Rian Johnson Weighs In On How [SPOILER]'s Story Wraps Up In STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a movie packed full of big twists and turns but perhaps the biggest is the demise of Luke Skywalker after he uses the full might of his powers to defeat Kylo Ren and inspire a new generation of Rebels. During a recent Q&A, director Rian Johnson was asked about his decision to kill the character off and it probably won't surprise you to learn that it wasn't exactly easy for him.

"I had huge hesitance. I was terrified. It was a growing sense of dread when I realized this was going to make sense in that chapter." As for why he feels Luke's death is justified, he adds: "I think the hero’s journey of Luke Skywalker concluded in Return
of the Jedi. This is the hero’s journey of Rey, and Finn, and Poe. The [ongoing] story of Luke is one that has to play in tandem with that of Rey."

Of course, death isn't necessarily permanent in the Star Wars Universe and it's feasible that Luke will return as a Force Ghost based on how things wrapped up between him and Kylo Ren. Asked about the possibility of returning for Episode IX, Mark Hamill said: "I’m just still holding on to the line, ‘See you around, kid.’ I can be in Episode Nine! I might consider catering the film just so I can hang out."

How did you guys feel about Luke's demise in Star Wars: The Last Jedi? Let us know in the usual place.

JJ Abrams gets backlash for TFA being too similar to the original trilogy. Rian Johnson gets backlash for TLJ being too much of a departure from the original trilogy.

Disney just can't win with the die-hard fans lol.

@xAdam - That's just it xAdam - many didn't think it sucked. I loved it. You hated it, and many agree with each of us. This is proving to be quite divisive.

@Spodermug - "being too much of a departure from the original trilogy"

Not really. Fans don't understand Luke complete regression (and not developpement) as a character among a LOT of things (the movie is really flawed). But it's a matter of point of view I guess so a debate is useless. Glad you like the movie it's the most important.

@Indoorsman - It has the lowest RT score of any Star Wars movie, including the prequels. Many people agree with me, just as they agree with you. The only difference is that my reasoning holds up whereas yours doesn't. I've had countless discussions about it in which the side opposing mine just gives up, so please if you're up to the task, go ahead.

@Spodermug - No reason to bring back original trilogy characters and do them like this. Disney is all about the money grab. These new Star Wars movies are not good and will not hold up like the original trilogy

@xAdam - I liked the movie, as did many others. I think it's pretty good. I also think some of the criticism levelled at Johnson has been unfair. I could just as easily call you an 'idiot' for suggesting that the movie sucks and the criticism is warranted.

@Spodermug - What is your reasoning behind being able to call me an idiot? The only reasoning people who like the movie have been able to conjure up is

- It's original (yeah, like that's commendable. It's not. You can say a movie's bad because it's a rehash but you can't give it points for not being one).

- Poe's a better character (sure).

- New force abilities (even though they take a [frick] ton of effort so we'll probably never see them again).

- ...

@xAdam - What task? Convincing you that you're wrong? What would I have to gain? Besides, neither one of us is wrong. These are opinions. I don't like cauliflower. If someone tells me they love cauliflower, that doesn't make them wrong. We just feel differently about it.

@Indoorsman - Tell me why, in your opinion, the movie is good. If you can successfully do that without me refuting your points. You win. That's the task. I said "the movie is no different to how it began, other than Luke being dead an Poe being a better character" in a different thread and someone listed things opposing me like "Kylo's unhinged, him and Rey have a connection" etc. even though Kylo and Rey have always had a connection and he's always been unhinged.

@xAdam - What is your reasoning behind implying that I was an idiot in your first comment, simply for defending the filmmakers?

I liked the movie and I'll defend the decisions made. Does that make me an idiot? No.

You didn't like the movie and you criticised it. Does that make you an idiot? No.

@Spodermug - Because "JJ Abrams gets backlash for TFA being too similar to the original trilogy. Rian Johnson gets backlash for TLJ being too much of a departure from the original trilogy.

Disney just can't win with the die-hard fans lol."

makes legitimately no sense, takes a second of thought: what my initial comment says to refute it and yet is still being passed around by people like you as a legitimate criticism of the people who think the movie was bad.

@xAdam - it’s time for you to shut the [frick] up. You cannot refute another person’s subjective experience. It clicked for them, it didn’t for you. Don’t ever try to convince people that they are wrong for liking for a film.

@TheMaster2011 - "it’s time for you to shut the [frick] up" well you're nice aren't you. I'm giving reasons why the movie was bad, nobody who liked it seems willing to give me reasons why it was good.

Hey, mate. Time to shut the [frick] up. :)
Indoorsman
Indoorsman - 12/17/2017, 5:12 AM
@xAdam - Because it's pointless. You'll never convince me it was bad, just as I'll never convince you it was good. The movie has been out for four days, and you say you've had 'countless discussions' about it. Go outside. Go for a walk. Get laid. There is more to life.
Jezi
Jezi - 12/17/2017, 5:17 AM
@Indoorsman - I'm not trying to convince you that it's bad. I just want to know the reasoning behind why you think it's a good movie. You ask someone like me why they didn't like the movie and you'll get answers, I ask someone like you and you'll just shrivel up, stop replying and write me off as invalid.

@xAdam - Short version? I thought it was exciting, emotional, gorgeous to look at, and engaging throughout.

@Indoorsman - I don't want the short version. I want you to back up why you thought it was emotional and exciting, etc. with valid reasoning.
