Chances are you'll have seen this already if you caught Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in theaters, but Disney/20th Century Studios has now officially released the first teaser trailer for James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water online.

This teaser doesn't really delve into the story in any significant way, but it does feature stunning footage of the long-awaited sequel, as returning heroes Jake Sully, (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) do everything they can to ensure their family's safety.

Exactly what threat the Na'vi are facing this time is unclear, but we do know that The Way of Water will be set over 10 years after the events of the first film, and it looks like some new human interlopers have arrived on Pandora.

Check out the trailer below along with a new poster, and let us know what you think.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure. Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the film stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement and Kate Winslet.

Avatar: The Way of Water is set to hit theaters on December 16th, 2022.

As great as this looks (and it does), I'm not falling for the whole 3D gimmick again.

@DrReedRichards - Yeah, same here. I'm waiting for reviews and reactions.

1st one is such a drag.

Now, sure it is. Back then, it was marketed as a phenomenon. And we all sure as hell ate the whole thing with awe and whatnot.

I know I sure did.

Let me rephrase:
"As great as this looks (and it does), I'm not paying more than I have to."

@DrReedRichards - See, the 3D was great. I use to say it was the best 3D movie i ever saw, technically-wise.

But the story sucks, simple as that. Not trying to be edgy or anything here, I thought it back then and still do.

@Fogs -

If I wanted to watch a dumb movie just for the gimmick, I'd watch TENET again.

Not much here besides the visuals. They do look good but nothing to get pumped about.

Even when the original came out in 2009, I thought it was just okay. The only reason I’m not writing this off is because it’s from James Cameron, the king of Blockbuster sequels.

The new 3D technology needs to be completely groundbreaking because in 2D, this looks and feels soulless and 10 years too late.

Looks decent, would like to see more hints of the main conflict however.

People hate on the first movie as if it murdered their family or something, so weird, James Cameron directed two of the best sequels of all time, lets not forget

@manofillintent1 -

Did you already forget the summer of '19, when people were rooting for it to remain insurpassible? Despite already having had 3 re-releases (soon to be 4)?

People will root what they root for, each for our own reasons. It's not that hard.

@manofillintent1 - Yeah, but he was working with movies that were already masterpieces of their genres as the foundation of said sequels. Here, he has lesser material to work with.

Also, Ridley Scott directed both arguably the best Alien movie and also the worst one. Some of the masters of the previous filmmaking generations aren’t what they used to be.
manofillintent1
manofillintent1 - 5/9/2022, 2:32 PM
@Fogs - well you say that but he’s only directed 8 feature films in a long career, all of which have been hits with the exception of his debut piranha 2 but gotta start somewhere right

manofillintent1
manofillintent1 - 5/9/2022, 2:56 PM
@DrReedRichards - yeah but the first film in particular I find gets an unusual amount of hate, something with no built in fan base like Star Wars or marvel or whatever.

DrReedRichards - 5/9/2022, 2:59 PM
@manofillintent1 -

Success breeds contempt. And immense success, especially of that caliber, is bound to seem undeserved to some. Not quite inexcusably, but still not entirely justified either.
