Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was described as an "experiment" by Disney CEO Bob Chapek, but the movie has proved to be so much more than that. As well as being one of Marvel Studios best-reviewed big screen offerings, it also continues to exceed box office expectations.
After earning $2.448 million on Monday and an additional $3.2 million on Tuesday, the Phase 4 title has managed to pass the $150 million mark at the North American box office.
It's only the fourth movie of 2021 to achieve that impressive feat (and trust us when we say it is impressive in this pandemic era of box office hauls). Now, it sits behind A Quiet Place Part II ($160 million), F9: The Fast Saga ($173 million), and Black Widow ($184 million). How close it will come to surpassing any of those obviously remains to be seen.
However, with pretty much zero competition until Venom: Let There Be Carnage arrives on October 1, there's still plenty of time for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to make more of an impact.
Chances are it will probably top A Quiet Place Part II and F9, but beating Black Widow could be too much of a challenge, even for the MCU's most badass hand-to-hand fighter. Still, this is a great result, and proof that moviegoers will head to theaters if it's for a movie they really want to watch.
