STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC Remake May Be Coming Sooner Than Expected After Finding New Developer

It was beginning to look like the highly anticipated Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake might be facing the axe, but we now have a far more positive update on where things stand with the game...

There's a tonne of excitement surrounding the upcoming Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, but a disheartening update about the game found its way online last month. The re-release was said to be in "serious trouble" after some big changes behind the scenes at Aspyr Media, and it looked like that might be the end for the long-awaited title.

The remake of the 2003 hit was first announced last September and has been in development for nearly three years. However, there were rumblings for some time before that about a potential re-release, making it feel like this has been on the way forever.

With it being reported that the game has been delayed indefinitely, Star Wars fans have expressed concerns this remastered Knights of the Old Republic might never see the light of day, but a positive update has now thankfully found its way online.

Embracer Group (via SFFGazette.com) recently published its Q1 interim report, confirming that one of its AAA games has been moved to another studio within its group to ensure "the quality bar is where we need it to be for the title.”

While the title of that game isn't mentioned, common sense says it's the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. Interestingly, it's noted that the company is "not expecting any material delays for the title based on this transition," potentially contradicting reports of a lengthy delay that could see the game pushed back as far as 2025.

Saber Interactive started assisting Aspyre back in May, so we'd bet on them taking charge of the game.

In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the story takes place almost 4,000 years before the formation of the Galactic Empire, where Darth Malak, a Dark Lord of the Sith, has unleashed a Sith armada against the Galactic Republic. The player character, as a Jedi, must venture to different planets in the galaxy to defeat Malak.

Stay tuned to SFFGazette.com and GameFragger.com the latest Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic updates as we have them!

Considering it was delayed indefinitely before this, yeah I'd say it's coming sooner than I expected.

@Asterisk - it's a holdings group that bought quite a few studios over the last few years, with the biggest being Crystal Dynamics I think. They're relatively new

instead making of new remake games, this should do a drama series ala Game Of Thrones. We need the story of the old Jedi knights!

This game is actual class. If any of you haven’t ever played it before I heartily recommend it. I do wish they would have made a proper sequel though.

Been replaying The Force Unleashed lately and my, it has aged. Such a fun game!

@HagridsHole1 - I do wanna play it, especially with today's graphics and gameplay mechanics, that's why I want this remake.

Same with Force Unleashed really.

Jason Schreier said it coming out in the next 2 years is not gonna happen. He’s pretty accurate with his reporting so I believe him. Also I don’t think Aspyr or Saber are the best devs for this game.

Maybe a controversial take, but I don't think KotOR needs a developer with a great track record for original games. So much of the hard conceptual work has already been done (characters, tone, story, setting, pacing, etc.) All they need is to follow the roadmap of what was made before with modern techniques and a bigger budget. The real polish that KotOR needs is the combat system and maybe some tweaks to the movement system for variety.

There are some purists out there who want this game to somehow still be using modified D&D 3.5 turn-based rules (I know, I see you), but it was always the aspect keeping this game from being more mainstream. Feats and stats and skills all being different categories of upgrades, and which upgrades you get at level-up felt random and arbitrary, and you had to keep up with it for all 10 characters when you probably would only be taking 5 of them with any regularity? A light/dark system that only really affected arbitrary energy consumption of Force powers and for some reason also whether you could use equipment? That's something that was always begging to be streamlined.

If this game just ends up playing like an elaborate mod for Fallen Order, I'll be exceedingly happy even if that playstyle is a little generic at the moment. And the kind of studio that would be good at "solid, but generic" is a studio that mostly does ports and adaptations.

They don't need to reinvent the wheel here. An action-adventure light-RPG that just looks and plays up to modern standards is all I ever wanted. A chance to revisit my favorite game of all time and maybe to hopefully share my enthusiasm with new fans who are just discovering it.
