Entertainment Weekly has shared a pair of new images from Sony/Marvel's highly-anticipated
Spider-Man: Far From Home, and while one features an amazing new look at Spidey's awesome red-and-black suit, the other should raise a number of questions as it sees an unmasked Peter Parker (Tom Holland) partner-up with Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal)?!
Speaking with EW, director Jon Watts reveals the web-slinger and the powerful magician will actually become fast friends in the film, after being introduced by none other than Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) himself. “
If Tony Stark was sort of the mentor in the previous films, we thought it would be interesting to play Mysterio as almost like the cool uncle.” The pair will be tasked with stopping the Elementals, a mysterious quartet of villains who can manipulate nature.
While the on-screen friendship of the comic book adversaries is undoubtedly surprising, what's not surprising is that their off-screen counterparts also became good friends over the course of filming. Tom Holland says, “
If you look at any interview I’ve ever done prior to this movie and someone asked me, ‘Who would you work with if you could work with any actor?’ I would’ve said Jake Gyllenhaal, and when I found out it was him, I was stoked, but also really nervous. But Jake absolutely was more than I ever could have expected.” Watts laughingly adds, “
Sometimes they would crack each other up, and we could not get through takes occasionally. It was a problem!”
While it's still unclear whether the film takes place before or after
Avengers: Endgame, Watts teases, “
Peter’s ready for a vacation at the beginning of this movie, to say the least. This film is about the world telling him, ‘It’s time for you to step up and grow up, kid,’ and he’s saying, ‘But I still want to be a kid and go on vacation.’” This would seemingly hint toward the sequel taking place after the events of
Endgame, but that's just speculation until either studio delivers confirmation. It's also something that'll likely be touched upon whenever the official theatrical trailer is released.
Additionally, Spidey will sport two new suits in the film: the red-and-black outfit (pictured below) and an all-black stealth costume, which will be given to him by Nick Fury in order to help him protect his secret identity from his friends. Watts jokes, “
It kind of looks like Black Widow — maybe it was one of her suits and they just tailored it.”

However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks, creating havoc across the continent!
