Tron Legacy is a difficult film to review in many ways. It's a sequel to a cult 80s movie that everyone probably remembers, but remembers fondly? Well, lets just say we;re not talking about Blade Runner 2. Depending on whether you saw it, liked, it, loved it, where indifferent to it or maybe even hated it will effect your reasons for going to see this sequel.

Tron 2. Tron: Legacy. Was that first movie even good enough to warrant a legacy? I'm sure there are many who will proclaim its greatness, but in reality, it was a moderately entertaining sci-fi actioner, ahead of it's time maybe, with half decent performances and a plot that could have been scribbled on a beer mat. If that floats your boat you will love this sequel. Don't get me wrong, I did like Tron. But no more than I liked The Last Starfighter, Flight Of The Navigator ..any number of movies that I remember and enjoyed as a kid. When I heard about the sequel I was intrigued because of that sense of nostalgia. Then a slew of pretty good(great?) trailers hit and I was well up for it.

The story should really be the selling point here. It's been said that even if you haven't seen the original that you can step into Tron 2 and still grasp the story but basically that's a load of shit. You may comprehend what's going on but you will never 100% be integrated into the world, or invested the characters that have been established in the previous film. Plot wise, here you are. Kevin Flyyn is trapped in the grid, his son must fight to free him. There might be a wee bit more to it, but honestly not much. "Ok" you say, you weren't coming to this film for a great plot? Listen up. Visually and aurally it's [frick]ing amazing. Daft Punk really up their game wit the soundtrack. A throwback that reminded me of Vangelis' score for Blade Runner back in the day. The CGI and 3d work fantastically. The world isn't as fully realized as say Avatar but it doesn't need to be. The Grid is supposed to be a computer generated environment after all and it immerses you in that world. Fantastic action sequences with frisbees and light cycles and shit. I don't mean to sound flippant, it works as great action but if you don't give a [frick] about the characters involved then is it really worth a damn? The answer is of course: No it [frick]ing isn't.

The main protagonist, Sam Flynn, is not a character. He is a cliche. A walking, talking advert for the trailer. He doesn't even really have a lot of dialog. He says things like: " NOT GOOD!" and: "ENJOY YOUR SWIM" and various other garbage that may excite a child. For me he kinda came across as a bit of a cocky tool and never really connects on any kind of emotional level. Which might be ok if we weren't asked to make that connection. But as I'm sure you know, the whole crux of the the story is Sam's reunion with his long lost father Kevin, who has been trapped in the Grid for years. In fairness to Garret Hedlund, he does the best with what he has. The guy does have screen presence. And, Jeff Bridges is as awesome as ever as Flynn and his younger doppleganer Clu(sometimes believable, sometimes not). He is the emotional core of the story(for me anyway) and keeps me trucking along with the nonsensical plot which I'm not even going to get into(It would take too long...honestly). Another bonus is Olivia Wilde as Quorra. Impressive as the only other sympathetic character. Then we have Martin Sheen as probably the most pointless character in movie history. I swear to the Cylon God he made the entire cinema look around in disbelief as he pranced around like a reject from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Tron: Legacy is an entertaining movie. It's exciting at times, and even manages a (small bit) of connection with it's characters. But aside from an eye/ear gasm and Jeff Bridges there really isn't that much to recommend. Lovers of the original movie may be equal parts vindicated and disappointed. I really don't know. I suppose it all depends on what your looking for.

Oh, incidentally, Tron(the dude the film is named after) appears for about 3 and a half minutes. First he is good..then evil, then good again for absolutely no reason. Then dies with a helmet on. Tron there. In a film called Tron : Legacy. Brilliant.

YES,
thank you,
the movie was incredibly strenuous to watch, essentially just finding a plot was tiring enough.
I fell asleep.

I think this may be the first movie that's gotten a poor review on CBM! (the first review I've seen anyways.) I actually just got back from seeing it a second time after my friends dragged me along. Personally, I thought this was NO Avatar. Anyone that tries to compare the two needs to go see that movie again. Tron's cgi was great and I was thoroughly impressed with the look of CLU, but the Grid doesn't even come close to matching the visual wonder of Pandora. As for the rest of the film.... meh. The actor's give wonderful performances despite a subpar script. There was a lot of cheesy interactions between Quora and Sam. And alot of the story seemed to make no sense whatsoever. (Flynn's weird desire with perfection seemed like piss-poor reasoning to justify the Grid's existence.) However, Olivia Wilde is sexy as hell. And the music was awesome. I'd give the movie a 3/5.

As strange as it may sound the effects of Tron is what sold it. At the time they were cool as hell but the movie was slow and not that great overall all these years later. Sounds like the new may hare that those qualities. I'll watch it at least once on DVD.

Avatar was on the same level. There wasn't any originality in plot or design. It was just pretty to look at just like Tron. Stop putting that movie on a pedestal.

As for Tron itself - plot wasn't really there but it looked great. Should have had more of the grid games in it but eh, wadda ya do?

ETA @ Ror I loved both The Last Starfighter and Flight of the Navigator as a kid too! I think FotN is more watchable by today's standards but I know what you mean.

I wasn't praising anything about Avatar except for the visual splendor. I just felt that Tron didn't even come close to reaching that level.

I totally agree. Although I quite enjoyed the movie...the script was terrible. With a better script, it would have been perfect. I still found it incredible though.

(BTW, Michael Sheen was in this movie, not Martin Sheen)

Didn't mean you specifically, just seemed that way since you were the only one on here that made that comparison. My bad dude. Didn't mean to single you out or anything but I understand. Just seems everywhere I go I keep hearing about Avatar and how over hyped it actually is. Hell, with a budget of $500 million it damn well better look amazing but it seems like everyone is using that movie as the standard to base all movies on like it is the definitive of perfection.

This movie was highly entertaining. The script wasnt shawshamk redemption, but it didnt need to be. We cant expect every movie to be the godfather. Did it entertain you? Thats what matters. weve become way too critical of every movie that comes out. Check out my review on the Reviews tab. \m/\m/

I like the review and pretty much agree. Tron 2 was a pretty pointless movie, but the action scenes and soundtrack made the movie watchable and even entertaining at times.

Also, I never saw the original but did it make sense that it was called Tron, because this didn't, it should have been called the Grid or something because Tron had almost nothing to do with it. And was the original Tron about the Origins of the Gird and Clu, because the brief explanation of their existence in Tron 2 was the only interesting thing in the movie. If thye would have focused a little more on the actual environment and why things are the way they are, why they need to eat, why they need freighters and various other things that no one thought needed explaining, then this could have been a very intriguing film.

The review was decent... I agree with most of it. Especially the fact that if you didn't see the original you couldn't connect the same as those who have seen it.

P.s. It's michael sheen not Martin.

I read somewhere that there was a guy that committed suicide because that planet in Avatar wasn't real. It didn't deserve to be the top grossing movie of all time. Most people saw it because it just looked good. You know how people get distracted by shiny things...

Lousy review format. No spoiler warning and blowing the part about the Tron character. :P

I can imagine parties being sucked dry with a flair like that.

I'd give this review 5 negative stars, if I were going to be fair. But I'll give it a 1 star to be polite. :)

And no, it wasn't better late.

Dear Ror:
Hi! My favorite part was by far Martin Sheen's acting. I mean the way he twirled that can...genius! But I suppose you'd have to be a damn good actor after nearly 50 years of acting... oh wait, that doesn't sound right... :^) Notice the sarcasm, lol. ya... Martin Sheen was thankfully no where near that 'Zuse' character.

Martin Sheen > Michael Sheen

Good review Ror, but there is something I disagree with...
"It's been said that even if you haven't seen the original that you can step into Tron 2 and still grasp the story but basically that's a load of shit" I've never seen the first film but still understood the film very well, and was immersed from start to finish.
And with Sam Flynn, I think the character was more developed than you give him credit for, sure he was a bit of a cocky cliché, but what do you expect from a guy who's promised so much by his father, who then disappears without a trace for 20 years? But there was more to him, like the whole 'giving the people stuff which was meant to be free' thing, it is quite complex if you think about what kind of guy would do that, and go to those lengths to do that. Honestly, I just think he needed a better script
Although I agree 150% on the whole Martin Sheen thing... That's what ruined the movie for me, he was such a tool in that film I wanted to get out of my seat and punch him. And graphics-wise, I found it on a par with Avatar, but there's no comparison really, they're two very different designs (strange planet and digital world) that aren't easily compared, simply as there is very little common ground between the two.

And the 'Tron' thing was a nice twist IMO, the only real way to bring Tron into this movie based on the storyline, he's a legendary hero who is presumed dead after an epic battle with the main villain. Instead, the villain sees his potential and corrupts him. He's been in that state for 20 years, but due to his new purpose, he doesn't warrant any more screen time, he's become an abomination. Eventually, Kevin Flynn connects with him in the final battle and he redeems himself by 'sacrificing' himself to save the new heroes, making them his legacy. (Although, he's not even shown dying, his circuits change colour which signifies he's good again, and he's just shown sinking, not de-rezzing.)

Like I said though, good review, just a few things I personally disagree with.

Nice review.
I nearly fell asleep a few times in the cinema.
I found that aside from the odd cool money shot, Michael Sheen was the most entertaining character, albeit, yes, pointless.

And its 3D was second rate to Avatar's.

I saw Megamind 3D the same day - enjoyed it much more...

Great review, buy kind of harsh IMO! :) The 3D was disappointing, and the script was indeed dodgy, but I really enjoyed most of what you seemed to hate! Each to their own though...I [frick]ing hated the original for example! (and you know how we disagree about Singer's X-Men movies, lol!) Good stuff though dude - made for a great read.

I didn't hate the movie, iy was enjoyable enough. By some of your comments you would think I gave it one star!

Great write-up as always, Ror! Given that this franchise has never been plot oriented and since everyone and their mothers have their own tastes and especially their own reasons to see this film, it's really hard to go by ANY review of it but our own. I haven't seen it yet but for me, it'll ALL be about the look, feel and atmosphere the sequel SHOULD provide, since those aspects are precisely what made me fall in love with the original as a child. For me, the original Tron was as epic as what people consider Empire Strikes Back to be. Which is kinda funny cause as a child, Empire was the chapter i hated the most. I highly prefered Return of the Jedi and on account of nostalgia, i guess, it's still my favorite chapter to this day. The original Tron provided escapism from the "real" and stale world we lived in, probably more than any other film ever made before except later on from Labyrinth obviously, and maybe... Neverending Story... MAYBE. It wasn't a full fantasy story you witnessed from top to bottom, it was real life sucked INTO a fantasy setting and it was basically all the rage back then. Seriously, Narnia would have been so much more epic if it had been made in those days, even if the effects wouldn't have been as breath taking as they are today. IMO Tron was just a perfect experience for the 80ies child, i guess. So the opportunity to freefall back into that experience with Legacy is what makes it highly anticipatable, yet surely and unfortunately, way too overhyped for the average non fan. So i will agree with you, without even having seen the sequel, that it is indeed "bullshit" to say that any average movie goer can just watch this and be satisfied of having paid the full price of admission, without even feeling the need to rent the original afterwards. If this review was from a fan's point of view, yes i would've said it sounded a bit harsh. But it is a well warranted review from a non fan POV. Once again, great review! I can't wait to see this :)

I agree with you on a lot of points and as I am at work I won't go into them in detail, but I though this was a great movie. This may be because I am a Network Security Admin/Programmer. I think if you are a serious IT geek and a geek at heart you dig on a lot more of the dialog and catch a lot of things for that just made me happy. Just one example at the beginning when he is actually hacking into the system and what not. Its running ACTUAL unix, not some flashy BS to make it look cool and its all real commands being run. Call me a geek but that made me excited, along with the whole slap in the face without really saying it to Microsoft.

All in all a good review and I would give it 4-4.5 stars. I do agree with you on the whole Tron:Legacy factor, yet you see his face for....2 minutes maybe? Hes in the whole movie but .. you know what I mean if you've seen it. Nice job Ror.

thank you for your review. However I have to disagree.. I know my opinion isn't really that important but this is what I think:

There are a few movies out there that I respect the artistic vision of the creators. I respect this movie and watch it as 'A story they are telling me'.. I can not expect anything from the movie but accept it as it is given.

When you watch a movie and think to yourself that it 'isn't how you think it should be', then you are going to hate the movie because they are tell you their story not yours.

I loved the Characters, the story and the special FX. I felt this to be a great sequel (and possibly setting up for another movie.)

I see a some people saying very bad things about this movie.. and I am just not seeing it with their glasses.

I think that a lot of people went in to this movie thinking it was going to be like CRANK with fast paced adrenaline rush throughout. so when it slowed down and focused on storyline people with a short attention span lost interest. (so to them there was not a good enough story to keep their attention) It is a father/son story, and there is some religious messages and alarmist messages there about the human condition. (Look at the obvious likeness to Hitler and the holocaust with CLU and the ISOs for example)

This is not a stand alone movie, it is a sequel that not only continues the story of Kevin Flynn but creates a massive story with memorable characters (Like Zuse & Jarvis being comic relief) TRON is the hero of both movies.. he is the security program designed to bring down the MCP then befriends the User Kevin Flynn helps him create a new Grid, then is reconditioned by CLU to do his bidding. His love of the Users redeems him to reboot and help Flynn by (trying to) take down CLU. So there.,.. a redemption story in the mix as well.

Watch it again with an open mind, let the movie tell the story.

I agree with Ror. This movie was ok. Im a huge fan of the original TRON and I was really cyked about Legacy. It could have been alot better imo. I hate it when you are watching a movie and one of the main character's verbally states what the plot/mcguffin is and it still doesn't make any sense. "It's the magical iso's, man." Yeah.

Also, TRON didn't have all that much to do with the first one either but at least you could see him and hear him speak from time to time. I guess they couldn't afford 2 cgi entities. Which young Kevin Flynn isn't fooling anyone. Even my wife who doesn't know the difference between 2d, 3d, motion capture, thought that he looked "animated".

hotkarl8083 - 12/22/2010, 8:24 AM
@grimm

Point proven. The plot was so predictable, all of the characters were cliched, and the designs were unimaginative. "How do we make a creature look alien? I know! Lets add an extra set of legs to them!" or "Lets mix and match other animals! Look, I just drew a hammer head Rhino! This is definitely going on James Camerons fridge!" Cameron pulled up in his pretty sports car and almost everyone was suckered into it.

Ror, Your a moron for having an opinion in which all of us can't agree with you! And your a tool who needs to get laid for not liking it! And even though you've been giving reviews under your own format for a looong time and you'd think by now I'd be used to it, I'm not, and your retarded for that too!

lol, did I capture the essence of a fair amount of E-thugs? Ror, I think you expected a bit more out of this movie didn't you? I kinda get a vibe of disappointment in that regard. I've always thought of Hedlund as a mediocre actor myself so I didn't expect much on his end and I didn't like the original Tron at all. Basically I wanna see this movie because Jeff Bridges is one of the best actors ever and I could listen to that guy read the phone book... can't wait to see True Grit! Overall, your review makes the movie seem to be exactly what I thought it would... a good popcorn action flic with stunning visuals. Thanks for the review bud.
