In the final set report interview conducted from Comingsoon.net, star Michael Cera who portrays the title character in Edgar Wright’s adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs The World, sits down with his co-star Jason Schwartzman aka Gideon, to talk about the movie.
The interviewer asks Schwartzman how he researched his character to which Schwartzman went into great detail saying,
“Basically, first I had this great script that Edgar (Wright) and Michael (Bacall) had written, which has so much Gideon in it, and just based on some of the things he was saying, it immediately eliminated a lot of possibilities of who this guy was. And I did talk to Bryan (O’Malley – the comic’s creator). I had some good phone conversations with him and he gave me a lot of really good advice about the character. Shall I tell you that? Or just hopefully it will come through. He said something to me which was nice. He said, "Hopefully I'll learn something about the character too from you guys." So it kind of worked. He's like, "I'm still trying to figure it out too, because I've got a little ways to go on him." So it's nice. My character actually is alive and is still being figured out.” Said Schwartzman.
When Cera was prompted to answer why he took on the role of Pilgrim because the character is different than what he’s used to and how he managed to bring the comic alive on screen he replied,
“I can't remember. We shot so much of this in the beginning of the year. I didn't try to go against the energy in the books. I mean, I think I tried to do that, but I really can't remember.” Said Cera
Since music plays such a huge part in the books and obviously the film, the interviewer had to bring up the songs and if anyone has considered playing them live in concert form.
Cera: I don't know. I really want to. I wanted to play the songs at some point.
Schwartzman: It would be incredible.
Cera: They're really fun to play. Yeah, that would be so cool. That would be fun.
Schwartzman: I would say that the stuff I've seen of the music looks so good. It looks so real. Sometimes music's not handled correctly, like they don't look like they're playing. It really looks like you guys are playing.
Cera: Good.
Since the book has a Canadian edge to it and Cera himself is Canadian, he was also asked what he thought about the story taking him back to his roots.
“I love that about the graphic novels, growing up in Toronto. It's going to be a really special movie for Toronto people, or Canadians in general, I guess. But yeah, I really liked the idea of working here.” Said Cera.
For the full interview and set report hit the link – Director Edgar Wright talks about other aspects of the film as well, including lot’s of stunt work and action scenes as well as the whole team having a sword fighting tournament behind the scenes. Where apparently Kieran Culkin who is very shy would be sword fighting Chris Evans and looking like the definition of terror. Sounds like everyone had a blast working on the film. Can’t wait for the results to hopefully shine this August.
