It's A Merry Christmas For The Wall-Crawler As SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Passes $1 Billion Worldwide!

We certainly hope you're all enjoying the holidays, but the folks at Sony Pictures are probably happier than everyone right now after Spider-Man: No Way Home swings past the $1 billion mark worldwide...

Spider-Man: No Way Home started rolling out in theaters on December 15, and the Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios movie has now hit the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office! We're waiting on specific numbers (reporting is a little behind due to Christmas), but as of yesterday, the threequel had earned $406 million domestic and $922 million globally. With an estimated $90 million - $95 million from North America alone today, Christmas is going to be kind to Spidey.

The Jon Watts-helmed threequel became the highest-grossing movie of 2021 earlier this week, beating the likes of F9: The Fast Saga and No Time to Die. What makes this $1 billion haul most impressive, however, is that Spider-Man: No Way Home hasn't been released in China (49 movies have earned more than $1 billion globally, but this is only one of five to do so without the Middle Kingdom). The fact that it's performing like a movie released prior to the pandemic is also staggering.

The response from fans and critics alike has been overwhelmingly positive, so it's really no wonder it's exceeded expectations and already started generating Oscar buzz. Given its box office achievements and audiences embracing it as a joyous piece of filmmaking celebrating twenty years of the wall-crawler's big screen adventures definitely makes it a worthy contender.

"Spider-Man: No Way Home is the greatest Marvel movie ever made. Period," we said in our review of the movie. "As epic as it is emotional, this is not only a perfect blockbuster, but Spider-Man’s wildest, funniest, and most awe-inspiring adventure yet. It's a Marvel masterpiece."

It should be be very interesting seeing where things go from here, though it does feel like the sky could be the limit for Spider-Man: No Way Home ($2 billion might be a tough task without China, but $1.5 billion is looking likely). We'll obviously keep you updated over the days and weeks to come.

Check out our interview with Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland if you missed it earlier this month, and Happy Holidays from all of the team here at ComicBookMovie.com!

Spidey always makes bank. I didn't love the movie but it was the best of the new trilogy by a mile and it's great how excited the GA is/was about it. When a movie does well like this we all win.

@TheManWithoutFear - same. I'm struggling trying not to be a party pooper, because I didn't love it either, but any comic book movie being successful is a win. The Grinch in me still wants to complain about the issues until people have a more reasonable reaction to the movie and stop hailing it as near perfection.

"The best MCU movie ever made. Period." Is so [frick]ing laughable a statement. I liken the delusional hype of this movie to Snyder levels of bullshit. Snyder films are entertaining but they aren't good. Same with the Homecoming trilogy. To call No Way Home "art" is [frick]ing laughable. It's a product, manufactured by a team, not a single artist vision who compiles a team he picks to hand craft this story. This is just another prepackaged, fast food quality film.

The difference between No Way Home and actual Best Picture winners is the difference between McDonald's and Gordon Ramsey.

I love comic book movies and they have their place. I also love skateboarding and 100% see it as a legitimate sport, doesn't mean I believe they should make Skateboarding an Olympic sport. And a skateboarder shouldn't be hard to the same athletic standards as a speed runner or gymnastics gold medalist. Apples and oranges. Both fruits, but different.

@ElricReturns - I just rewatched it this week and I have to agree. Wasn’t as good as I originally thought but still a sold movie overall.

with all due respect, this statement is complete horseshit & arbitrary gatekeeping. that it was able to elicit a (strong) reaction out of its audience alone makes it worthy of the distinction. i'm sure the many artists who put forward their craft & expertise into producing a unified vision would disagree also. that so many people were able to get on the same page to make something that's even good, let alone coherent, speaks to the effort that was poured into this.

all major motion pictures are created with the expectation of making profit, and are thus product. that doesn't make them lesser pieces of art and neither does them being created by one of the more money-grubbing corporations out there. that's the only way films of this magnitude are going to be made.

ElricReturns - 12/25/2021, 3:30 PM
@DTor91 - what is and isn't art is subjective. I have my opinions what constitutes art, you do too. Neither of us are right nor wrong. The only fact is that while everything can be considered art, not everything that us created is in fact art. I can see a feather fall on a baby's head and view it as art. Is it? Maybe. Some people would argue no its not. Who's to decide who's right or wrong? Does it even matter what most people's majority opinions are? If everyone in the entire world stands by and watches a hobo shit in his hand and says its art, that doesn't convince me a hobo shitting in his hand is art because most people's opinion is it is art. Feel free to appreciate your shitty hobo hand, I don't care. I mind why you compare shitty hobo hands to the Mona Lisa.

"Well we all enjoy hobo shitty hands, so it's art!"

Ok.... I'm gonna share my opinions, you can share yours lol

@DTor91 - for instance, why aren't we nominating Pornography in the best pictures category? If the only bases is "something filmed that makes you feel emotions", I dare you to name the last feature film that got you so emotional you busted a nut. So why aren't we including Porn in the Oscars? Porn is art, right?
MG0019
MG0019 - 12/25/2021, 3:42 PM
@ElricReturns - Dude, they do have Porn Oscars.

And by your own reasoning, the Academy doesn’t define art.

All in all man, you just sound pompous and self contradicting. Don’t mean to argue with you, but just joining the crowd trying to show you the mirror.
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 12/25/2021, 3:52 PM
@TheFireForce - I think it's enjoyable, definitely fun watching it the first time or watching with someone who doesn't know the surprises and is genuinely shocked by them. That stuff makes this movie really really fun. It's a fun movie, and reasonably solid. It had a beginning, middle and end and told a story I understood from start to finish. I gave it a 7/10 which isn't bad. It's probably top 4 best Spiderman Film. I have no problem giving credit where credit is due.

I'm not trying to destroy this movie. I simply want people to take off the MCU-biased Nostalgia-baity rose colored glasses and take a fair look at this movie. The majority of people on here take zero room for any criticism. You you don't only talk positively and hype this film, you get hassled by rude people. I give my opinions about a film, and they insult me personally and insult me, like petulant children whining after they are told differently.

I love getting replies which focus on the film and if our opinions differ I love engaging in conversations and reading why people feel different about the film. What I don't like is when people come on here and say things like "your opinions are horse shit".

🤷🏾‍♂️

People get really sensitive why you criticize things they love. Makes them feel stupid when you point out the lack of quality in something they initially believed to be high quality.

@ElricReturns - What is and isn’t art isn’t subjective. All movies are inherently art. It’s the quality of said art that’s subjective.
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 12/25/2021, 4:16 PM
@suitekid - There have literally been college courses and final dissertations and thesis statements and books upon books written for and against this discussion of "what constitutes art". It's an ongoing and endless debate which will never have a definitive answer, save for the one you most believe to be true. We certainly won't be hammering it out to a conclusion in an internet comment section. Despite your iron clad convictions, impressive as you believe them to be, they do nothing more than include your opinions into this conversation of collected opinions.

@ElricReturns - You can totally put the best comic book movies of all-time, up against some of the more forgettable Oscar award winning films.
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 12/25/2021, 4:53 PM
@99OPTIMISTPRIME - I 100%. I'd even argue some of the best comic book movies could compete with some of the best Oscar winners. I'm not saying a Comic Book Movie could or should never win an Oscar.

But we're talking No Way Home being hailed as a perfect film and generating Best Picture buzz...

And my opinion is it's not even close to the caliber film it needs to be to even be considered. That's just me sharing my opinions.

I respect anyone who disagrees and wants to debate our opinions. I draw the line at people coming after me personally for sharing my opinions. That will never be okay.

I said "To call No Way Home art is laughable". I'm stating an opinion of the movie, not of any single individuals opinion. My statement wasn't personalized or an attack on anyone. It's opinions on a film.

no, you said "[[frick]ing] laughable". let's not back down just because you're being challneged...

i never said it was a personalized attack nor did i take it as such. i disagreed with that part of your statement. that your opinion is horseshit is just my opinion.

you're saying a lot to say nothing. the crux of my point is this: i think it's incredibly arrogant to belittle the passion of the many artists who cooperated to create this "product" just because it's directed at a mass audience.
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 12/26/2021, 12:16 AM
@HeraldNumber7 - and yet again, why the [frick] are you focusing I me personally? We are talking about a film. I think you are full of shit and an asshole, but I had the respect to not make this a personal attack on you, because we are discussing a [frick]ing movie. You can feel my opinions are horse shit... but when you personalize your responses at the user, not the topic, you [frick]ed up kid.

I've never singled anyone out. I'm not insulting you personally because your opinions on a film hurt my feelings, because I'm not a bitch. I focus on the film. I don't need to know how my opinions effect your [frick]ing feelings.
