To celebrate the 35th anniversary of its June 4, 1982 release, "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" will hit theaters September 10th and 13th. The event will feature an introduction from William Shatner who portrayed Captain James Kirk in the original series. Largely regarded as one of the best big screen Star Trek stories, Wrath of Khan featured the crew of the fictional starship Enterprise taking on the genetically enhanced superhuman Khan Noonien Singh as he sought to exact revenge on Kirk for stranding him on a planet, a prequel story that aired in the original TV series. Directed by Nicholas Meyer the event will feature a digitally remastered Director’s Cut version of the film.

Created by Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek debuted in 1966 and aired for three seasons on NBC. It spawned five TV live action series, one animated show, and thirteen feature films. A new series - Star Trek Discovery - is currently set to air on CBS All Access. The Wrath of Khan, was the second feature film to be released and greatly influenced popular culture as it brought about the apparent demise of one of the series most beloved characters, Mr. Spock portrayed by Leonard Nimoy. Many of the same themes and characters greatly influenced the subsequent film, Star Trek Into Darkness which saw the principle characters from the series again confronting Khan with a new cast. The Wrath of Khan won two Saturn Awards in 1982, for best actor (William Shatner) and best director (Nicholas Meyer). The film was also nominated for a 1983 Hugo Award in the "best dramatic presentation" category.

The film will be released by Fathom Events.

The new movies are good but damn I love the originals! Wrath of Khan is such a great movie and worth this theater release. Too bad I'm stationed in Germany otherwise I'd be there!

@chewie - I thought the first film in the new versions were good, but they have gone south with each subsequent film.

@Forthas - I can agree with that

This is definitely a controversial opinion but i found this movie incredibly boring and bland for the reputation that it has. Granted i largely feel that way about the series as a whole until the first Abrams film (which made me love the series) but i really dont get the love of khan as hes portrayed before Into Darkness. I think the kernel of the characters, their relationships, and the lore behind the world but until the 2009 reboot i honestly never liked Trek except the Enterprise series which ii only saw a few episodes of

@Ha1frican - i saw reruns of the original Star Trek in the 80s here in Brazil. I loved how different were the episodes from each other, different writers brought different challenges. The episode "The Seed" was one of those surprising episodes, and actor Ricardo Montalban brought a charming and subtly menacing presence in which is regarded as one of the best episodes of the series. The movie was a proper sequel to that, and Khan was a sympathetic villain. I was able to catch up with the movies much later on VHS. What i want to say is, before the internet we had time to flavor the episodes and enjoy them.

@VictorHugo - interesting. I think I didnt like the tv series bc my grandparents loved it and they forced me to watch it all the time

@Ha1frican - since they forced you to watch it, maybe this why you don´t like it. In the 80´s we had reruns from several 1960s series, like "Voyage at the Bottom of the Sea" "Batman" and "Land of Giants". So, with this whole environment of series as comparison, one could see Star Trek was slightly above the rest. Of course you can´t quickly compare a cheap TV episode to a modern movie in special effects with high budget without some reference.

When they say digitally remastered do they mean the special effects will be enhanced? I like the movie, but I remember seeing it on tv awhile ago for the first time in a long time, and noticed how the phaser blasts looked like a cartoon, which they probably were, since there was no cgi back then.

@gremlin22 - That is a good question. I was watching a Star Trek marathon and noticed they changed the special effects. Not sure about the film.

Shatner won a Saturn Award?

I saw this in the theater on its original release and I'll see it again. Despite the grief Shatner often gets as an a actor, he turned in a great performance. The only thing that got me was the focus on Kirk's age. While it did make a great plot point and underlined one of the major themes of the movie, he was probably just the right age to be a starship captain.
