STAR WARS REBELS: Meet Our Main Character, 'Ezra Bridger'

It seems young Ezra is destined to become a Jedi. Here's what exec producer Dave Filoni had to say to TV Guide about this new character, who certainly sounds like he's set to be the principal protagonist in the show.

“To survive, instinctively every now and then when he’s in a jam he uses the Force. He doesn’t call it that. He doesn’t know that’s what he’s doing. He thinks he’s got some abilities that are a little strange every now and then, but they help him out. It’s instinctive, it’s reactionary. With Ezra we see how a kid is reacting to this imperial rule. That becomes a big question: What is imperial rule like? We’ve seen it in the movies with a big rebellion that ends up blowing up the Death Star, but do we just assume that when the Empire took over in Revenge of the Sith it was seen as a bad thing? I would challenge that. It wasn’t this terrible thing that came in and was cruel to everyone all at once. It was slow to build its power base and spread out, and then we get to see the rebel alliance it affects, and the repercussions of that tyranny.”

Cool visuals.

In all seriousness, I am concerned about undermining the basis of the original films. Not to be a curmudgeon but in the classic trilogy, the picture painted is one where the Jedi are wiped out. Now, I know that there are always force-sensitive individuals, and that this show is set well before A New Hope, but if this Ezra fellow becomes a Jedi and then hangs around for the new Episode 7-type films, it will be a cop-out IMO.

I would say that there does not always need to be Jedi and force-sensitivity to make for good Star Wars stories (see the Han Solo Trilogy), but I realize that that for marketing purposes, they want to have that in the mix.

He's basically Young Han Solo, if he had force sensitivity as a kid.

Not sure what to think yet. Still wish this series was set after the saga..
