If someone had told you a few years ago that demand for tickets to a Star Trek movie would cause the IMAX website to crash, would you have believed them? Probably not. Of course, that was before J.J. Abrams reinvigorated the franchise with the superb 2009 reboot and the announcement that his next project will be Star Wars Episode VII! Tickets for Star Trek Into Darkness were in fact so in demand yesterday that the IMAX website ended up crashing (as you can see from the Tweets below). The site was inundated by fans and couldn't cope with having 10x as much traffic as usual; the last time that happened was for Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. Will we see the Star Trek sequel join the $1 billion box office club? It certainly seems likely at this point...

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

There's a lot of hype for IM3 and a lot of speculation going around for Man of steel, but I wouldn't be shocked if this is the better of the big 3 this summer

lol The UK is mentioned in the film. And Cumber....so it's practically a UK film.

BTW, what's with all the UK hype this year?

@fettastic the beginning of the movie is so good! I love it, because it pretty much sums up the recklessness of this version of Kirk - he's literally born in chaos and hellfire.

I also like Quinto's really subtle emotions through the film - it definitely shows that this is the early days for everyone, that Spock's human and Vulcan sides are conflicting, and he's trying to be a true, emotionless Vulcan.

There is no way this movie is going to get close to a billion dollars. The last one made what, less than 4 hundred million worldwide and now it's going to almost triple that? No chance. Star Trek is just not as popular outside the US. Infact it only made 127 million outside the US. That means 2/3 of its box office came right here in the US. This movie will be lucky to make 500 million worldwide.

Right, their emotions are not in check and none of them should be running a starship. It's like Dawson's Creek in Space. This is one of the reasons it shouldn't be called "Star Trek".

I'm not gonna speculate as to which movie will be best this summer, but of all the Blockbusters this movie had the best trailer. Not surprised that the tickets are selling like hotcakes.

...AND after the buzz got out as to how good the movie was, Star trek sold a ton of DVDs and Blu-rays.
