Now, I just want everyone to know that I did enjoy the movie. I thought that it had amazing effects and that the scope was incredible. But, as I go through it in my mind over and over, I realize that's really the only reason why this film got so much praise: the scope.

I mean, come on. There are a lot of problems here. The story is so unoriginal and this is some of the worst dialogue that I've ever heard. Every line that Stephen Lang and Michelle Rodriguez say makes me cringe. And some of the acting is really bad. Mostly from the two I just mentioned and also from Giovanni Ribisi. And the story is Dances With Wolves, except in space. And that's not a far stretch, people.

Now, of course, everyone knows that this was directed by James Cameron. Personally, I think that's why the movie made so much money. James Cameron is the one who brought us Terminators 1 and 2 and Titanic. And every TV spot for this movie bombarded you with those movies. That caused people to go "Well, I really liked those movies, so this one should be just as good".

Now, I may sound like the dick that is jealous because James Cameron has more money than God. I'm criticizing the movie more then I wanted to. I did enjoy it, like I said. The effects are incredible and the 3D was amazing. Some of the acting was very good as well, especially from Zoe Saldana. And the actions scenes were great as well. But, there is just so much from other films in this and the dialogue really dropped it for me. But, then again, this is just my own opinion.

So, answer me this: Did Avatar Really Deserve All the Praise? Tell me what you think in the comments below. ;)

As I watched Avatar my jaw dropped as beautiful scene after scene unfolded. Like Jake I wanted to stay on Pandora and the human world seemed less exciting by comparison. I think we will be talking about this movie for a long time. A new standard has been set for movie spectacles.

no, it wasnt worth all the hype. when you start a trailer that says "from the director that brought you titanic" boom theres a bunch of viewers already, people look and go, hey, titantic made an ass-ton of money, so this movie will be great. then people saw it and were like "oh hey, ive seen this before, but its just a futuristic version" they spread the word and then it blows up into something like a new twiilight movie coming out. i thought the hype was for nothing, and when i actually watched the movie, i was kind of angry with how "unoriginal" the movie really was. then i hear the news of avatar 2, which made me even more upset, and it will probably double the money, all for nothing, so no, i felt the hype was for nothing

I definitely agree with you on this one. Take away the effecta and what are you left with. Visually it was unparalleld last year. A best pictre nomination? GTFO. Surprisingly, my favorite movie of 2009 was Star Trek. Haven't seen Hurt Locker, but Star Trek, Invictus, and District 9 all deserved best picture more than Avatar.

Minotauro@ Just because a bunch of suckers bought into all the hype and it sold lots of tickets (not to mention inflated ticket prices due to many watching in 3D) does not make their argument invalid. I don't think anyone is going to argue that the movie was visually stunning. The rest of it was below average.

Intelligent people don't just go by ticket sales to determine if a movie is good or not. They know how to break down the components of a movie. All of us are acknowledging that the visual component was outstanding. Please explain how you can stand by a regurgitated storyline that has been seen over and over again in a number of movies. A movie isn't made up of visuals alone.
