A few months ago at SDCC, Legendary surprised us all when they announced plans for a King Kong spin-off movie called Skull Island, and even screened a brief teaser. Back then they claimed that it wasn't going to be prequel to Peter Jackson's movie, but in the official press release below they definitely make it clear that it will be an origin tale for the great ape. Not only that, but they've signed a director in Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Sundance hit Kings Of Summer) and Loki himself, Tom Hiddleston, as a leading man. Have a read of the press release in full for yourselves.

Legendary announced its plans to make a feature film based on the cinematic origins of King Kong during this year's San Diego Comic Con with an original draft of the script by Max Borenstein. Previous works have touched on the island, but staying on and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions. Universal Pictures will distribute the film on November 4, 2016.

Vogt-Roberts directed and executive produced the Sundance darling THE KINGS OF SUMMER. He has also directed the pilot and multiple episodes of FX's new series "You're the Worst" and is set to direct METAL GEAR SOLID for Sony. His other credits include directing the pilot of "Cocked" for Amazon Studios and directing and executive producing the concert documentary NICK OFFERMAN: AMERICAN HAM. He is represented by UTA, 3 Arts Entertainment and attorneys Alan Wertheimer and Andy Gawker.

Hiddleston's credits include MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE, and WAR HORSE. He is also known for portraying Thor's nemesis and brother, Loki, in Marvel's THOR, THOR: THE DARK WORLD, and THE AVENGERS. Upcoming projects include Legendary's gothic horror CRIMSON PEAK from director Guillermo del Toro, Ben Wheatley's adaptation of J.G. Ballard's HIGH-RISE and Marc Abraham's Hank Williams biopic I SAW THE LIGHT. He is repped by William Morris Endeavor, Hamilton Hodell and Authentic Management.

Legendary's recent releases include GODZILLA, 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE and the Guillermo del Toro directed PACIFIC RIM as well as the Jackie Robinson biopic 42 and MAN OF STEEL with Warner Bros. In addition to WARCRAFT, highlights from Legendary's upcoming slate include BLACKHAT and CRIMSON PEAK.

@Rebel - There is only one thing a movie called "Skull Island" can be about. A "You've Got Mail" reboot.

Or I could see him playing a british fighter pilot who gets stranded on the island.

@yossarian
You don't have the balls to do that.

I could see it being set-up where he is shot down and runs into the island locals. Maybe meets an island girl who takes him to her tribe where the people are incredibly hostile to him. Then the tell him about the mythos of King Kong, and we go from there.

King Kong prequel?

In Kong, they were aware of the island and actively seeking it out. I can't remember now, but wasn't there a nasty back story on people crashing there and a map getting out or something? Either way, seems like this would be about that.

As much as I enjoyed Kong himself, I actually really liked the island and the other creatures in Jackson's movie. I may be the only one, but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

I won't rule out the chances of this film being great (as I am more amped to see a much younger Kong battling off more beast and monsters on Skull Island) However, I would've possibly preferred a more "native's viewpoint origin story" for Kong. I'm cool with all of these travelers and sailors and etc, but my main questioning here is "What can they possibly do differenty that hasn't been done before?" I know...I know... I wouldn't honestly expect to see 2hrs. 45mins. of CGI monsters roaming around but hopefully they percieve the natives with less barbarism.

Perhaps "barbarism" was the wrong word, but I wouldn't mind seeing a lighter side to their culture towards how they originally percieved Kong and etc.

Actually, I believe Idris Elba would be the direct link. lol "Thor" and "Pacific Rim".

Excited for this movie. I like Hiddleston and I love the basis for this film. We've seen Kong so many times it's about time we get a movie about how he ruled over Skull Island.

And by the way it's not a prequel to the Peter Jackson movie. Sorry....
