STAR WARS: Lucasfilm President Teases Luke Skywalker's Continued Impact In 2025 Movie Featuring Rey

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that Luke Skywalker's impact will continue being felt in the 2025 movie starring Daisy Ridley as Rey, stopping short of confirming a Mark Hamill appearance.

We all expected The Force Awakens to serve as Mark Hamill's long-awaited return as Luke Skywalker. Instead, he didn't appear until the final scene where his character said...nothing. It was a strange decision and meant that we never got to see Luke, Han Solo, and Princess Leia reunite on screen.

The Last Jedi's portrayal of the Jedi Master was an issue even for Hamill himself, and not even a heroic sacrifice was enough to make up for that. The Rise of Skywalker tried to make up for that with a Force Ghost appearance, but it mostly fell flat.

Since then, the younger Luke has been somewhat redeemed with appearances in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett

Following the events of Return of the Jedi, he was clearly at his peak, and the hope now is that Luke will be part of Dave Filoni's Star Wars movie revolving around characters like Din Djarin and Ahsoka Tano.

During a recent interview with Empire (via SFFGazette.com), Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy strongly hinted that Luke's presence will be felt in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's 2025 movie featuring Daisy Ridley's Rey.

"We’re going very far back, we’re looking at the present, and now we’re moving 15 years after 'The Rise Of Skywalker,'" the executive said of the project. "The First Order has fallen, the Jedi are in chaos – there’s even a question of how many exist anymore – and Rey’s building the New Jedi Order, based on the text that she was given and that Luke imparted on her."

While this doesn't confirm that Hamill will appear, it's clear the fact he saved those books (before they were taken by Rey) will be crucial in shaping the new Jedi Order his former pupil sets out to create.

Based on other comments made by Kennedy during Star Wars Celebration, we hope to have more to share with you soon!

The Rey future spinoff is definitely the least exciting thing they’re working on but I’m still holding off hope they finally can do something interesting in that time period. To me it sounds exactly like they’re just going to do ANH/TFA AGAIN with Rey being the “Obi-Wan” type which is the absolute most creatively bankrupt way they can go

for 2/3rds of the last saga they reiterated the theme of letting the past die to begin anew - even killing off these legacy characters unceremoniously - just to turn around and still milk them for all they're worth.

Kennedy & Co. already screwed up his character. i don't trust they'll get it any more right on the next try and i wish they would just let them be at this point. I'm sure Hamill would tell them to piss off if he didn't have such an attachment to the character and, of course, money.

@HeraldNumber7 - them killing of the OT trio actually accidentally created a great arc for Rey post-ROTS, but knowing Lucasfilm they won't follow up on that

What does this woman do all day? They just retread the same story over and over. Absolutely incapable of coming up with anything original.

@GeneralZod - It’s as if they know they completely botched the sequels so they are giving Rey the story Luke should have had starting in episode 7. A Palpatine rebuilding the Jedi order is such a slap in the face to all Star Wars fans.

@mountainman - And that's exactly what she's doing. Remarkable she wasn't fired. Instead of a failing grade, she got a "do over" from the teacher on her term paper, and she's doing it again. Kinda like what WB gave to Zack Snyder with JL.

@GeneralZod - It seems as if it takes far too many repeated failures before these studios change course.

Translation: We are taking the least interesting character who is the descendant of the most evil man in the galaxy (Palpatine), who stole the Skywalker name without being part of their blood line, and then giving her the iconic hero Luke Skywalker’s story arc. We made Luke a quitter and incapable of training the New Jedi Order and we are giving it to an ineffectual female character because men are inept or evil in the Star Wars Kennedy universe.

Dead on arrival.

Return of Jedi ends in victory
Then the sequel picks up and all our heroes unknown to the audience have become failures.

They force you to accept that all your effort and emotion in those victorious movies were for naught and they don’t even want to show how those failures happened.

It’s almost like if Lucas would have gone from AOTC to ANH in the narrative timeline and just told audiences to accept it.

Almost what it happening now.

@IronGenesis - Correct. This is what Star Wars is like when written by people who see it as a simple marketing commodity and not a cohesive story planned out over generations.

@IronGenesis - you make a great point. The sequels made the mistake by having a lot of story take place off-screen, while the OT and PT do the complete opposite.

To me Lucas' Star Wars is a masterclass in writing story. Each movie builds on the lore thats established on-screen, and narratively everything is introduced in context of a previous scene.

The Rey movie is exactly what they should have done with The Force Awakens, but with Luke.

@ClintThaHamster - I don't see that as a reason why we couldn't have followed the New Jedi order he builds.

@SheepishOne - Oh, so you didn't mean "exactly" what they should have done with Force Awakens, since that would mean it'd be set 15 years after RotJ.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 5/14/2023, 9:49 AM
@ClintThaHamster - I may have played it a bit fast and loose with the word "exactly".

Basically, I wish Episode 7 would have followed a new Jedi order established by Luke, rather than having him by himself on Ach-To and the Jedi completely gone. We could have had flashbacks to the earlier days, but I like the idea of the new Jedi order flourishing as the empire dies.

Can’t wait to see Rey Palpatine’s Jedi Academy with their star students Broom Boy and a retconned in “teenage” Grogu! They will take on the Empire 3.0! Grumpy Force Ghost Luke will come in for Member Berries!

@mountainman - I'm not gonna lie, I actually think a 20-something year old broom boy as the protagonist would be pretty cool actually.

TLJ took a turd by having him as the closing shot, but the message of anybody having the force is nice. Wish ROTS understood that with Rey.
