After helming three Spider-Man movies for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, director Jon Watts will next bring the Fantastic Four back to the big screen in a reboot that will introduce Marvel's First Family to the MCU. Nothing has been revealed about the movie beyond a logo, though there is one obvious team-up fans are hoping to see.
In the pages of Amazing Spider-Man #1 in 1963, the teenaged Peter Parker attempted to join the team before learning Mister Fantastic, Invisible Girl, Human Torch, and The Thing weren't looking to turn their quartet into a quintet. A relationship was formed that would last decades, though, with Spidey actually becoming part of the group on several occasions.
Last week, we spoke to Tom Holland about his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home and asked the actor whether he's interested in reuniting with Watts to recreate that iconic first meeting.
"I think, for me, as the guy that plays Spider-Man - so you could say that I know him the best - I think what’s important is that he needs to take a break," Holland says. "We need to allow the audiences to let him breathe and figure out tonally how we’re going to bring this character back, if we bring this character back. You know, I think him popping up for a cameo would defeat the purpose."
"While I’d love to be in that film [because] I love Jon and would be really excited to see what he does with the Fantastic Four," he continued, pondering his future as the hero, "I think what we need to do with Spider-Man is let it breathe and almost let the audience tell us what they want."
It has previously been reported that when Disney and Sony reached a new agreement, it was for Spider-Man: No Way Home and at least one more MCU cameo appearance. For now, it doesn't look like that will be Fantastic Four, though there's nothing to say Peter can't cross paths with Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben somewhere down the line.
Spider-Man: No Way Home will exclusively be released in cinemas from December 15th!
