MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS Opening Scene Features The Return Of A KONG: SKULL ISLAND Character

The three-minute opening scene from Apple TV+'s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has been released online ahead of the MonsterVerse spin-off's premiere on November 17.

The exciting sequence features the return of John Goodman as Bill Randa, as he narrowly escapes being devoured by a giant spider-like Titan known as a Mother Longlegs. Of course, if you've seen Kong: Skull Island, you'll know that ol' Bill isn't quite so lucky later on when he runs into a juvenile Skull-Crawler!

A younger take on Randa (Anders Holm) will play a prominent role in the series, as he's involved with discovering the existence of the Titans and the formation of Monarch. He'll be joined by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell (who play the same character across two different timelines), Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Mari Yamamoto, and Ren Watabe. Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski also star.

In addition, we have some new promo images for the series, and they give us another look at Godzilla, along with the Mother Longlegs, Mantleclaw, and the Endoswarmers, who show up in the first episode. Other Titans do also appear, but we don't want to ruin the surprise!

Check out the clip and stills at the links below.

Legacy of Monsters is set after the events of 2014's Godzilla reboot, as San Francisco struggles to rebuild in the wake of the Titan's epic battle against the MUTOs. According to an updated synopsis from TV guide, the story "will focus on Cate, who survives the San Francisco showdown and travels to Japan to find her missing father. It is there she learns of a shocking betrayal, and Cate must team up with her half-brother and an American hacker to discover her family's ties with the mysterious organization known as Monarch."

Chris Black (Severance) and Matt Fraction (Hawkeye) developed the project, and the first two episodes were helmed by WandaVision and Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman.

"Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real," reads the synopsis for the 10-episode series, "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch." "Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga - spanning three generations - reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives."

Was this on an earlier trip to Skull Island or when he was there in Kong: Skull Island? Cause I don't remember him being away from the rest of the team for a scene like this.

@JobinJ - I assumed it was just supposed to have happened during the movie at some point.

@JobinJ - the only reason they killed him off was because they couldn't get the actor to do running scenes. even in this it's clearly faked.

@DocSpock - A lot of people don't have Disney Plus, either. You can just pay for it if you want it, like any other streaming service.

@ClintThaHamster -

It's a little different. D+ is available on any smart TV. Not so with Apple. I have a perfectly good 75 inch android TV that I can't get it on. If my TV were 2 years newer, I could.

I could get Apple TV on my iphone, but I will never watch TV/movies on my phone.

@DocSpock - Ah, I see. I have Apple TV hardware, so I wasn't aware it wasn't available on other smart devices. That blows.

Yeah, over the last 3-4 years allTVs now have the stuff to make it work. My TV is 6 years old.

@DocSpock - Man, it sure sucks when they end support for Smart TVs. I was working in the consumer electronics sector when everything started going "smart" a few years back. Seemed like the stupidest shit in the world at the time, but now no one would blink at a "Smart Coffee Maker" or an "App-Supported Toaster" or whatever.

@MotherGooseUPus - Yeah man and I’m going through Foundation right now, which is a super cool scifi series. Apple is up there with HBO with their stuff feeling more cinematic than TV-like.

Why put a spoiler warning? The first trailer showed John Goodman is returning.

I have to hand it to Legendary...they do a good job of connecting the various films and now TV shows. I hope they use the show to introduce a larger menace for the main monsters to fight. I beleive the Cthulhu is in the public domain. Not sure why they don't make it the next big bad. Have it fight Mecha-Godzilla and Ghidora together and wipe the floor with them. THEN we are set up for a huge Monster Smackdown!

bkmeijer1 - 11/5/2023, 4:58 PM
@Forthas - honestly, Godzilla & Kong smacking the shit out of Cthulhu would be great to see. I'd pay for.

I also wouldn't mind it if Legendary also folds Pacific Rim into the franchise. The second movie ended with the Yeager's going after Kaiju, and I could see them follow one through the breach into the MonsterVerse.
Forthas
Forthas - 11/5/2023, 6:42 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I would imagine that the Yeager's would work alongside the Monsters so they would need to get a big bad that threatens all of them. I guess using a Cthulhu, they could make it as powerful as they want.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/6/2023, 2:22 AM
@Forthas - that would be amazing to see imo. And if Cthulhu needs back-up, maybe they can throw in the Cloverfield monster in as well (I know it's Paramount, but it is a Kaiju)
Forthas
Forthas - 11/6/2023, 7:58 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I am not sure if the Cloverfield monster is on the scale of Godzilla size wise...
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/6/2023, 11:16 AM
@Forthas - I don't really remember the size to be honest, but the one at the end of Cloverfield Paradox (the same as Cloverfield? I don't know) definitely seemed huge

My money's on Cthulu.

@ClintThaHamster - that's why they need a Jaeger from Pacific Rim as back-up

OT: The Marvels previews are now estimated to be around $5.35m. For comparison Morbius had previews of $5.7m

Put bluntly, The Marvels is likely going to perform worse than Morbius.

@Scarilian - I don't follow box office. Is it tracking to be the worst mcu film sales wise?
Scarilian

@Vigor -
"Is it tracking to be the worst mcu film sales wise?"

Unadjusted for inflation The Incredible Hulk is the lowest grossing film in the MCU and made $265m.

Comparatively, The Marvels is tracking similar to Morbius which made $167.5m

Unless the international audience turn up for this, The Marvels could easily wind up being the lowest grossing movie of the entire MCU.

If we adjust the prior films for inflation, then The Marvels will definitely will be the lowest.

I feel it needed to happen at this time for them to hopefully learn the right lesson.

Unfortunately they think the problem is that things aren't 'gritty' enough and intend to fix it just by making higher age rated content such as Deadpool 3, Echo, Daredevil, Blade, etc...
Vigor
Vigor - 11/6/2023, 4:19 PM
@Scarilian - idk. I think their reaction is to be sager (reports of going bCk to og 6 avengers) rather than wacky and out there like Thor 4, antman 3, and the marvels. I feel they can find a fine balance with the right script and oversight

I do get that it doesn’t have as wide of reach as other streaming platforms, but dang are they really coming out with some top notch content.
