SHAZAM! Producer Peter Safran Explains Why He Thinks The Marvel/DC Rivalry Is "Kind Of Bullsh*t"

In a new interview, Aquaman and Shazam! producer Peter Safran has shed some light on why he believes the endless Marvel/DC rivalry between fans is totally unnecessary and completely counterproductive.

Producer Peter Safran is playing a key role in the new DC Extended Universe and his name has popped up a lot in regards to both Aquaman and Shazam!. Now, he's been talking about the latter and made it clear that he doesn't have an issue with James Gunn taking the helm of both The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

"I love that he's doing Guardians 3," he revealed during a recent interview. "Just as a fan, I love the Guardians movies so much. I cannot wait to see what he does with Guardians 3."

Wait a second, that doesn't really make sense, does it? After all, surely Warner Bros. can't be happy that Gunn will be working on movies set in both the Marvel and DC Universes! Well, Safran went on to explain why the Marvel/DC rivalry simply doesn't exist for them and added that he wishes fans could move past it as there's really no need for it to exist at this stage.

"I've always believed that which unites comic book fans is much greater than that which divides us," Safran added. "And so, the whole Marvel/DC rivalry thing is kind of bullshit. Because really, we're all fans of the same thing. I love the fact that [James Gunn has] directed a movie for Marvel and directed a movie for DC. And the Earth is not spinning off its axis. It's okay."

Shazam! has found itself embroiled in this rivalry due to the fact the hero used to be known as "Captain Marvel," a title which has since been adopted by Carol Danvers in the comic books and Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Don’t think it’s a rivalry both can make good movies. I really don’t think marvel cares that their directors have directed dc movies. They don’t go head to head with each other so it’s not competition.

He’s absolutely right. We have more things in common for what brings us together to this genre than what differentiates us.

Could the DC vs. Marvel rivalry, have perhaps contributed to Disney deciding to rehire James Gunn? If his Suicide Squad movie is a huge hit, and he were to become a superstar director/writer/producer exclusively for the DCEU, would Disney have felt some regret?

@WAKANDABATMANFOREVER - Supposedly there was always a deal behind closed doors to bring Gunn back in. They were just waiting for the dumb Tweet thing to blow over. PR move. He was always going to direct. At least that's what I've heard.

I guess sooner or later the same thing will happen to these CBMovies.
Basically having the same "creative team" handling Marvel/DC properties.
King writing Vision for Marvel on monday and Batman for DC on tuesday.
It's easier to do that with actors, that's for sure, but now...it's not like we have gazzilion directors, so...

I have never been to a comic con. Do DC and Marvel fans meet up and rumble in the parking lot? Or is this just a small group of internet warriors looking for entertainment?

Why is Shazam! located in Detroit and not Fawcett City?

@superbigguy32 - The movie takes place in Philadelphia.

@L0RDbuckethead - Oh okay, I knew it was something like that, thanks. But I wonder why they didn’t use Fawcett City?

@superbigguy32 - Yeah, same. It seems like an easy call for Sandberg to include it over Philly since we've already seen the likes of Gotham, Metropolis and Central City.

I wonder if it has to do with the name "Fawcett," like Fawcett Comics...? Maybe there's some old rights issue with the word.

@L0RDbuckethead - I never thought of that. But WB/DC has the rights to the character so they should have the rights to the city’s name?

People SHOULD just want quality products regardless of the company. Sad thing is that's not always the case.

We as CBM fans all win when either company or even another has a hit CBM.

Or even more precisely, a good or great CBM. I am not thrilled that Venom is propelling a Spider-Man absent Spider-Verse, but overall it helps the genre continue.

Large fanbases always become toxic and attract people who start BS rivalries that exists in their heads.

There's also more to comics and these characters then the movies.

Youtube is a horrid place for toxic 12yr olds who have clearly never read a comic or know anything about the characters besides what they see in the movies.
