Following the last two relaunch misfires
Terminator Salvation and
Terminator: Genisys, the Terminator franchise is again set to reinvent itself this time with
Blade Runner 2049 actress Mackenzie Davis as the new face of the franchise, co-starring Columbian actress Natalia Reyes, singer and actor Diego Boneta and
Agents of SHIELD actor Gabriel Luna as a new version of a SkyNet's eponymous killing machine.
The film will also see the return of franchise stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton as the T-800 and Sarah Connor, respectively, and will be helmed by
Deadpool director Tim Miller with the involvement of franchise creator James Cameron.
In an interview with
Collider Cameron spoke about how his approach in developing this reboot has differed from when he originated the franchise, stating:
"We’re developing a new Terminator film. And The Terminator films are all about artificial intelligence. But I would say we’re looking at it differently than when I wrote the first story in 1982. That was just your classic ‘technology bad, smart computers bad’ kind of thing. Nowadays though — it’s got to be a much more nuanced perspective. So its ‘Smart computers bad… BUT…’ That’s the new motif."
Just what this "but" and ellipses is and how it will manifest itself in the film's narrative remains to be seen, but in a new age of technology, transparency, and surveillance could we expect a more socially pertinent Terminator film than previous entries? We'll have to wait until 22nd November 2019 to know for sure.
