A new trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has arrived, and it's definitely a sneak peek that promises to get fans talking about the Marvel Studios movie.
A lot of the footage is devoted to exploring the relationship between Shang-Chi his father Wenwu (The Mandarin), and the place the Ten Rings have in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They're clearly incredibly powerful, and it seems the villain hoped to one day pass them down to his son.
The biggest reveal, however, is a glimpse of The Great Protector, a water dragon we've seen only in toy form up until now. That creature is expected to take the place of Fin Fang Foom, a character that's been left on the cutting room floor for obvious reasons (starting with the name).
Wait, did we say that was the biggest reveal?
Right at the end of this trailer, we learn that Shang-Chi will be competing in a fight tournament and that one of his opponents will be The Incredible Hulk's baddie: Tim Roth's Abomination! The villain has had something of a makeover and is now quite a bit closer to his comic book counterpart, so it seems this movie will set the stage for his return in She-Hulk.
Oh, and as if that's not a big enough deal, it appears that might be Wong (Benedict Wong) who is fighting him. It's hard to be 100% sure about that, though.
"Marvel Studios’ 'Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings' stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization," reads a brief synopsis shared by Marvel Studios a couple of months ago.
The movie also stars Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, as well as Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay by David Callahan, Destin Daniel Cretton, and Andrew Lanham the movie is set to be released theatrically on September 3rd, 2021.
