In Shazam! Fury of the Gods, we revisited the events of 2019's Shazam! in a flashback reminding us what Billy Batson did to The Wizard's staff.
However, some big changes were made to that scene. Rather than re-using footage from the last movie, director David F. Sandberg chose to reshoot and recreate that moment, replacing the 2019 costumes with the 2023 versions and swapping out Michelle Borth with Grace Caroline Currey.
Sandberg took to Twitter over the weekend to share both a comparison of the two scenes and explain what led to him deciding to shake things up.
"I don’t think the old suits were bad, I mean they were based on my specifications after all," he told one inquisitive fan. "But why not try something new rather than doing the same thing again? Like, the hood was cool but we weren’t going to use it so let’s try a design without it."
Ultimately, a change in costumes was the least of the Shazam! sequel's problems as it looks set to go down in history as the lowest-grossing DCEU movie of all time. Next up for Warner Bros. this year is The Flash, with Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom set to follow.
After that, the DCEU will become DC Studios' new DCU.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods continues the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word "SHAZAM!," is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam.
"Despite lacking so much of what made Shazam! great, there’s plenty of fun to be had with Shazam! Fury of the Gods, a movie that serves as a reminder the DCEU wasn’t all bad," we said in our review. "It’s just a shame it never quite manages to electrify us in the same way as its predecessor."
Shazam! Fury of the Gods arrived on Digital last Friday. The sequel will then hit 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on Tuesday, May 23.
