STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Novelist Alan Dean Foster Was Forced To Cut Rey/Finn Romance Hints

Many Star Wars fans were disappointed with how things played out between Rey and Finn in the sequel trilogy, and novelist Alan Dean Foster reveals Lucasfilm forced him to cut any hints of a romance...

Acclaimed novelist Alan Dean Foster is currently in the midst of a royalties battle with Disney over the work he did for Lucasfilm prior to the merger, and he's not shying away from sharing some big Star Wars secrets.

In 2015's The Force Awakens, Rey and Finn were introduced, but things didn't play out for the characters as many fans expected and hoped they would.

John Boyega has been vocal when it comes to sharing his disappointment about Finn being marketed as a Jedi, only to end up being slotted into a supporting role. Many moviegoers, meanwhile, were left underwhelmed by Lucasfilm's failure to deepen the relationship between the two heroes.

According to Foster, there was a scene in his novelization which featured a direct hint about a future romance. He expected to see it addressed in The Last Jedi instead, but that never happened.

"There were a couple of things in there, and a couple of things that happened subsequently that bothered me," he explained. "I'm going to tell you one thing they made me take out because enough time has passed, I don't think it matters. There was obviously the beginnings of a relationship between John Boyega's character and Daisy Ridley's character. I expected to see that developed further in Episode VIII [The Last Jedi], and zero happened with it."

As the years passed, many fans hoped for a romance between Finn and Poe Dameron, but that also never became a reality. The Star Wars sequels were full of missed opportunities, and with no firm plan in place heading into this trilogy, it's no wonder they suffered from a lack of cohesiveness.

They couldn't decide between Poe or Rey for him, that's how well thought out this trilogy was. Retcon all this shit

@bobevanz - If they didn’t retcon the prequels, they’re not retconning the sequels.

@repulse93 - It's no that cut and dry. With prequels, the same basic story would've still be there. We know just from the original trilogy that these certain events and characters were part of the story. Obi-Wan, Anakin, Yoda, Palpatine, the events like Clone Wars, Anakin falling to the dark side and becoming Vader, Obi-Wan training Anakin and Palaptine corrupting him or the fall of the republic and rise of the empire. The over all story couldn't be changed just by retconing the prequel movies.

The sequels on the other hand, have nothing in them that would be undoubtedly happening anyway after the original trilogy. One the big problems that people have had with sequels is that the events in them are illogical as a follow-up and are actually much downplaying the significance of some the most important events in previous films. All the main characters in the sequels are also by no means foreshadowed in the previous films or presented in a way that they would seem to be filling some natural role in the story. Again, many fans have actually had the issue that the new characters in the sequels feel artificial or downright pointless. All of these issues are even highlighted by the fact that there use to be a completely different kinda of a follow-up saga to the original trilogy.

So, trying to retcon prequels would be pointless effort, while retconning the sequels would work without a any problems to other parts of the saga (and has technically been done once already). That, I guess, is the what I was trying to say by this messy rant of a comment.

@bobevanz - I'm with you man, act like it was a DC Elseworlds or Marvel What If. SO so so disappointed in the sequels. I felt John Boyega too, not only did they fail at development of his character, they made him look like a sucker who couldn't even beat a storm trooper when he had a light saber. SMH, yea retcon all that crap.

@bobevanz - Finn gets a new love interest every movie. It was a complete lack of planning

@Dafoe - I meant when all pre-disney purchase expanded universe stuff (novels, comics etc.) got de-canonized by Disney so that they were able to make the sequels from scrap. I believe that stuff is nowadays know as Star Wars legends continuity.

Lucasfilm executive: Shall we pair up the black guy with the white woman or the latino?
Kathleen Kennedy: Ew, neither, are you crazy? We'll figure it out.

Finn should've been force sensitive from the get go. A traumatized, force sensitive ex-stormtrooper, that is a franchise alone right there. But no, he went the way of Sam Witwicky, relegated to just scream the name of the main hero every once in a while.
All these characters had potential, Finn, Poe, Rey, Kylo gets by on Driver alone and even then there was still so much there. Oh well, what is done is done I guess.

Their Chemistry was really great... I really thought we will get more scenes of both in the Sequel and what did we got? Finn and Rose...

Well... F it... the sequels cannon, but in my heart they aren't.
Too quote Kylo:

Finn should have been the most interesting character in the sequels, but oh well.... for me Finn went downhill the moment he fought a random trooper (Traiter Guy) as at that point I knew they had no idea what to do about Finn as a random guy is shouting something like we are meant to care

Still to this day can't believe they actually embraced the Reylo stuff in TROS. TLJ pretty much cuts that stuff off completely and they immediately pivoted back to it for zero dramatic payoff

Not surprised at all. Can’t have Rey with the black man. Get her with the murderer instead.
