Recently Hunger Games director Gary Ross shocked many by walking away from the lucrative franchise. Once he was out of the picture Lionsgate wasted little time putting together an impressive list of replacements for Ross. After a fairly quick search The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Lionsgate have decided that Francis Lawrence is the right man to takeover directing duties for the sequel, Catching Fire.

Sources say that Lawrence will receive an official offer this afternoon. If he accepts and a deal can be worked out, he will replace Gary Ross, who directed the first installment of the hugely successful franchise.

Lawrence is best known to moviegoers as the director of Will Smith's film, I Am Legend, or the under-appreciated Constantine. This isn't quite a surprise as many insiders had determined that the job came down to only two contenders, Lawrence, and MoneyBball director Bennett Miller.

The Hunger Games hits theaters on March 23rd, 2012. The film stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Wes Bentley, Toby Jones, Alexander Ludwig, Isabelle Fuhrman, Amandla Stenberg, Stanley Tucci, and Donald Sutherland

@RorMachine

Christ, Duncan Jones was in the running?? Never realized that. Dude's great. Any of those choices would have been better. Damn shame.

Do you think the budget will allow for a tripod this time?

"This movie is doomed."

Ror. You clearly haven't seen the records this film has been breaking. It doesn't matter who directs Catching Fire. It will make money. The question is whether it will work as much as The Hunger Games. Whether it will be a good film is more important.

This wouldn't be a very good move on their part, Joe Cornish or Duncan Jones would be good.

The Hunger Games has become so big Woody Allen could direct the next one and it would break records.

The first one was an overhyped shitfest...someone like Alfonso cuaron could make it watchable just like he did with harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban. Alternatively Just hire the guy that done the running man at least he's heard of a tripod.

Why? Could have gone with two better choices and choose this guy "I am Legend" really wasn't that bad but haven't seen "Water for Elephants" and Constantine was meh for me.
