It been known for a while now that the rights to the Terminator franchise are coming back to James Cameron in 2019. The classic sci-fi film series has struggled ever since Cameron departed after the smash hit, Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

With the rights set to return to him, Cameron has been focused on how he will handle the release of a new movie. Early reports have him in negotiations with Deadpool director, Tim Miller, to helm the film as he will be busy with his upcoming Avatar sequels.

While speaking to News Australia, Cameron revealed that he actually has a trilogy in mind, and is working with current Terminator rights holder, David Ellison, to get it off the ground. "The question is — has the franchise run its course or can it be freshened up," he asked. "Can it still have relevance now where so much of our world is catching up to what was science fiction in the first two films. We live in a world of predator drones and surveillance and big data and emergent AI (artificial intelligence). So I am in discussions with David Ellison, who is the current rights holder globally for the Terminator franchise and the rights in the US market revert to me under US copyright law in a year and a half so he and I are talking about what we can do. Right now we are leaning toward doing a three-film arc and reinventing it. We’ll put more meat on the bones if we get past the next couple of hurdles as and when we announce that."

Talk then shifted to Cameron's disdain for the other films in the franchise that were produced after he walked away. When it comes to the likes of Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines, Terminator: Salvation, and Terminator: GENISYS, it seems Cameron has only spoken positively about them to show support for his friend, Arnold Schwarzenegger. "I think it’s fairly widely known that I don’t have a lot of respect for the films that were made later," he explained. "I was supportive at the time in each case for Arnold’s sake because he is a close friend. He has been a mate of mine since 33 years ago so I was always supportive and never too negative. But they didn’t work for me for various reasons."

As of right now, it is not known whether or not Schwarzenegger will be a part of the new set of films. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is currently scheduled to be re-released in theaters in 3D on August 3, 2017 , and will also get an amazing new Collectors Edition 4K release on October 3, 2017.

@Kman -

That's [frick]in bonkers. The only reason this franchise went down the tubes is because Cameron got bored with it. If he's into it, and heavily involved and not just giving his bullsh!t, "I'm very excited about this new one, etc, etc" crap, it will be great.

I have no idea why he didn't exec produce the others, but i'm excited if he's 100% in.

He can say this all he want, but he won't finish Avitar for 30 years so who cares. This won't happen until at least 2028

@RancidBane - Well he's not directing this and it sounds like Tim Miller is on board, and Arnold is getting older, so I think there's a good chance we could see one of these in a couple years.

@Termin8er - producing is still a big deal. Something he doesn't have the time for. If he is going to Shepard this thing into something he wants then he will be hands on. He simply doesn't have that kind of time.

@RancidBane - I think he knows how to handle his own schedule lol. Arnold getting older is a big factor. James Cameron is most likely fully capable of producing these while making the Avatar sequels.

@Termin8er - I wouldn't be so sure. Avatar has been rescheduled 3 times. He literally isn't finished with them until 2023. He is an ambitious guy. This hurts his ability to accurately make and keep a schedule.

@RancidBane - Wait, people actually like that overrated garbage called Avatar? Lol

@YoloSwaggins812 - for some reason yeah. I don't count myself as one of them. Sure it looks good, but it is just Dances with Wolves in space.

@RancidBane - He's an ambitious guy who has arguably never failed. He wouldn't return to the franchise if he didn't have something to add to it, considering how diluted it's become, and he wouldn't move forward with it if he couldn't do it. Avatar keeps getting rescheduled because Avatar is massive. Terminator is not massive. Less of an undertaking by a longshot

@Termin8er - oh the man has failed plenty. Aliens of the deep, ghosts of the abyss, pharinna part 2. He is no saint man. Every director has bad movies. Speilburg has bad films so does Nolan. So don't tell me he never failed.

@RancidBane - Come on man. Two of those are documentaries, one was his first movie, some mediocre B movie. As a director of fiction blockbusters, he has never failed. So don't tell me you didn't know what I was talking about.

@Termin8er - dude a flop is a flop. I don't care if it is a documentary or your first step up to the plate. Don't paint him as the greatest of all time. You said he will have no problem with working his schedule to do terminator trilogy. I'm just saying the man has experienced failure and has a very difficult time keeping a schedule. You say terminator is a small thing. I very much disagree with that. It is a huge franchise that requires a ton of cgi. The man is working on a single franchise that came out in like 2009. It is 2017 man the ship has sailed. He needs to just give up on it.

@RancidBane - Relax guy lol. Yeah he's experienced a grand total of three misfires. Three. As a blockbuster fiction director he's one of the greatest of all time. Most of his movies are classics. And by "small", I meant, "not as colossal as Avatar". Kevin Feige is now producing like three marvel movies a year. Cameron can handle it.

@Termin8er - I will end this silly argument with he produced the last 2 terminator films and they are trash. So don't count your chickens until they hatch my friend.

Termin8er - 7/27/2017, 5:31 PM
@RancidBane - He didn't........

@RancidBane - You should do a tad more research before you call an argument "silly"

RancidBane - 7/27/2017, 5:36 PM
@Termin8er - you are correct. My bad I thought he did when he made comments like this.

“If you liked the Terminator films, you’re going to love this movie.” -James Cameron

@Termin8er - that quote was about genisys
Termin8er
Termin8er - 7/28/2017, 8:47 AM
@RancidBane - I know, and it bums me out that he said it, but I can understand him not wanting to say bad things about it before it comes out. Just seems like a class act thing to do.

Remember when we used to get a new James Cameron film frequently. And they were all so very different.

I think we've had our fill of terminator movies. You seriously don't need to make any more, let another franchise have a go at killer androids.

3 more? please, no, come up with a new idea cameron. The dude has totally lost his touch, avatar is one of the most generic movies ever made. Give us a new killer IP, I've been waiting for a very long [frick]ing time.
