LOGAN Director James Mangold Set To Write & Direct BOBA FETT: A STAR WARS STORY
Breaking news out of Lucasfilm as it's being reported that Academy Award-nominated director James Mangold (Logan) has been tapped to write an upcoming Star Wars spinoff film about Boba Fett!
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Walt Disney Studios and Lucasfilm have enlisted Academy Award-nominated director James Mangold to write and direct their long-rumored Boba Fett standalone film, which will be the latest entry in their Star Wars anthology series
UPDATE: X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will co-write the script with Mangold and will also serve as a producer.
Further plot details are being kept under lock-and-key for now, but it will presumably follow the feared bounty hunter in his younger days long before he encountered Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and fell into the Pit of Carkoon.
The studios are simultaneously developing films based on a number of their most popular supporting characters, including Lando Calrissian and Obi-Wan Kenobi, whose film has been heavily rumored to begin production in Spring 2019. If the Kenobi spinoff does end up opening in 2020, then it seems probable that Boba Fett will debut sometime in 2022, that is, if the studios stick to their every other year schedule for the anthology films.
Mangold is, of course, best known for helming 2013's The Wolverine and last year's Logan, which also served as Hugh Jackman's X-Men swan song. His past credits also include Walk The Line, Knight and Day, 3:10 to Yuma, Kate & Leopold; Girl, Interrupted; Cop Land; and Heavy. Mangold is currently prepping a Ford vs. Ferrari drama for 20th Century Fox, which is expected to begin production this fall with Academy Award-winners Matt Damon (Jason Bourne) and Christian Bale (The Dark Knight) starring in the lead roles.
