WonderCon '13: PACIFIC RIM Footage Description

Some new footage was revealed for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim at WonderCon 2013 and by all accounts, it was mind blowing. It seems the first trailer was just the tip of the iceberg that's coming July 13th to US theaters.

Various reports from WonderCon 2013 all agree on one thing, Pacific Rim is quite the visual spectacle and the film is even more epic than what the first trailer conveyed. A new tagline for the film was also revealed, "Go big, or go extinct." By all accounts, director Guillermo del Toro did a Tolkien-level amount of world building on Pacific Rim which it appears will be rewarded at the box office this summer.

Pacific Rim del Toro and Jaegers

[Note: The following info will be revealed in the next trailer so these are not spoilers.]

Highlights:
- A little history on the world of Pacific Rim was revealed. Once the Jaegers were built, the tide turned in a war that humanity was loosing. However, a recent event has turned the tide yet again and now the kaiju have the upper hand.

- The new tagline is "Go Big, or go Extinct.”

-A big reveal was that apparently there will be a big battle between jaegers and kaiju in SPACE!

-A scene was shown of a Jaeger dragging a cruise ship which was reminiscent of how you'd typically see the hero in a film drag his sword or axe along the ground and see sparks.

- Ron Pearlman's character is a black market kaiju parts/organs dealer named Hannibal Child.

-The Chinese Jaeger is the only one with three pilots instead of two.

- There are 12 kaiju and 9 Jaegers in the movie. A massive amount of designs were created and del Toro and co. held something like an American Idol vote off to finalize the cast of monsters and robots.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Sounds cool! Hopefully it doesn't bomb at the box office though but people seem to love huge robots fighting shit as it was made evident with the last Transformers movie.
