The first trailer for The Matrix Resurrections was released online earlier today (you can check it out here), and Warner Bros. has now shared an updated synopsis and a pair of new official stills.
The images feature a neon-lit street, and Neo (Keanu Reeves) doing his stopping bullets in mid-air thing while Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) watches on. It's the synopsis that's bound to stir up most of the conversation, however.
While we were led to believe that this fourth movie would be a direct continuation of Revolutions, this logline makes it sound like it'll disregard the sequels and serve as a follow-up to the original Matrix only. If that's the case, it would explain how Neo and Trinity are alive again after being killed-off in the last film, but it still seems like a bit of an odd creative decision - even if Reloaded and Revolutions were widely panned.
Of course, we might be reading way too much into this. Have a read of the synopsis below and let us know what you think.
“The Matrix Resurrections is a continuation of the story established in the first Matrix film… 20 years after the first film, the franchise that helped define pop culture at the turn of the century is back for a continuation and extension of the original movie. A mind-bending new adventure with action and epic scale, it’s set in a familiar yet even more provocative world where reality is more subjective than ever and all that’s required to see the truth is to free your mind"
Other franchise returnees include Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian, and Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson. Also joining the cast will be Andrew Caldwell, Priyanka Chopra, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen Hollman, Eréndira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Christina Ricci, Max Riemelt, and Brian J. Smith.
The Matrix Resurrections is directed by Lana Wachowski, and will be released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously on December 22.
