EDITORIAL: How Spider-Man Can Fit Into the MCU Part 2

My last article dealt with what I thought the first film should be as well as where it should fit into the schedule. Given this, I have decided to go ahead and give my opinion on what a second film should entail, following the events of Avengers: Infinity War Part 2.

First of all, you guys will probably want to read my first article to understand what kind of story led up to this second movie: http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/Darman/news/?a=113656. Read that, if interested, and come back here. I'll essentially be picking up right where I left off. However, before we get to the story aspect, we have to deal with, again, scheduling the follow-up film. And, I'm about to provide an interesting idea as to how to ALSO do the third film in the franchise.

Following Avengers: Infinity War Part II, Marvel hasn't set so much as a release date afterwards. However, I think it is safe to assume that the heroes that made up the first three phases will be taking a break from the silver screen for a little while, letting these new heroes, introduced in Phase 3, shine. Given what we know about the supposed Marvel and Sony deal, which, ultimately, is very little, a Spider-Man film would be on the way right after this last Avengers film. I would probably place it on the very viable release date of July 3, 2019 as it has proven successful for the property to be placed on the 4th of July weekend. Now, I would think that this new franchise's Spider-Man should shoot the second and third film back-to-back. The story reason will make sense later but this allows Spider-Man to follow along with the new trilogy of Avengers flicks perfectly should they decide to shoot back-to-back again (which I think another two films later in the franchise should do but we'll get to that when I do). This will put the franchise's third installment on track to open July 3rd, 2020. Now, I'll get into the story of just the second film in the franchise, leaving the third film for release later.

It has now been a year and a half since the first Spider-Man flick (in continuity). The Avengers, following the last film, have disassembled for the final time and Peter Parker finds himself trying to readjust to normal life, both as Peter and Spider-Man. Peter Parker, as will have been revealed in Avengers: Infinity War Part 2, will have started a relationship with Mary Jane. In the film, Peter and Gwen have grown used to this arrangement although it is clear that Gwen was initially a lot more hurt than she is now. At the beginning of the film, Peter goes through a lot of the PTSD things that Tony went through in Iron Man 3 and the only person he can turn to, as he told Gwen at the end of the first movie who he was, is Gwen. The first conversation they have in the film is after Peter fights the Shocker, used much like he was in the Ultimate Comics. However, the encounter with Shocker did give Peter some flashbacks to Thanos and his fight with him. The conversation between Peter and Gwen becomes heated after a while when he brings up Mary Jane. They fight and Peter leaves the house.

We, then, cut to Justin Hammer, played by Sam Rockwell, getting out of prison. Since his arrival in prison, Stark Industries is no longer in direct competition with him but OsCorp has since stepped up to fill that gap. Their significant leaps to making a super soldier serum (the Oz, that was injected into the spider that gave Peter his powers) has forced Hammer Industries to go with some pretty drastic attempts to create a super soldier. His first experiment in this had gone alright, creating the Sandman, who was given to Kingpin for continued funding. The second one, though, was an electrician named Max Dillon who was about to die from being electrocuted before Hammer took him and performed the life saving procedure to endow him with the powers of electricity. However, Dillon hasn't learned to control the power and he has to stay secluded. Hammer, remarking about the failure of his own experiments, gets a specialist in breaking-and-entering to help steal OsCorp's secrets. This specialist, Quentin Beck, was known for his special effects expertise before using that for multiple bank robberies in the midwest. This led to the police dubbing him Mysterio. Beck promises to do his best and acquire the information.

We, then, cut to Norman Osborn, played by Jpn Hamm. Norman Osborn has been excelling at the Oz research ever since being forced to cut ties with S.H.I.E.L.D., following its destruction. Having had it be privatized research gave way to new scientific discoveries, such as the spiders. However, the private investors have grown impacient as Hammer has made his advancements more public and they seem to have been going better (with human trials already in the works). Threatening to pull his funding, Norman decides that human trials need to start then. Dr. Otto Octavius warns against what that could do as it hasn't been tested. Norman brings Otto into another room and provides the shot of Peter getting bitten by the spider, stating that it already has worked.

We cut back to Peter, sitting in class, on his final day of his senior year. Gwen catches up with him after class, stating that she was sorry about the other day. Peter and Gwen make their peace quickly before Mary Jane comes up and kisses Peter on the cheek. Mary Jane pulls Peter away from Gwen to go out on the town for the evening. Peter agrees, leaving Gwen in the dust as she mumbles, "good-bye." Next, Quentin Beck has efficiently broken into OsCorp, having set off a device that simulates an explosion across the street. Beck, then, heads for the archives where he is confronted by secruity. Beck and secruity have a brief exchange before Beck is forced to knock out the secruity agent and run away from the archives. Beck stumbles upon a different segment of OsCorp that contains the Mysterio suit. He looks it over and realizes that it has the same capabilities as the Iron Man suit. Beck decides to leave it but the alarm goes off as he scrapes past a piece of glass. Locked in the room, with secruity arriving soon, Beck puts on the suit and prepares for battle.

Peter and Mary Jane are sitting in a cafe near Times Square when the explosion sounds near OsCorp. Peter quickly takes off, using the Bugle as an excuse. Spider-Man shows up on the side of the building where the explosion had occured. Mysterio ends up flying behind him. Peter's spider sense goes off as the repulsor charge shoots a green blast into the building where he was just seconds before. A fight ensues but Mysterio uses his devices to create an illusion of a giant snake. The giant snake illusion gives Peter flashbacks to the images he witnessed when fighting Thanos, visions of his own death. Peter tries to shake it off but Mysterio uses it to his advantage and blasts him off the roof. When Mysterio goes in for the kill, Peter has disappeared. With the police approaching, Mysterio books it out as well.

When Peter brings the pictures to J. Jonah Jameson, he paints the picture of how Spider-Man was defeated by a "sorcerer". Peter points out that Mysterio was using what looked like repulsors but Jameson shrugs it off by stating that he created serpents out of thin air. Peter can't really argue with that but he heads home. Mysterio arrives back at Hammer Industries where Justin Hammer becomes furious with him, telling him that not only did he fail his mandate but that he also made a public spectacle out of it. Mysterio responds by laying waste to the building, saying that he is no longer under the control of anyone. With the combined power of the suit and his special effects, Mysterio will present a threat that the city has never seen before. Electro manages to get away in the confusion by sucking himself into a power outlet. Mysterio, then, retires to his to his own personal labratory in the Bronx.

When Norman Osborn announces on television that he has come up with the new super soldier serum in Oz and that, to demonstrate his confidence in it, he will be testing it himself, Mysterio decides to plan his next attack on Osborn to demonstrate his newfound ability to strike fear into the hearts of New Yorkers. Osborn, when the cameras shut off, tells Otto that, despite the research not being completed, that they need to act now, while Hammer is under pressure from the media and the police about Mysterio's attack. Mysterio does, indeed, show up when the experiment is ready to be run. However, even before Mysterio shows up Osborn begins reacting oddly to the Oz. But, before Otto Octavius can get to him, or his four arms can, Mysterio blasts him with both his repulsors directly in the harness. Otto Octavius is knocked out cold, smoking from where the repulsors blasted him. Mysterio, then, turns on a vulnerable Osborn. Harry, who is present at the time, jumps in front of his father. Spider-Man only sees Harry and tackles Harry to the ground allowing the repulsor blast to hit Norman. The explosion is massive and Spider-Man is blown against the wall. When the smoke clears, Norman is nowhere to be found. (The smoke takes at least 20 seconds to dissipate.) Harry begins, furiously, trying to find a way to attack Mysterio. Peter, himself, is furious and goes after Mysterio. The fight leads into the middle of Times Square. Mysterio begins targetting civilians and, as Peter tries to save them, he is "hit" by a blade. However, Peter remains non-injured. Peter realizes that Mysterio is using illusions. With this knowledge, Spider-Man gains the upper hand and defeats Mysterio. The police show up and arrest Beck but not Spider-Man, as he has gone.

Peter and Harry both attend Norman's funeral, which occurs the day before their graduation. Mary Jane comforts Harry and Peter understands, given him ditching her and a fight between them having occured between the Mysterio labratory scene and the announcement of the news for Norman, that their relationship is over. Peter describes to Gwen that it was all his fault that Norman died. Gwen comforts him. However, the next scene shows Green Goblin lurking around in Manhattan where he finds a purple cloak. He starts muttering to himself, "PPPPAAARRRRKERRRR." We, then, finally cut to the graduation scene and, right as Peter is about to take his diploma, Green Goblin crashes down in the field. People begin to scatter as Gwen tells him to go. Peter responds, telling her to go. When Spider-Man shows up, Green Goblin lunges at him yelling "PPPPAARRRRKERRR!" Spider-Man is stunned that the beast knows his name. The helicopters incoming drowned it out enough so most people probably didn't hear but Spider-Man is quickly overcome by Green Goblin. Spider-Man is knocked unconscious and is about to be killed when Captain Stacy shoots at Goblin and Goblin turns on him, beating him to the brink of death. Gwen throws something at him and Goblin turns on her and Gwen begins to run away as the choppers close in on Green Goblin. The choppers manage to shoot at Green Goblin, forcing him into the river where the choppers begin to circle but Gwen returns to her father's side.

This version of Captain Stacy, first introduced in the first film, likes Peter and thinks him to be the best friend that Gwen could ever hope to have. As Captain Stacy lay dying, Gwen goes up to him and Stacy tells her that he is dying. Gwen begins to sob, telling him that he can't go. He tells her that she still has Peter and that Peter loves her. Gwen looks over at him and then Stacy pulls her closer to him. He tells her to look out for herself but to also make sure that he looks out for her. With one final movement, he points at Spider-Man, signifying what has been hinted at during the two films: that George Stacy knows who Spider-Man is. George Stacy dies there, on Gwen's graduation day. Sirens compound and Spider-Man is woken up. He looks at Gwen and then at George and is about to come over when Gwen just yells at him to go. Spider-Man hesitates but she reiterates to go and he obliges this time. The sirens come in as the screen fades to black.

The next scene is Gwen opening the door to Peter. Peter apologizes about her father but Gwen says that it wasn't his fault. Peter looks down and mutters how it was. Gwen begins to cry and runs up to hug him. They both cry in each other's arms as the scene begins to fade into the credits and it ends with the overlooking of the city. The after-credits scene shows Hammer going over to one of his aids describing the mess with the press. His aid says that he tried to contact the corporate mole over at OsCorp to pull out but he couldn't get ahold of him. Hammer asks why he wasn't able to get ahold of Otto. Then, we see the headline come up that world-renowned scientist, Otto Octavius, has been taken into hospital custody of the FBI. The scene ends with a look at the reflection of Hammer's glasses.

The thirst for this dude to be Spider-Man is just astounding.

@PAF Honestly, I could go for someone different but I just think, out of the actors I know, he is the best fit. I'd be more upset, though, if they didn't capitalize on AnnaSophia Robb to play Gwen.

@TheDarman

I just find it odd everyone's fan casting him. That's just me tho. But who knows, no one ever thought Andrew would be Spidey and look.

Yea being a fan of the rami series I gotta say I'm not really feeling this direction,1st and for most there should be no more Gwen Stacy, and Peter parker as an adult wouldn't hurt neither.A completely different take on n the character we haven't seen on screen before. If Tobey and J K were to return and incorporate rami spidey in the mcu then that would be awesome

Tobey as Peter would not even be epic. He was a bad and overhyped parker. Nothing that screamed Peter at sll. He was inept the entire time. Peter is not really indpt
