CBM's Sunday Showdown: Who's The Better Superhero - BATMAN Or SPIDER-MAN?

CBM's Sunday Showdown pits two heroes (or villains) against each other to let you, our loyal readers, decide which of them deserves to be crowned the better comic book character.

Batman first appeared in the pages of Detective Comics #27 in 1939, and to call him one of the most popular and prolific superheroes of all-time would be an understatement. The star of more iconic storylines than we have room to list here, Bruce Wayne is a character who has also made a major impact on film and television (played by some of the greatest actors of all-time).

Batman is a deeply complex person, but there's no denying that he's one of the bravest, most heroic characters in the DC Universe. Yes, he has a backup plan to take down his fellow members of the Justice League, but his inability to trust those around him aside, there's no one better to have on a team than the Caped Crusader. He also happens to be a legit badass and world-class detective!

Ben Affleck is set to return as Batman in The Flash, though the mantle is now Robert Pattinson's in The Batman, and it's clear the Dark Knight's future on the big screen is a bright one.

Since swinging into the Marvel Universe in 1962's Amazing Fantasy #15, Spider-Man has become a superhero who is synonymous with that world. Just like Batman, Peter Parker's rogues gallery is every bit as recognisable as he is, and the storylines focusing on the web-slinger are among the most iconic in comic book history (even less successful ones like "The Clone Saga").

Spidey has also faced countless tragedies and suffered tremendous losses, but he always comes out the other side a better hero. While some questionable creative decisions have been made over the years  (he should never have joined the Avengers) Spider-Man remains a character who is relatable, fun to spend time with, and complex in ways that other heroes simply are not.

Tom Holland currently plans the web-slinger on the big screen, and rumour has it that former Peter Parkers, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, will reprise their roles for 2021's Spider-Man 3.

There's no denying that both Batman and Spider-Man are two of the world's greatest superheroes, but we want you to decide which of them is better! You can do that by casting your vote in the poll below, while we'd love to also hear your thoughts in the comments section.

Be sure to check back here next week for the results and another instalment of CBM's Sunday Showdown. If you have any characters you think should be pitted against each other here, let us know!

I’ll take pointless polls for $100, Alex.

@JoshWilding - you're a hack. Make another "click next" article that doesnt involve any factual news reporting. You get zero respect from anyone. Clown.

That's like asking, "Who's your favorite child?"

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Ikr. That being said, Spidey is my A1 and Batman is my A2.

Any parent has an A1 and an A2, lol.

They’re nothing alike lol. My favourite DC and Marvel heroes though, and they populate my top 3 CBMs of all time (TDK, Spidey 2, Spider-Verse).
Weird comparison though.

I recently read a Batman comic where it basically showed if Batman would just do his Bruce Wayne thing and use that money to help Gotham it would be much more effective. The Batman persona just seems to perpetuate the psychopaths.
So I’ll go with Spider-Man.

@MutantEquality - Yeah, saw that one. It’s a naive take on what perpetuates crime and how to solve it. A more nuanced take would be Bruce using his money to help and have Batman clean up the really dangerous, unreformable criminals. So pretty much a normal Batman comic.

As to who would win: Batman, because he always has a plan.

@patgreyc - I mean, that’s what Batman does but they always get out. They always hurt him and his family and then he always defends the villains from his family. It’s weird. I mean if commissioner Gordon just deputized him, if a villain died, it would be legal. It’s just a weird cycle. Even his money was taken away lately which actually stops Bruce from doing any good as well.
Spider-Man doesn’t kill either but while I don’t read Spider-Man comics anymore, he doesn’t seem to have this twisted “I need my villains” thing going on. And doesn’t seem to have the “recruit children only to be murder and maimed but keep them getting back at the culprit.”
Anyway anyway. I’ll just say Spider-man.

@patgreyc - and...isn’t it weird that, even though always having a plan seems to be his super power, he has absolutely no Olán or idea how to permanently stop his villains or even how to imprison them without escape. He has no idea how to do it. It’s like his plan is just to expect them to kill all over again. Hell of a plan if you ask me

@MutantEquality - You’re not wrong. It is weird if you think about the fact he hopes to eventually redeem them even though they are obviously recidivists.

I believe it comes down to personal preference since they are two amazing characters and the only thing they really have in common is both wear a mask and are heroes.

Spider-Man has always been my favorite superhero. He’s the character that got me into reading comics. I like how he is an Everyman who is forced to deal with real problems we all face and they are complicated by his double life. It makes him easily the most relatable. He also has some of the most unique powers and fighting style of any superhero, so much so that no real doppelgänger has ever been successful from other prints. Spider-Man works because he can easily tackle relevant personal issues of the times.

Gotham Batman or Justice League Batman?

One is a little more human, just a little, but he’s still OP.

JL Batman though is way way too OP! So over powered that he can take hits and blows from Superman and even Darkseid, it’s ridiculous!

He’s still too OP either way.

@Jordanstine - I vote Spider-man by the way. I prefer more human characters (ironically for Batman).

Last time I took a poll like this it was Han Solo Vs. Jabba the Hutt.

Han Solo won, of course.

But Jabba the Hutt demanded a recount.

The two most popular heroes in all of comics, people will pick their favourite character.

It won't be decided on their heroic acts or sacrifices.

Its like the polls of who would win...

Batman Vs Galactus

You guessed right, Batman won.

What are we ranking them on though? How good their stories are? Or how compelling their characters are? Or how good morally they are? You can compare them in so many different ways that it's pretty much impossible to say one is "better" than the other.
