John Boyega: It "Doesn't Make Sense" For The STAR WARS Movies To Be Whitewashed

In a recent interview, rising talent and The Force Awakens star John Boyega teased a few plot details about his enigmatic hero 'Finn' - and hit back at the small minority of prejudiced 'Star Wars purists' who complained about his casting. Read what he said after the jump!

In a recent interview with V Magazine, rising star John Boyega opened up a little about his role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He began by describing 'Finn' as "in conflict with himself", and promised his character would have a "unique" story - one "never before seen" in the Star Wars saga. However, he refrained from going into much more detail - suggesting director JJ Abrams could be lurking anywhere, ready to make him disappear from Hollywood forever.

Last year, Finn sent the internet into a frenzy by initially appearing to be a Stormtrooper in the movie's first teaser... only to pop-up half a year later as a lightsaber-wielding Jedi. So why the costume change? According to Boyega, the answer is "very surprising" - and one we haven't guessed yet. "J.J. will send me YouTube clips of fans reacting to things online and it’s funny," he revealed, "The fans have no idea. It’s great they are talking, but nobody has a clue."

Most fans have taken to Finn already - but there's a small minority who seem uncomfortable with the thought of being decent human beings accepting a non-white protagonist. Thankfully, Boyega has made a habit of coming up with some great responses to their prejudice. "It was unnecessary," he stated bluntly when quizzed about the hate once again by V,
"I’m in the movie, what are you going to do about it? You either enjoy it or you don’t. I’m not saying get used to the future, but what is already happening. People of color and women are increasingly being shown on-screen. For things to be whitewashed just doesn’t make sense."

Sounds about right to me.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theatres December 18.
