POWER RANGERS Reboot Will Feature The Big Screen's First Openly Gay Superhero Character
It's being reported that [SPOILER]'s character in Dean Israelite's Power Rangers reboot is going to be openly gay, which will actually make them the first LGBT protagonist in a superhero movie...
While superhero TV shows such as Supergirl and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have featured LGBTQI characters, the big screen has typically been a lot less progressive - but it looks like that's going to change with the upcoming Power Rangers reboot. Though the film has received mixed reviews, one element that's come in for a lot of praise is the decision to make one member of the team (Trini, the Yellow Ranger) openly gay.
During an interview with THR, director Dean Israelite revealed that Trini (Becky G) will experience “girlfriend problems” in a scene that’s been described as “pivotal” to the outcome of the movie.
"For Trini, really she’s questioning a lot about who she is. She hasn’t fully figured it out yet. I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That’s OK.’ The movie is saying, ‘That’s OK,’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe."
Since this news broke, some that have seen the movie have played this down a little, suggesting that we really only get a hint that Trini might be gay. Either way, this is a positive step in the right direction that will hopefully continue on in some future Marvel Studios and Warner Bros./DC projects.
Power Rangers hits theaters on March 24.
