to the library or a book store and read the first chapter and choose from there.

@blitzkreg - it’s in the vain of The Lord of the Rings. If you can get into the writing style then you are in for a masterpiece of the genre. If not, you’ll have a hard time enjoying it but hopefully will be able to appreciate it in another medium like film.

So if Dune does well overall while still being available day and date on Max what does that mean for TSS? Because all I heard was how Max was the only reason TSS did so poorly.

Just a thought.

@LongMayHeReign - Probably no change at all, the film came out during the pandemic.
I suspect all WB releases that premiered on HBO Max that COULD recieve sequels will do so by default.

Wonder Woman 3, Mortal Kombat 2, Dune: Part 2 and Suicide Squad 3 are all probably going to come out when theatres are back up to prove the true sustainability of these franchises (plus Warner would not leave the franchise that made Harley Quinn so big to end on part 2)

@Blergh - I'm not talking about WB, I'm talking about everyone on here who went out of their way to blame everything and everyone except that it just didn't connect with the GA.

Everyone was extremely defensive over TSS for reasons which I do not know.

“ Everyone was extremely defensive over TSS for reasons which I do not know.”

Really? I think everyone knows why TSS didn’t do well and I don’t remember many people defending or not understanding why it wasn’t a success. And TSS opened internationally the same time it did domestically so this isn’t the same release strategy as Dune.
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 9/26/2021, 2:49 PM
@regularmovieguy - So Dune will make more internationally because it is being released abroad first?

@LongMayHeReign

I’m not sure why you’re playing stupid right now but there are a lot of reasons why Dune will perform better than TSS.

@regularmovieguy - First of all I'm not playing stupid so we can cut that shit out right now. Second other than being a better film that connects with the GA what are the reason why Dune may outperform TSS?
regularmovieguy
regularmovieguy - 9/26/2021, 3:52 PM
@LongMayHeReign

I feel like you are…and if you watched TSS you’d probably understand why it wouldn’t appeal to everyone and their moms. But here are also a couple more reasons why Dune is going to do a lot better than TSS:

1.) TSS is an R-rated dark comedy that didn’t have Batman or any notable iconic superheroes outside of Harley Quinn/Margot Robbie. Dune is PG-13 and had its premiere at several high profile film festivals. There is Oscar buzz.

2.)TSS didn’t do horribly internationally. It bombed domestically. Dune has an advantage here internationally because it’s debuting before it’s day and date on HBO MAX.

3.) Dune is also getting a China release. And may be one of the bigger performers internationally all year because of that.
LameLuka
LameLuka - 9/26/2021, 5:11 PM
@LongMayHeReign - lack of interest overall. The first Dune trailer had more views than all 3 TSS trailers combined. Same with Matrix 4. No one cared for TSS, plain and simple.
LameLuka
LameLuka - 9/26/2021, 5:13 PM
@regularmovieguy - TSS was a flop both domestic and internationally. By next week Dune is going to eclips TSS entire international total.

@regularmovieguy - "if you watched TSS you’d probably understand why it wouldn’t appeal to everyone and their moms."

First of all I did.

Second of all this is literally my point, all I kept seeing was people putting 100% of the blame on Max when it's pretty obvious that there were many factors involved in why it struggled.

If you're going to try and talk crazy to me at least understand the discussion at hand.

@LameLuka -

This is exactly my point, but apparently some people lack reading comprehension.

@LongMayHeReign

“but apparently some people lack reading comprehension.”

LameLuka’s right but you didn’t say that anywhere in your posts. I didn’t mention that the movie just really didn’t inspire much interest despite being received well.

There were a million reasons TSS flopped.

Blergh
Blergh - 9/26/2021, 1:49 PM
@grif - it's really, really good. The story has been adapted really well, the visuals are fantastic and the score is amazing. Only thing I personally felt was missing was Villneuves odd camera techniques (but I assume these were kept to a minimum not to tamper the story).

Now, if part 2 comes out, I suggest you watch both movies in a double feautre as the ending is pretty aprupt
