This year's rebootquel, Terminator: Genisys seems to at least wants to be different. That is most apparent by the Terminator-enhanced John Connor in full focus of its second trailer. At first it may seem like a cheap shocking twist for cheap shocking twist's sake, but this reveal goes back all the way to 2009's Terminator: Salvation and it's dark alternate ending.
In the theatrical ending, Christian Bale's "John Connor" is impaled through the chest by a CGI Arnoldbot-800 and is miraculously saved when Sam Worthington's "Marcus" gives him his magic heart, which has the power to bring saviors of mankind back to life. The rest of the movie ends predictably enough. John goes back to the Resistance, he's a hero, and the leader of mankind. Blah Blah. Blah.
Boring.
The original / possibly canon ending begins with John being impaled like a Connor-kebab, only this time he stays dead. Marcus is convinced the world needs John Connor, whether it's really him or not. So in true Buffalo Bill fashion, he assumes the role of Connor by wearing his skin over his cyborg skeleton.
That's not even the dark part.
As Marcus strolls on back to Camp Humanity, Helena Bonham Skynet assumes direct control of Marcus-John's body and proceeds to murder every Resistance member in sight. In the span of a few minutes minutes, every important member of the Resistance is swiftly annihilated. The last shot of the movie is a close up shot of Sky-John's eyes gleaming red with evil.
Cut to black.
This scenario could indeed be canon, due to the past timeline being so drastically changed and/or at the very least influential to the creation of Genisys's TermiJohn.
