Speaking with Collider, The Killing's Joel Kinnaman discusses the anticipated reboot of the RoboCop franchise. He confirms that filming begins in September, while also saying that he saw the original film many times before taking the title role in José Padilha's reboot. He also discusses the level of interest in the project, as well as working with Gary Oldman (who plays 'Norton' in the movie).

On The Level Of Interest In RoboCop:
It’s like when you say one thing, it’s everywhere, and that’s pretty awesome and a little bit intimidating. It makes you realize you have to think before speaking. That’s a quality I’m continuously evolving. For some reason, it seems like I’m bumping my head into the wall a little bit too many times, but now I think I’m doing alright. It’s fantastic. I used to be like “Why are we doing a remake? What are remakes being done for?” But then, we do that all the time in the theater. If we weren’t doing remakes, nobody would know who Shakespeare was. I’m not saying that Robocop is Shakespeare, but it’s a way to … we’re retelling. That’s what we do as human beings. We retell our favorite stories. That’s what we’ve done since we were sitting around campfires. It’s a part of the human spirit. It doesn’t have to be negative to creativity. It can be completely opposite. That’s how you can break new ground by rethinking something that’s already been done. José has a completely different take on this than Verhoeven had, and with all respect, everybody that’s involved in this movie loved the original and we have a lot of respect for it. We’re going to have a lot of throwbacks and there’s going to be a lot of fun stuff for the fans of the first movie. It’s a new story within the old one.

On Working With Gary Oldman:

That feels about as surreal as me being RoboCop. I couldn’t be happier. He’s pretty much the grand master of the game. ... So, I’m very, very excited and we have great scenes that have a lot of the substance that I was talking about. It’s very much a relationship between Gary Oldman’s character and Alex Murphy.

THERE'S ALWAYS THE PURISTS..THE "YOU SHOULDN'T REBOOT IT BECAUSE YOU'LL SCREW IT UP" PEOPLE..BUT IT'S TRUE WHAT HE SAID, WE RETELL STORIES ALL THE TIME, THEY DON'T ALWAYS WORK OUT..

SOME RETELLS WORK WELL..

I JUST HOPE THEY WAY THEY DO IT WORKS..ROBOCOP HAS A LOOK AN FEEL TO IT THAT IF YOU MESS WITH IT TOO MUCH PEOPLE WILL START TRIPP'N..I SAY IF YOUR GONNA DO IT..MAKE SURE IT'S GOING TO BE GOOD.

I'm open to this. It sounds like they really want to make a good film, not just cash in on the nostalgia reboot crowd. Plus, I've never seen Gary Oldman in a film I didn't like, so, fingers crossed.

Shakespeare and Robocop in the same sentence? Could it work? Star crossed lovers. Yes,

Robocop and Juliet.

"Wherefore art thou Clarence Boddicker?"

"He jests at scars that never felt a wound. But, soft! what bullet through yonder window breaks?"

"They'll fix it. They fix everything."

"It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Dead or alive, she's coming with me."

Yeah, I can see it now.

Umm...in this case you pop in the DVD of the original Robocop and share the "legend". ;-)

Are we really asking " If we don't remake these films, how will people know about them?"?! They're films! They already exist and can be re-watched any time we want. Maybe us remaking things all the time is an old habit learned from the theatre that is no longer necessary. How will anyone ever know about Robocop?!! Go watch the film!! We don't need to remake it in order for you to see it! It already exists!
Having said that, I like the idea of this being a new story in the middle of the old one. That kind of makes it less of a remake.
But the fact that they've already screwed up by naming Robo's creator as Norton instead of Morton? Yeah, [frick] 'em.

Plus Shakespeare doesn't get remade or rebooted or whatever. We don't even update the language let alone the scripts. We just keep doing them. If this was using the same script as the Verhoeven film, then it would be more acceptable. But also, more unnessecary.

IMO theres actually nothing wrong with remakes...if they are done right, for two reasons:

If the original movie or tv show was widely regarded as terrible and it could potentially be improved with a new outlook from a new director or producer (not the case with Robocop)

or if the original property was fantastic the first time around but can be given a fresh new approach i.e. True Grit, King Kong or potentially the new Total Recall (which is going to be closer the original story its based on)

But if its a remake that has nothing new to offer and the original movie was brilliant and remains relevant & fresh to this day (such as The Godfather and a ton of other classics), a remake it is an utter mistake

It remains to be seen if Robocop is an example of the former or the latter. It could be a good idea to remake if the new one has a complete new look to it and could not be linked to the original

or it could be a bad idea, if they mess up what Robocop is all about, we might be glad we have the original movie

it remains to be seen
