Yesterday we got the long awaited first trailer for Star Wars Battlefront and like most reveal trailers for games, it didn't show off that much gameplay footage. While there were snippets of gameplay footage at the end, the trailer felt more like a cutscene to the game then a trailer showcasing the game. We got a lot of news about the game. Some good, some bad, some interesting, and of course DLC releated news.
No Single Player Campaign Mode....
It's been confirmed that Instead of a story-driven campaign, Star Wars Battlefront features a series of missions, playable alone or via online and local co-op.
General Manager of DICE Patrick Bach said on the topic of no single player campaign mode, "I would say they occupy that space...where you play alone. Or you can play co-op, split screen or on the internet. The game is first and foremost a multiplayer game. Battlefront was a multiplayer game. That’s the game we wanted to create — to recreate the battles of the Original Trilogy."
....Instead Will Have Co-Op Missions
Bach on this said that "The co-op missions are connected and they are quite different" from the regular competitive multiplayer. Missions are short, and intended to be replayed on higher difficulties.
Producer Craig Mcleod offered more info, stating, "Because it’s only a two-player experience you’re sharing with a friend, they’re custom built. It’s not about pulling a section out of somewhere else and you just do them. I can’t go into specifics about what mission we’ll have, but when we think about multiplayer and co-op, what we’re really trying to do is immerse yourself in your Star Wars battle fantasies."
Players Can Play As Male AND Female Characters
DICE general manager Patrick Bach said that "Male or female characters are separate from customization. You can’t do it in crazy ways. You can’t have a pink Darth Vader. You want the Stormtroopers to look like Stormtroopers. Our customization is tilted toward what makes sense."
Battlefront giving the choice to players from the get-go means males and females will fight side by side in known quantities for the first time in the series.
Playable Characters
It's been confirmed that several playable hero from the films will make appearances during the multiplayer battles, including Boba Fett and the Darth Vader.
Location, Location, Location
The game is set to have battles on only 4 planets. The planets for will be Tatooine, Endor, Hoth, and Sullust.
Free DLC Involving Battles From THE FORCE AWAKENS
Set to release a month after the launch date on December 8, Star Wars Battlefront players will receive free DLC for the game that adds another planet.
The DLC will be called Battle of Jakku, the DLC is set on the desert planet that made its first appearance in teasers for The Force Awakens. Fans who pre-order Battlefront get the DLC a week early, on December 1.
Battlefront producer Craig Mcleod said that the Battle of Jakku DLC is the only way Star Wars fans can experience this battle. The Battle of Jakku takes place a year following the Battle of Endor, making it the bridge between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.
Deluxe Edition
Gamestop has a Star Wars Battlefront: Deluxe Edition for only $10 more which includes the following: Han Solo's Blaster (instant access), Ion Detonator (instant access), MPL Ion Torpedo (instant access), Ion Shock (exclusive emote), and Victory (exclusive emote).
NO SPACE BATTLES?!?!?!?!?!
Patrick Back, General Manager at DICE said that Star Wars Battlefront “It’s not much about space. Most battles are planetary battles, so our focus right now is to make sure we only get that right. The core of Star Wars battles — the Endors, the Hoths, et cetera — you want to take that to perfection. You want to do it right. Space is hard, right? Not from a [development] perspective, but from a logistical perspective. Is that fun? For us it doesn’t make sense to create a battle above you if you’re fighting other players who are not there to fight. Our focus is to do planetary battles.”
Battlefront Producer Craig Mcleod said, “No space battles. It’s all about the epic planetary battles and getting that right. Fighting with X-Wings and TIE Fighters, we have that. It’s taken in the atmosphere. This is something we discussed with Lucasfilm and they were happy to be on board with that.”
AND NO PREQUEL BATTLES?!?!?!?!
When asked about if there would be prequel battles, Back outright said “No.” He said DICE's goal is to accomplish a sense of authenticity best representing the original Star Wars films.
Mcleod also explained that Battlefront would not feature planets such as Mustafar and Naboo at launch, and added, "I can’t talk exactly about what the future holds for Battlefront, but I can say we’ll definitely be supporting Battlefront post-launch. We have a long history of add-on content.”
