In terms of comic book franchises on the big screen, we have the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DC Extended Universe (which is only a semi-official name), and Sony Pictures' Universe of Marvel Characters. "SPUMC" always seemed like something of a mouthful, and very much a corporate title as opposed to one fans could really get behind.
Well, during Sony Pictures' CinemaCon presentation last night, Screen Rant reveals that the studio have named their slate of Spider-Man-adjacent movies, "Sony's Spider-Man Universe."
With the wall-crawler's name up there in lights, you have to believe that he's about to start factoring into these spinoff movies. Remember, a big part of that renegotiated deal with Disney/Marvel Studios was to open the door to Spider-Man being part of the MCU and SPUMC SSU (SSMU?), and there have already been rumblings that the hero will factor into that Kraven the Hunter movie.
A meeting with Venom also has to be somewhere on the cards after Spider-Man: No Way Home and Venom: Let There Be Carnage are released. Despite the mixed feelings some fans have about that Tom Hardy-led franchise, there's no denying it would be amazing to see the two characters once again sharing the big screen together.
For now, we know that Morbius, Madame Web, and Silk are among the projects coming to this SSU franchise.
As for Spider-Man, it feels a lot like his next movie is going to open the door to some very exciting possibilities, which may include the versions of Peter Parker played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
